Package visibility in Android 11
On Android 10 and earlier, apps could query the full list of installed apps on the system using methods like queryIntentActivities() . In most cases, this is far broader access than is necessary for an app to implement its functionality. With our ongoing focus on privacy, we’re introducing changes on how apps can query and interact with other installed apps on the same device on Android 11. In particular, we’re bringing better scoped access to the list of apps installed on a given device.
To provide better accountability for access to installed apps on a device, apps targeting Android 11 (API level 30) will see a filtered list of installed apps by default. In order to access a broader list of installed apps, an app can specify information about apps they need to query and interact with directly. This can be done by adding a element in the Android manifest.
For most common scenarios, including any implicit intents started with startActivity() , you won’t have to change anything! For other scenarios, like opening a specific third party application directly from your UI, developers will have to explicitly list the application package names or intent filter signatures like this:
If you use Custom Tabs to open URLs, you might be calling resolveActivity() and queryIntentActivities() in order to launch a non-browser app if one is available for the URL. In Android 11 there’s a better way to do this, which avoids the need to query other apps: the FLAG_ACTIVITY_REQUIRE_NON_BROWSER intent flag. When you call startActivity() with this flag, an ActivityNotFoundException will be thrown if a browser would have been launched. When this happens, you can open the URL in a Custom Tab instead.
In rare cases, your app might need to query or interact with all installed apps on a device, independent of the components they contain. To allow your app to see all other installed apps, Android 11 introduces the QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES permission. In an upcoming Google Play policy update, look for guidelines for apps that need the QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES permission.
When targeting API level 30 and adding a element to your app, use the latest available release of the Android Gradle plugin. Soon we’ll be releasing updates to older Android Gradle plugin versions to add support for this element. You can find more information and use cases about Package Visibility in the developer documentation.

Finding App Package and App Activity for Android App : Help Center
How to find App Package and App Activity of your Android App
Test Execution of Android applications in Testsigma(or in General) requires a few characteristic details about the Application in order to locate the Application and the specific feature in the Application that is to be tested. They are:
- App Package Name
- App Activity Name
Every Android app has a unique identifier that looks like a Java package name, such as «com.example.myapp«. This ID uniquely identifies your app on the device and in Google Play Store.
Furthermore, Each Android Application contains a number of Activities or Pages and each Activity contains a number of elements such as fields or buttons that we need to test.
A simpler analogy is,
«An Activity in an Android Application is to a Web page in a Web Application or Website»
Testing requires the App Package name to locate the Application and App Activity name to pinpoint the Page to be tested.
Finding App Package and Activity
We can find the App details using the Android Debugging Bridge (ADB) interface in a Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Linux/Mac).
Prerequisite for ADB
- Android SDK should be installed and set up on the Computer.
Let us try finding the details of the Whatsapp app in this case. Please follow the steps given below:
1. Firstly, connect your Android device or emulator to the PC/Mac and open the App whose details you want to inspect i.e Whatsapp.
2. Open a Command Prompt or Terminal window and use ‘adb devices‘ command to see the list of connected devices. A list of Android devices connected to the Computer is displayed along with their device IDs as shown below:
For now, we have only one device connected to this System.
3. Finally, type the below-given command to get the information about the currently open application, i.e in our case, WhatsApp.
For Mac/Linux:
For Windows:
The Android Application Package name and Application Activity name are shown as given below:
Here, the part before the ‘/’ character i.e com.whatsapp is the Package name and the part after that i.e com.whatsapp.HomeActivity is the Activity name.
Note: We need to make sure that the WhatsApp application is opened on the device and device is not locked before the procedure. We can use the same method for finding the details of any Application installed on the device.
Info: You can also confirm the package name of an Application in the More Details section of the Application details page in Google Play Store.
Welcome to the era of #SmartTestAutomation!

However, even before spying on your girlfriend’s phone, you might have noticed some specific issues on the target phone.
To start with, once you check the phone memory in the Settings there could be newly added or doubled unique IDs of applications like com.pivotmobile.android.metrics, com.android.incallui, or com.wssyncmldm. What If My Kid Has Hidden Apps on Their Android Phone?
Recent technological developments in the mobile industry come with an outstanding set of benefits, but they can also cause a couple of headaches when trying to find hidden apps on Android. This is especially the case with parents, who are often concerned about their children’s activities on the internet.
Because they are so young, they are often susceptible to a lot of threats, such as online bullying or predatory activities.
On the bright side, parents can also utilize various software solutions that will enable them to monitor their children’s online activities. A quick online search will display the best parental control tools.
To understand their kids” mindsets better, parents should also think about why their children want to hide their activities.
These reasons may include:
- Using secret app technology to chat with their friends about inappropriate topics or talk to strangers anonymously.
- Hiding sensitive photos
- Hiding dating apps or other tools that their parents don’t allow them to use
- Find hidden adult content
What makes the online world scary is the fact that your children may be in contact with sexual predators at any given moment without your knowledge. You can mitigate this issue, though, by using internet filter software.
What Can My Spouse Hide on Their Phone?
Spouses and family relationships are other sensitive topics that should be covered.
By deciding to uncover whether your spouse is hiding something, you are risking compromising your relationship with your loved ones. Although it’s always good to find out the truth, another option is that you find nothing and break the trust for even trying to monitor their activities secretly.
However, if you suspect your spouse of cheating on you, you can try to find hidden apps on their phone and discover the truth. Your spouse may be using secret apps to talk to their friends, but also lovers.
Finding evidence is essential, especially if you plan on filing for divorce later on.
Mostly those apps are used to provide secret chats or to store private information and data such as:
- Photo contents
- Various messages
- Phone and email contacts
- Web browser history
What Are Other Options to Find Hidden Apps on Android?
If you didn’t manage to find anything special by analyzing the hidden app folder, then try installing antivirus or anti-malware solutions. Run a scan to see if anything would pop up. If nothing pops up, but you’re still suspicious, you’ll have to take it to a technician and ask for advice.
