3 Ways to Find Out Android App Package Name or Android App ID

The names of Android apps and APK packages differ a lot. There are times when we need to know the package name of an app or APK. In this tutorial, we’ll see how to find out Android app package name or Android app ID using 3 different app package name checker methods.

Android is based on the Linux kernel. Hence, like every other Linux operating system, android apps are installed as packages. While this doesn’t concern most users, sometimes you will want to find out the APK package name of an installed app. You’ll need the name if you’re trying to uninstall an app using ADB, for instance. An Android Package Kit, or APK, is named according to the Java naming convention since most of the OS uses the said programming language. These app package names are always written in lower case letters to avoid name conflicts with java classes.

Generally, the package name of an app is in the format domain.company.application. Therefore, a package name generally begins with the top-level domain name of the organization and then the organization’s domain and then any subdomains, listed in reverse order. The organization can then choose a specific name for its package. Subsequent components of the package name vary according to an organization’s own internal naming conventions. We’ve described the naming convention for Android APK files in detail earlier.

Find Out Android App Package Name Using ADB

There are a few ways to find out the APK package name for Android apps and one of them is to use ADB. You can run a simple ADB shell command which will list out package names for all the installed apps on the currently connected Android device. This method works for any device that uses Android regardless of the manufacturer of the device. It even works for Amazon Fire TV since that is based on Android as well. You’ll, of course, need ADB and Fastboot installed on your PC and USB Debugging enabled on your Android device for this to work. If you don’t already have ADB and Fastboot setup, we’ve got guides to help you install it on your PC whether you use Windows, Mac, or Linux.

With everything ready, connect your Android device to your PC with a USB cable. Run the following command to make sure your device is properly connected.

If this is your first time using ADB from the computer, you will be asked to authorize ADB debugging permission to the computer on your phone, make sure you grant them.

Now push the command given below to see a list of package names for all the user installed apps on your Android device. Find Out Android App Package Name via ADB

The command above will list not only the package names of all the user installed apps but also their locations. For instance, package:/data/app/com.amazon.kindle-ElBS8ZadLGE9DPKNJlwA1g==/base.apk=com.amazon.kindle is the location and package name for Amazon Kindle. Find Out Android App Package Name Using an App

In most cases, the package name is descriptive enough for you to be able to figure out which app it is for. But it is still a chore to go through the list, which can be pretty long if you have a lot of apps. But hey, there’s an app for that… multiple apps, actually. It’s much easier to use apps because they’re meant to be pretty user-friendly, unlike the command line.

App inspector

App Inspector is an app we’ve previously suggested a couple of times if you’re looking to find the package name for an installed app. The app is pretty easy to use and lists all the apps, including system and user-installed apps. The apps are in alphabetical order or ordered by install time. This makes looking for a specific app quite easier in comparison to a list of package names in a command window.

Package Viewer 2.0 is even better since it lets you search for specific apps. You don’t have to tap on an app to see its package name. The package name for each app is displayed right under its name. It also lets you copy multiple package names at once.

Find Out Android App Package Name Using Play Store URL

The Google Play Store uses an app’s package name in the URL to that app’s Play Store page. You can find it right after id=. You can only see the URL when you’re browsing the Play Store using a browser. If you’re using the Google Play Store app on your Android device, you can still tap on the three-dot menu with the app’s page open and choose Share> Copy to clipboard. You can then paste the copied link somewhere to see the app package name.

Find package name or application ID of an Android app

Android apps use package name as their unique identification. In some references, it may also be called Application ID. Although there are some differences between the two, for most of us non-developers, it is the same. It usually consists of 3 parts, but it can have 2 parts as well. For example, the package ID of Mozilla’s Firefox Browser for Android is org.mozilla.firefox.

As mentioned, the package name is unique to an application. Play Store and Android smartphones identify apps using the package name. Two different apps can have the same name, however, their package name or application ID will always be different. If you have a need of the package name of a particular app, then follow any of the methods listed below.

Finding the Package Name of Android Apps

There are several ways to find out the package name of an Android app. I am listing down the various methods. You can follow any of them as per your convenience.

Method 1 – From the Play Store

As I mentioned, the Play Store also uses the Android app package name to list unique apps. So, the easiest way to find the app package name is via the Play Store.

On a PC/Mac:

1. Open play.google.com in your web browser.
2. Use the search bar to look for the app for which you need the package name.
3. Open the app page and look at the URL. The package name forms the end part of the URL i.e. after the id=?. Copy it and use it as needed.
   Note: Ignore any other information in the URL. It is not a part of the package name.

Do note that it is only applicable to apps which are listed on Play Store. For 3rd party apps, follow one of the alternative methods as listed below.

On Android mobile device

Most Android mobile browsers will redirect you to the Play Store app when you access the website. So, how do you find the package name from Play Store Android app? Here are the steps you can follow:

1. Scroll down to the end of the page till you see the (share) button.
2. Use it and share the Play Store app link to any service from where you can select and copy text. I usually use messaging without sending it to any recipient.
3. The app package name will at the end of the app link which you just shared. Copy it off and use it as needed.

Method 2 – Use an app on your phone

Trying to find the package name of an app installed on your device? Or the app is installed from a 3rd party source, then you can rely on the Package Viewer apps available on Play Store. We are using a well-known app called Package name viewer 2.0 for this tutorial.

1. Install Package Name Viewer 2.0 from the Play Store.
2. Scroll through the app list to find the app for which you need the package name. You can also use the search button to quickly look for a particular application or game.
3. The package name is listed just under the name of app. Just tap on the app name to get more options like copy.

This is a very simple tip to find the package name of an Android app. This tip will be useful for you when you download APK files from Google Play Store. Some online tools require you to provide package name for the Android app you are going to download, so we decided to write this tip here. When I first heard the word “package name” I thought this will be technical, but honestly it is no where near to that.

Go to Google Play Store, search and open your desired Android app. Now see the link in the address bar. I decided to open the link of “Subway Surfers” app. It’ll look like this:

Similarly you can check this with other popular Android apps, we tried it once again with “WhatsApp” app. See the screenshot below.

Almost all the Android application package names will begin with “com”, heard it is used to avoid name-collisions between applications. After finding the package name for your desired app, you can easily download its APK file from Google Play Store.

В свете комментария от Snicolas, я изменил выше, чтобы он не пытался разрешить идентификатор, если он равен 0. Вместо этого он использует nonLocalizedLabel в качестве отсрочки. Не нужно обертывать в try / catch.

Searching for Android apps by a package name ID

Some user networks may have difficulty finding Android apps in Systems Manager as a consequence of Internet restrictions in certain regions. To work around the search restriction, Android apps can be searched in Systems Manager by their package name ID.

One method to look up an app’s package name is to find the app in the Google Play app store using a web browser. The package name will be listed at the end of the URL after the ‘?id=’. In the example below, the package name is ‘com.google.android.gm’.

To add an app by its Package name ID:

1. Log in to Dashboard and view a SM network.
2. Navigate to the Systems Manager > Manage > Apps page.
3. Select + Add newAndroid app.
4. In the search box, enter the package name.
5. Click Lookup by ID.
   
6. Input the package name ID of the desired Android app (e.g., com.rovio.angrybirds).
7. Click Lookup by ID.
8. Click Add in the row for the app.
   
9. Configure the app’s scope and settings as desired.
10. Then click Save Changes.
