How to Connect Your Android Device to Wi-Fi

Use Wi-Fi on your Android to stream videos, browse the web, and more

This article explains how to connect your Android device to a Wi-Fi network. Instructions apply to devices from any manufacturer with Android 10, 9.0 Pie, or 8.0 Oreo, but the process for other Android versions is similar.

Turn On Wi-Fi On Android 9.0 and Up

Here’s how to make sure that Wi-Fi is turned on:

Open the Settings app.

Tap Network & Internet.

In the Network & Internet section, select Wi-Fi.

Turn on the Wi-Fi toggle switch.

Close the Settings app.

Alternatively, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Wi-Fi icon if it’s greyed out. To open the Wi-Fi settings, tap and hold the Wi-Fi icon.

Turn on Wi-Fi on Android 8.0

The process for enabling Wi-Fi and adjusting settings is different for Android 8.0. Here’s how to open the Wi-Fi settings on these devices:

Open Settings.

Tap Connections or Wireless & Networks.

Tap Wi-Fi to open the Wi-Fi settings.

Under Wi-Fi settings, turn on the Wi-Fi toggle switch.

Connect to a Wi-Fi Network

Once Wi-Fi is enabled, go to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi to see a list of nearby networks to which you can connect.

What to Consider Before Connecting

A network with a lock icon is secured and requires a password; it’s preferable to an unsecured one because it’s less vulnerable to intruders. If you must connect to an unsecured Wi-Fi network, use a firewall or antivirus app. Consider using a VPN, as well.

Don’t use an unsecured network for private browsing activities, such as accessing a bank account and logging in to your online user accounts.

Choose the strongest network available. The estimated signal strength displays next to each Wi-Fi network. The darker the icon or the more bars that display, the stronger the network signal is.

View Details About the Wi-Fi Connection

After your Android is connected to Wi-Fi, you can view details about the connection by tapping the network name and then tapping Advanced.

This interface varies slightly with Android version.

Get Notified About Open Wi-Fi Networks

You can set up your Android to automatically tell you when a network is available, as long as Wi-Fi is turned on (even if not connected). Here’s how:

Tap Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi.

Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner and then tap Advanced.

Turn on the Open network notification or Wi-Fi notifications toggle switch.

Choosing the Right Network

If you’re connecting to your home Wi-Fi network, you can find the default SSID and password on the bottom of your router or in the documents your ISP provided at signup. To connect to a network that isn’t yours, ask the owner for the name and Wi-Fi password.

Wi-Fi calling is a service offered by the major U.S. mobile service providers that allows you to use a Wi-Fi network instead of your mobile phone plan to make and receive calls. It’s a handy feature when you can’t get mobile phone reception or have limited minutes on your phone plan.

What Is Wi-Fi Calling?

Wi-Fi calling is an HD (High Definition) Voice service offered by mobile service providers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and others. Together with your HD Voice compatible Android smartphone, Wi-Fi calling allows you to place calls over a Wi-Fi network instead of your phone plan. With Wi-Fi calling enabled, you can make calls directly from your phone’s dial pad. No special software or apps are required.

Having an Android smartphone doesn’t guarantee you’ll be able to use Wi-Fi calling. It depends on your carrier’s services and the type and model of smartphone you have. Some new, but lower end, Android phones may not support Wi-Fi calling.

How Does Wi-Fi Calling Work?

Wi-Fi calling relies on HD Voice technology, which delivers calls over the fourth generation of wireless networks (more commonly known as 4G LTE). 4G LTE offers better quality and faster speeds than older technologies, such as 3G. This results in clearer, more natural-sounding calls.

How to Check If Your Android Smartphone Supports WI-Fi Calling

Want to know if your Android is Wi-Fi calling compatible? Finding out if your existing smartphone will support Wi-Fi calling is not always a straightforward matter. To activate Wi-Fi calling on most Android phones:

In your phone’s settings, turn on Wi-Fi and connect to a Wi-Fi network (skip this step if your phone is already connected to Wi-Fi).

Go to into your phone’s Settings menu.

Under Wireless and Networks, select More.

Tap Wi-Fi Calling on.

Once these steps have been performed successfully, Wi-Fi calling should be turned on. You can turn it off by going back into the same settings and toggling the Wi-Fi Calling option off.

How Will I Know If Wi-Fi Calling Is On?

When Wi-Fi calling is activated, you should see a Wi-Fi phone icon in the status bar. You can also pull down the notification screen, where you will find a message stating that calls will be made over Wi-Fi.

What Are the Benefits of Using Wi-Fi Calling?

The main benefit of Wi-Fi calling is that you can use any Wi-Fi connection to make calls. Unlike your mobile phone service, Wi-Fi calling is not tied to any specific carrier or network. Wi-Fi calling only works with HD Voice compatible devices. Many older models (and some new models) of Android smartphones don’t support Wi-Fi calling.

Not all carriers offer Wi-Fi calling. For example, pre-paid services that rely on other networks may not offer it. Be sure to check with the specific provider.

Если вы, как и я, считаете себя полноправным «хозяином» своего смартфона, то полный контроль над операционной системой и компонентами телефона для вас является как нечто само собой разумеющееся. Представьте же мое удивление, когда я узнал, что на некоторых смартфонах после обновления до восьмой версии Android’а опции дополнительных настроек Wi-Fi соединения попросту стали не доступны*

Разработчики оболочек их попросту «скрывают», хотя инициатором выступила сама Google. Те самые, которые на протяжении всей жизни ОС, начиная еще со второго поколения Андроид никому не мешали.

Мда. Эт че? Мы начинаем идти по старому пути Apple 🤷‍♂️

Не круто! и для тех, кто в танке. Хочу пояснить, что испокон веков нам был доступен следующий выбор:

• отключить Wi-Fi в «спящем» режиме (экран смартфона выключен);
• не выключать Wi-Fi при наличии источника питания, даже с выключенным экраном;
• никогда не выключать Wi-Fi, невзирая на наличие источника питания или его отсутствие (а также выключенный экран =)

Некоторые разработчики не чурались улучшать задумку Google по ускорению сети и оптимизации расхода аккумулятора в фоне и добавляли ряд дополнительных опций (которые, к слову, были доступны в качестве особенностей или «эксклюзивов» тех или иных оболочек, типа MIUI, EMUI, Asus Zen, Samsung и т.д.):

1. включать в том случае, если мобильны интернет пропал, либо качество приема сигнала значительно ухудшилось;
2. включать в случае фоновых загрузок, превышающих N-ное количество мегабайт;

и. были еще очень интересные «разработки» и улучшения функций интернет-соединения как, например, раздельная загрузка файла в несколько потоков через мобильный и Wi-Fi интернет одновременно (грубо говоря часть файла качалась через LTE-соединение, а остатки по домашнему вай-фай =)

Теперь о реалиях, что нужно делать, чтобы вернуть себе свои же «права»?!
