Finally, an app for my audiobooks
Over the years I have downloaded Overdrive books as well as audiobooks on cd’s with the intent of listening to them eventually on an iPod. With the advent of Bluetooth earbuds, it has become much more convenient to listen wirelessly while working in the yard or working out. I wanted to use my old iPhone 5S like an iPod, but Apple only offered Apple Music as a player when I copied my books from iTunes on my MacBook to my old phone. But that app didn’t allow bookmarks, faster listening speeds or certainty that your place in the book would be the same if you stopped listening, then started again the next day. So often, Apple Music would start up at the beginning of your current file, which file could be 70 minutes long. It’d be a pain in the neck to have to keep fast forwarding the audio to find the place where you had left off. I started to screen shot the player so that I could more easily regain my position if Apple Music had decided to go back to the 0:00 position. Thankfully, with BookPlayer, I have an app that solves all of the problems with Audiobooks that Apple Music ignored.
Simple, bugless, no annoying ads or pop ups.
This app is extremely simple. There are no ads, no glitches, and no pop ups. Pretty much nothing that annoyed me about the other 5 apps I tried. I have audio book files that I pulled off of CDs and uploaded to my google drive. They imported to this app from there easily. There are a million features that people might like which are missing from this app (pause from iPhone headphone button, select multiple files at a time, separate files from different books into their own folders, FFW/RWD) which I would’ve liked, but the features that it has work flawlessly. Namely, it remembers where you left off, allows control from lock screen, and doesn’t have annoying bugs or ads. The worst annoyance that OTHER APPS tend to have is that they forget where I left off or skip around in between listenings. This app played exactly where I left off perfectly every time I opened the app. That reliability is my favorite thing about it. Following that, its simplicity and playback speed control make using it a very pleasant experience. As long as they keep these characteristics, this will be the only app I will ever use again for audiobooks. I very much enjoy how it is designed and functions. If they can add any of the missing features that I mentioned above while maintaining all of the positive characteristics, I’ll be changing my review to five stars.
Developer Response ,
While folders are not available yet, BookPlayer now has support for playlists and remote controls as well as a brand new interface for adjustable forward and rewind. We hope you enjoy the upgrade.
Simple Audiobook Player
In the past I have used a few different audiobook players but they all have had the same problem, in the beginning they are decent but then they start to fall victim to advertising. Also many do not handle playing your own audiobooks, they want you to purchase the audiobooks from them.
This app allows me to play, replay, without advertising, audiobooks. I also really enjoy how it can be set to, once the playback has been paused, re-play a portion of the book so that I can remember where I was in the story when I left off.
I also like how it maintains where I left off in all the audiobooks that are loaded. If I get tired of listening to one book I can start listening to another book but I can always go back and start where I left off on the other audiobook, basically it makes it easy to listen to a number of audiobooks at the same time. Thank you for the great work and please continue keeping this app great.

Little lost gem!
I used this app years ago and even forgot I had it installed. And then came on a use case I’ve wanted for years — and this does it! Beautifully.
Among other things, I use Remote to control the music playing on my main Mac through AirPlay to my main entertainment system. Now I can listen to the same stream in the office, family room, and outside and am free to roam about the yard without worrying about WiFi dropping out. And I still have complete control over what is playing (and volume and more) from my iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch! Can’t wait to pair some friends phones so my Mac can serve as a jukebox at the next party! I’ve always wanted to do that!
The only thing I wish it did that it doesn’t do is allow me to Add to my library! (I think I get why and it’s not too much to go over to Music and do it and then come back.)
Well done Apple.
Edited, working fantastically
After this latest update and MacOS update, working swimmingly. I love that my whole house AirPlay Setup works as designed once again!
Old rating: Had I known about the iTunes remote breaking when this Catalina upgrade came about, it would have been a deal breaker. I’ve had this app for years and used it regularly to stream music to all my airplay speakers. Worked wonderfully.
I put Catalina on my mac, and it’s broken. Apple would be wise to fix, with all the issues with the iOS and macOS, which they absurdly and uncharacteristically botched, and the anger in the community over this among other “losses”, which outweigh the “enhancements”. Apple, you were better than this.
Missing key feature
This is one of the most used apps I have on my IOS devices, using it to control a headless Mac mini music server. There are no iTunes alternatives available I’m aware off, as such it is important to me that it continues to remain relevant. For the most part it works flawlessly with a local music library, what it doesn’t do is quite astonishing, it doesn’t allow selecting music from Apple Music. If I choose an album or song in Apple Music using Remote Desktop from a Mac and then start iTunes Remote on iPad it appears in now playing and functions normally so it seems feasible. Please Apple update this app with Apple Music functionality, don’t make me email Tim Cook over such an obvious shortcoming.
Updated: Apple is rolling out lossless HiRez Apple Music soon, yet this their only remote app for controlling the Music App still cannot see any of the Apple Music streaming stuff. While Roon and Audirvana’s remote apps can do just that with their apps controlling HiRez streaming services like Qobuz and Tidal.
