How to Open Apps in Mul­ti­ple Win­dow on Any Android Smartphone

Google made a surprise release of Android N developer preview way before Google I/O. You might have checked out the features Android N preview offered. One of the most interesting features is to multitask with split-screen window. Two apps get divided into two windows and you can interact with both of them and also select and share data across these windows. Samsung brought it in with its Note series of smartphone. And, Google has finally delivered it in its stock Android OS.

So, I’ll show you today something similar to split-screen window feature. You can actually open multiple windows and multitask with your current Android phone. So, let’s see how you can do it.

Opening Apps in Multiple Windows

Android N lets you open two apps in split-view. Meaning in two unique windows. But, the app that I’m going to show you today can let you open apps in multiple views (Windows). The app is called Multitasking.

It basically gives you a sidebar where all the apps you can open are listed. And you can then open whichever app you want no matter on which screen you are on. As shown in the above image.

One thing to note here is that it doesn’t open the apps that are installed on your device. The apps you get are inbuilt apps of Multitasking. So, it won’t actually experience your installed apps in multiple windows.

Want to get the Split-Window feature of Android N on your Smartphone? In order to get it, your phone must be rooted with Xposed Framework installed. There’s a Xposed Module called XMultiWindow that can let you open apps in split-view.

You don’t need Root access for the app we are going to explore today. So let’s see how to use and configure it.

Exploring the App

After you install the app it might ask you to agree with you being OK with the app to display ads and ask you for completing surveys. You can deny it by clicking on the cancel on the top-right corner.

Multi-Window

To turn on this functionality tap the play button on the top-right corner of the app. You’ll get a notification that Multitasking has been turned on. Now, swipe from the left of the screen and a sidebar will slide out. Here, you have all the apps that you can access.

Now, open few apps and try them out. You can open as many apps you want.

Now, tap on the three dots in the title bar of the window. You’ll get different settings for that particular window and for that particular app too. You can minimize it and resize the window using the pinch gesture.

Some apps are only available in the Pro version.

Customization

You get good control over the app with its customization capabilities. Before you do anything else, turn off the unnecessary Caller ID feature. It just makes no sense using it. Also, it doesn’t work well.

Going into the app settings, you can choose to start with phone boot or not. You can set the work area limitation to screen size. Meaning the windows won’t disappear in the edge of the screen. Also, you can hide the notifications.

Then you get control over animations. Including the window and sidebar animation. You can set the width and height of the sidebar and also the default window size of the window.

Did You Like it?

Personally, I did like it. I can access some common tools like calculator, currency converter and TextPad from whatever screen I’m on. Yes, you can’t access installed apps from it. But, programmatically if you want installed apps in multiple windows then you need to have root access. Because the installed apps are tightly coupled with the OS.

Here’s how to install Windows on Android tablets

While there are some Windows 10 tablets you can buy, there are even more Android-based tablets that are available, and many of them even come with keyboards that let people work on them like they would on a Windows desktop or tablet. But what if you wanted to install Windows on your Android tablet? If you want to risk voiding your tablet’s warranty, there is a program called Change My Software that promises to install Windows on Android devices.

Keep in mind that this application is unsupported third-party software, and is not authorized by either Google or Microsoft. Also, your tablet may not have the hardware specs needed to run Windows, even with Change My Software. In other words, you will be downloading and using this program at your own risk.

With that out of the way, here’s how to install Windows on Android tablets with Change My Software.

Note: Since you aren’t actually buying a copy of Windows for this transfer, at best this is a gray area experiment. In other words, proceed with caution.

Download and install Change My Software

First, you first must install the Change My Software application on your Windows-based PC. There are several versions of the app, each for a different version of the OS (Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10). You can download all of the versions in one ZIP file at the link below.

Steps to install Windows on Android

After you install Change My Software on your PC, here are the steps you will need to install Windows on your Android tablet with this tool.

1. Make sure your Windows PC has a high-speed internet connection.
2. Connect your Android tablet to your Windows PC, via a USB cable
3. Open the version of the Change My Software tool you want to use.
4. Select the Android option in Change My Software, followed by your desired language
5. The Change My Software app should then start downloading the required drivers from your Windows PC to your Android tablet.
6. Once that’s done, click “Install” to begin the process. Obviously, you should keep your tablet connected to your Windows PC for the entire time. If you want to dual boot between Windows and Android on your tablet when the process is finished, you should not check the “Remove Android” box in the Change My Software app.
7. Once Windows has been installed on your Android device, it should either boot directly to the Windows OS, or to the “Choose an operating system” screen if you decided to make the tablet into a dual boot device. After that, your version of Windows should then begin its own normal setup process.

