Materials You’ll Need:

  • 12-inch cast-iron skillet
  • Large bowl
  • Knife
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Utensils for stirring
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Ingredients:

Fried Apples

  • 4 large honey crisp apples
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 6 pats of butter
  • 1 cup of water

Crisp Topping

  • 2 cups of oat granola (low sugar or honey-based)
  • 1 cup of chopped pecans
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of flour
  • ½ stick of softened butter

Instructions:

Fried Apples

  1. Slice your unpeeled honey crisp apples and place the slices in your cast iron skillet.
  2. Sprinkle your cinnamon, brown sugar and vanilla onto the apple slices and mix it together.
  3. Add 6 pats (small slices) of butter and fry the apples over medium heat for 15 minutes or until the contents become soft. Make sure to stir the apples while frying.
  4. Once done frying, pour your cup of water into the skillet and mix it with the apple slices.
  5. Let the apples simmer while you make your crisp topping. Make sure you keep tabs on your skillet to avoid burning your apple slices.

Crisp Topping

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Get a large mixing bowl and pour in your granola, chopped pecans, cinnamon, brown sugar and flour.
  3. Add your softened butter and mix the contents together until its texture becomes «crumbly.»
  4. Sprinkle your crisp topping over the apple slices while it’s still in the skillet.
  5. Bake the dish for 15 minutes or until it becomes golden brown in color.
  6. Serve with ice cream if desired.

Should I peel my apples?

This is one of those times where it’s totally up to you and your personal tastes.

I tend to not peel my apples, because I am lazy, and the peels soften while they cook.

However, if you hate to eat the peel on an apple, then by all means get to peeling!

While it isn’t important to peel your apples for Fried Apples, it is important to remove the core and slice them evenly so they cook at the same rate.

What type of apples should I use for Fried Apples?

You can use any type of apple you have on hand, they will all work to make delicious fried apples.

However, if you are buying apples specifically to make this fried apples recipe, I highly recommend a crisp, tart green apple like a Granny Smith.

Just like in apple pie, green apples are not too sweet and they hold their texture perfectly when fried.

How to make fried apples

There are just a few very easy steps to make fried apples:

  1. Core/Slice apples.
  2. Fry with butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon and salt in a cast iron skillet.
  3. Once tender, up the heat to thicken the sweet sauce.
  4. Serve and watch them disappear!

Start to finish, this fried apple recipe takes about 30 minutes.

Some people will tell you that you can make fried apples in just 15 minutes, but those won’t be as delicious as 30 minute fried apples!

Sure you can rush them, but if you give your apples time, they will become perfectly tender and caramelized with a thick, sweet sauce.

These easy Fried Apples are tender, sweet and have the perfect amount of cinnamon to warm them up.

It’s hard to find any apple butter, let alone good apple butter in the grocery store these days. Making apple butter is a great way to preserve the fruits of an apple harvest.

What is Apple Butter?

Apple butter is made by slowly cooking pureed apples for over an hour. The sugars in the apples caramelize as the puree cooks, giving the apple butter its rich, sweet flavor and dark color.

In contrast to what the name implies, there is no «butter» in apple butter. The name comes from its smooth and buttery texture. Apple butter is delicious on buttered toast.

Don’t Throw Away Your Apple Cores!

Although apple butter takes time to make, the upfront part is easy. You do not have to peel or core the apples.

The pectin for firming up the resulting apple butter resides mostly in the cores and there is a lot of flavor in the apple peels. After the first cooking, these parts get discarded as the pulp is run through a food mill.

This recipe produces a traditional apple butter, which is both sweet and sour, the addition of cider vinegar just intensifying the flavor and giving it its tangy edge. It’s seasoned with cinnamon, cloves, allspice and lemon.

The Difference Between Applesauce and Apple Butter

Apple butter is a smoother, more concentrated form of applesauce. The methods for making the two both start out similarly, by slow-cooking apples until they’re soft and mushy. Applesauce will be ready at this saucy stage, sometimes with the addition of sugar and/or spices to flavor it. But to make apple butter, you puree the stewed apples and cook them down further so more liquid evaporates and the apples caramelize.

Alternatives to Stovetop Cooking

Don’t love standing at the stove stirring for ages? These two methods are way more hands-off.

  • Microwave: Instead of cooking the seasoned puree on the stovetop in Step 5, cook it uncovered in a microwave, on medium heat setting to simmer, for around 30 minutes. If you do this, monitor the cooking every 5 or 10 minutes. Microwaves vary in their power.
  • Slow cooker: In Step 5, transfer the seasoned puree to a slow cooker. Cook on low with the lid ajar (lay spoons across the cooker and set the lid on top) so steam can escape. Stir once every hour or so. Depending on your cooker, it could take up to 5 hours for the apple butter to cook down.

The Best Apples for Apple Butter

Look to softer apples, like Gravenstein, to make apple butter, as they will cook down faster. We also like the tart flavor of Granny Smith apples. Combine different apples to match your taste preferences. We recommend the following varieties:

  • Braeburn
  • Cortland
  • Fuji
  • McIntosh
  • Golden Delicious
  • Jonagold

Swaps and Suggestions for Homemade Apple Butter

  • Switch up the spices. This recipe calls for cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and some lemon to bring out the flavor, but feel free to play around with others spices such as ginger and nutmeg if you wish.

To Can or Not to Can?

Want to make larger batches of apple butter so you can have jars on hand for later and not worry about refrigerating them? Planning to give jars as gifts? If so, sterilize glass jars for canning. We offer detailed directions for water bath canning in the recipe below.

If you want to eat your apple butter up quickly, skip the canning. It keeps in the fridge for weeks as long as you’re not dipping dirty spoon into it. Or freeze it for later.

NOTE: For this recipe to be safe for canning, the sugar levels should not be reduced lower than to 1/3 cup sugar per 1 cup apple pulp.

Storing and Freezing Apple Butter

  • Fresh apple butter will keep in the fridge for at least couple of weeks, if not longer.
  • Sealed, canned jars of apple butter will keep for years in the pantry (they’re best used within a year, though). Once opened, they’ll also keep for weeks in the refrigerator.
  • Frozen apple butter will keep up to a year.

Each variety of apple will bring a little something different to the recipe. Keep in mind that firmer apples will hold their shape better and won’t turn mushy when heated.
  • Lemon juice (optional): Either freshly squeezed or bottled will work just fine. The citric acid in lemons prevents apples from oxidizing and keeps them fresh longer.
  • Butter: I use salted butter.
  • Brown sugar: Maple syrup can be used instead of brown sugar if you prefer.
  • Spices: My favorite spices to use when making fried apples are cinnamon and nutmeg. You can leave the spices out if you don’t have them on hand but these spices add a tremendous amount of flavor.

  2. Melt the butter in a 10-inch skillet over medium heat.
