Hi I do not believe that is currently an option

It’s OBVIOUSLY not an option. If it were, this post wouldn’t be necessary.

Most good websites are designed to be responsive and provide a mobile view to a mobile web browser. Althought I recognise that a desktop view is helpful for the few web pages that do require it, for the vast majority of people and web browsing, a mobile view is going to be preferable.

This is a matter of opinion and personal preference. This is NOT a solution.

It shouldn’t be difficult to implement/offer universal/default desktop mode, as an OPTION.

I’ve read the recommended links, and I must respectfully disagree with their assessment of the situation. Their interpretation might be more understandable and acceptable if:

• all tablets and mobile phones were identical in screen form factor
• FireFox were absolutely infallible at determining whether the client was using a tablet or mobile
• Tablets and mobiles were not offered different versions of apps or addons as a result of this determination
• many sites didn’t override the user’s menu choice with every new page or page refresh

Since the above reasons continue to be the reality while using FireFox for many of us, the current situation is at best, highly inconvenient. For those of us needing larger type and other accessibity features due to disability, forcing our tablets to function as mobile phones is crippling! Why would it be so ploblematic to give us back this functionality?

Make Firefox the default browser on Android

You can set Firefox as your default browser on your Android device.

Table of Contents

Android version 7 and newer

Tap the menu button.

Tap Settings .

Tap the Set as default browser toggle. The DEFAULT DEVICES screen displays.

Tap Browser app . The BROWSER APP screen displays.

Tap the Firefox for Android radio button.

Android version 6

1. In the Settings menu on your device, tap Apps & notifications (it may be called Apps or Applications on some versions of Android).
2. Tap Advanced (you may have to tap on the Gear icon first on some versions of Android).
3. Tap Default apps .
4. Tap Browser app to open a list of choices.
5. Tap Firefox for Android to select it.

Android version 5 and older

Step 1: Clear the current browser that opens links

1. Open the Settings application and tap on Apps . On some versions of Android, this button is labeled Applications or Application manager and you may have to tap on Manage applications before the next step.
2. Tap on the All tab.
3. Tap on the current browser that opens links. This is usually the default browser which is called «Browser» or «Internet».
4. Tap on Clear defaults to prevent this browser from opening links by default. If you haven’t installed another browser or you have installed another browser like Opera and set it as your default browser, then Clear defaults will be grayed out. If you have installed another browser, go back to the previous step and repeat with the default browser.

Step 2: Set Firefox for Android to be the default browser for opening links

1. Open a link in an Android application like the Mail application.
2. Tap on Firefox for Android and then tap on Always .

Make Mobile Firefox Always Runs in Desktop Mode

If you are using Firefox browser on your Android device, you will notice that there is a setting where you can check to “Request Desktop Site”. By default, mobile Firefox comes with a mobile user agent and most websites tend to serve a mobile site upon detecting this user agent, regardless you are using your mobile phone or a 10-inch tablet. When browsing on a tablet, you will have a better experience browsing with the desktop mode than the mobile version of the site. There are two ways that you can get mobile Firefox to run “Desktop mode” by default.

1. Desktop by Default Addon

Desktop by Default is a small addon for the mobile Firefox (works only on Android) that checks the “Request Desktop Site” option whenever a new tab is opened. This will ensure that all the websites are rendered in desktop mode.

2. Manually setting the user agent

If you are not a fan of addon, another way is to set a string to override the user agent of mobile Firefox. One thing to note is that it will render the “Request Desktop Site” option useless.

1. Open a new tab in mobile Firefox and type in the address bar “ about:config “.

2. Click the “Add a New Setting” link. Select “String” when it shows a popup.

3. Enter the string “ general.useragent.override ” for the name.

4. Next, go to UserAgentString and search for the desktop user agent that you want to use. In this case, I will use “ Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:25.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/25.0 “. Enter it as the value for the new “about:config” field created above. Click Ok.

That’s it. Restart your Firefox browser and it should render websites in desktop mode now.

If you want your Firefox for Android to ALWAYS use the Linux identification, you can create a new preference. This completely bypasses the menu item. Here’s how:

(1) Select and copy the Linux useragent string above

(2) Open a new tab to about:config (type about:config in the Awesomebar and tap the go arrow or tap Enter).

You may want to bookmark this for easier future access.

(3) Tap the large «+» button to the left of the search box to add a new setting

(A) The name of the preference should be general.useragent.override — beware that autocorrect may insert a space between user and agent, you will need to delete that space

(B) On the right side, tap Boolean and in the popup change it to String

(C) Long press in the space for the value and Paste the Linux useragent string

(D) Then click Create (if you are too slow, it may clear and you might have to start again)

You can test on this page (the useragent string is displayed in red):