While Change My Software is supposed to work, we have to emphasize once again that installing Windows on Android tablets will void their warranties, and that the software itself is unsupported and not approved by Google or Microsoft.

Android How to: Use Dual Window on the LG G4

One of the features that users have wanted from Google for a long time is multi-window. Samsung has done it for while dating back to the Galaxy Note 2 if not earlier. LG, has also adopted their own version of multi-window called Dual Window. It was available on the LG G2, G3 and now the G4. It’s a bit better managed on the LG G4 this time around, but it could still use some work. For starters, not all apps that are installed are compatible. That is always an issue with these multi-window features, unfortunately.

LG’s Dual-Window feature is pretty simple to get too. Just press the “Recents” key and you’ll see at the bottom “Clear All” and “Dual Window”. Just tap on Dual Window and you’ll then be able to choose which app you want on the top and which you want on the bottom. As we mentioned, only a handful of apps are supported. That includes LG’s stock Messaging, Email, Gallery, File Manager apps as well as Chrome, YouTube, Maps, Hangouts, Drive, Docs, Sheets and Slides. So basically just a select few of LG’s apps and Google’s. You can tap either above or below to change where you want the app to appear. If you want to reopen your last Dual Window session, that will appear at the top of the first row. Just tap on the “Recent” there and you’ll open up your last Dual Window. Pretty easy.

Dual Window isn’t perfect, and probably never will be. For instance, when having YouTube and Gallery open, I did notice that there was quite a bit of lag throughout the OS afterwards. Obviously YouTube uses a bit of power and even data, so that could be why. But it could definitely use some work. Having said that, it’s great for watching the Android Headlines Podcast and typing up a doc in Google Docs or Drive. Or just messaging your friends on Hangouts. It’s a shame that LG and Samsung haven’t found a way to get their iterations of multi-window and dual-window to work with all apps that are in the Play Store.

Using Dual Window on the LG G4

Sometimes you want to take notes while you watch a video, but you only have one device with you. Sometimes, you need to reference the numbers from your spreadsheet while you draft and email. Or maybe you just wanna watch the Android Central Podcast while you sort out your email in a vain attempt at achieving Inbox Zero.

Whatever you needs may be, Dual Window on the LG G4 is here to help, and while there may not be a lot of apps supported right now, the ones that are will help you get things done.

Dual Window will allow you to split two apps between the top and bottom of the phone — or between left and right in some apps in landscape — and use both at almost the same time. We’ve seen this type of multitasking before on LG G3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note line, as well as the new Galaxy S6.

So it’s a welcome addition from LG, and a wonderful option. But, unfortunately, it’s only open to 13 apps at the moment. They are:

So how do you actually use Dual Window? It’s not exactly the smoothest experience, but the process is simple enough.

If you put the Dual Window icon in your nav bar when you edited your on-screen buttons, then you can simply tap that icon and proceed to the next step. If not, you can access Dual Window in the recent apps screen, which is accessed through the square icon on your nav bar.

A window will appear in the middle of the screen with an arrow animating up to the top half of the screen. You can either drag apps to the bottom or top, or you can tap one app to load on top, then tap a second app to load on bottom. Once both apps are loaded, you’ll notice a blue border that will appear on whichever app you interacted with last. This box allows you to re-size the apps, so you can shrink the YouTube window to just the video while you browse articles in Google Chrome.

Your keyboard will come up over the bottom app whether that’s the app you’re currently in or not, so place your apps accordingly — or use a bluetooth keyboard to keep it from popping up at all. As mentioned earlier, while this mode does work in landscape, certain apps and screens are designed for portrait and will kick Dual Window into that mode should you come across them while using it. The main screen in Hangouts did this half a dozen times during my use before I finally just stayed in portrait.

To exit Dual Window, you can tap the home button and return to the home screen. If you accidentally hit the home button and wish to return to Dual Window, your most recent Dual Window combination will be listed first in the app list. Tap the recent combination and the two apps will load in their respective windows.
