Set up your Apple TV

To get started with your Apple TV, follow these steps.

Here’s what you need

• Personal Internet*
• A TV or other display with an HDMI port
• An HDMI cable (On Apple TV 4K, you need an HDMI 2.0 or later compatible cable)

If you want to set up your Apple TV with your iOS device, do these things first on your iOS device:

*Apple TV doesn’t support public or subscription networks with sign-in requirements.

Choose your Apple TV

Set up your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD

To go back to a previous screen during setup, press the Menu button on your remote. To start over, unplug your Apple TV from power, then plug it back in.

Plug it in and turn on your TV

Plug your Apple TV into power and connect it to your TV with an HDMI cable. To watch movies in 4K HDR on Apple TV 4K, make sure that you’re using an HDMI 2.0 or later cable, and have a TV that supports 4K, HDR, or both. Then turn on your TV and select the HDMI input that your Apple TV is connected to.

If you don’t want to connect to Wi-Fi during setup, you can connect your Apple TV to your router with an Ethernet cable.

Choose your language, and turn on Siri

Swipe on the Touch surface of your Apple TV Remote to find your language and country or region. To choose an option, click the Touch surface. If you choose the wrong language, press the Menu button to return to the previous screen.

If asked, choose whether to use Siri.

Continue setup with your iOS device or set up manually

To automatically add your Apple ID and Wi-Fi settings to your Apple TV, choose Set Up with Device. Then unlock your iOS device, hold it next to your Apple TV, and follow the onscreen steps on your iOS device and Apple TV.

If you don’t want to set up your Apple TV with your iOS device, choose Set Up Manually. Then follow the onscreen steps on your Apple TV to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and sign in with your Apple ID.

If you don’t have an Apple ID, you can create one. If you forgot your Apple ID, learn what to do.

Sign in with your TV provider

In some countries and regions, you might be able to sign in with your TV or cable provider on your Apple TV to watch TV shows and movies included in your cable or TV subscription.

Choose settings

Turn on One Home Screen to keep the Home screen and apps the same across every Apple TV. Choose a room where your Apple TV is to automatically add it to the Home app on your iOS device and Mac. Or add users to your Apple TV.

Get apps and start streaming

When setup is complete, you’ll see the Home screen. From here, you can watch your favorite shows, movies, and discover more of what you love to watch in the Apple TV app. You can also download games and apps from the App Store.

What Is Apple TV? How Does It Work?

Apple TV takes the idea of smart television to the next level

Apple TV isn’t an actual television set. It’s a streaming device similar to Roku and Amazon’s Fire TV used to access streaming content from all your favorite TV and movie providers.

The little black box is an inch-and-a-half tall, less than four inches along its sides, and runs on a platform similar to the iPhone and iPad, which means you can download a whole host of apps and games including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and others.

What Is Apple TV?

Apple TV streams movies and TV shows to your HDTV, similar to Roku and Google’s Chromecast, but that is only one feature. You can also listen to and watch podcasts on it, play games, stream music, and much more. It all depends on the apps you install. Some programs are free, some cost money, and some are free to download but have a service you have to buy to use it (e.g., HBO).

The only two things you will need to set up Apple TV (besides an actual TV) are an HDMI cable (not included) and an internet connection. Apple TV includes an Ethernet port for a hardwired Internet connection and also supports Wi-Fi. It also comes with a remote control.

Once you hook it up to your TV via the HDMI cable and turn it on, you’ll run through a short setup program. This process includes entering your Apple ID, which is the same ID you use to sign in to iTunes and to download apps on your iPad. You’ll also need to type in your Wi-Fi information if you’re connecting wirelessly.

If you have an iPhone, you can use it to speed up this process. Apple TV and the iPhone will share some of this information for you, avoiding the painful process of inputting information using a remote.

What Can Apple TV Do?

Apple TV turns your television into a «smart» TV. You can rent movies or stream your collection from iTunes, stream movies and TV shows from apps like Netflix and Hulu Plus, stream music through Apple Music and Pandora, listen to podcasts, and even use it to replace your traditional cable TV subscription with services like Sling TV.

The newest version of the hardware, Apple TV 4K, has the same fast processor that powers the iPad Pro, which makes it as powerful as most laptop computers. It also has a graphics processor with enough power to turn it into a game console.

Apple’s streaming box is also part of the Apple ecosystem, which means it works great alongside your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. You can view your iCloud Photo Library on your TV, including the «Memories» photo album videos the iPad and iPhone create automatically from your photo albums. You can also use AirPlay to throw your iPhone or iPad screen to your TV, letting you interact with any app on your smartphone or tablet using your big-screen television.

Does Apple TV Work With HomeKit?

Apple TV also gives you access to Siri and can become a base station for HomeKit. The remote includes a Siri button, allowing you to control your TV by voice. You can also use the Siri-like functionality for requests such as telling you the actors in a specific movie or asking it to display movies from a specific genre, actor, or director.

HomeKit works as the headquarters for your smart home. If you have smart appliances like a thermostat or lights, you can use HomeKit to control them. You can even use your iPhone away from home to communicate with Apple TV in your home to control your smart devices.

What Are the Differences Between the Apple TV Models?

There are currently two different models for sale and one model recently discontinued. And as you can expect, there are some big differences between them.

• Apple TV 4K. This is the flagship Apple TV model; it supports 4K and HDR video and contains the same A10 processor as the iPad Pro. If you’re looking to buy Apple TV, this is the top-shelf model.
• Apple TV (4th Generation). This model supports 1080p HD video and has the A8 processor, which is the same processor as the iPhone 6. While you may be tempted to buy the 4th-generation if you don’t have a television that supports 4K or HDR, this model not only buys you the ability to upgrade your television in the future, it also doubles the speed of the processor and quadruples the speed of the graphics.
• Apple TV (3rd Generation). This model is no longer available, but you may find one at auction sites like eBay or person-to-person sites like Craigslist. This version delivers video streaming capabilities without the processing power, and it doesn’t have access to the App Store. It’s cheaper than the other models because it’s older, but you may be better off investing in another streaming device like a Roku or Amazon Fire TV.

What Is Apple TV 4K?

While priced higher than all of its competitors, Apple TV 4K may end up being the best bargain in streaming devices. Apple TV 4K is great for many reasons, the best of which being that if you own one, Apple will upgrade your iTunes movie library to 4K.

The average cost difference between an HD version of a movie and a 4K version of a movie is around $5-$10. If you have ten movies in your iTunes movie library, you are getting around a $75 value in the upgrade to 4K alone. If you have twenty-five movies, Apple TV 4K practically pays for itself.

If you don’t already own a movie, Apple will let you pick up the 4K version for the same price as the HD. You won’t have to pay a premium to get the same movie in its best format.

In terms of picture quality, Apple TV 4K supports both 4K resolution and HDR10. While 4K has all the buzz, High Dynamic Range (HDR) may be more important to picture quality. As Apple puts it, 4K gives you more pixels on your screen, while HDR gives you better pixels. Instead of just increasing the resolution, HDR gives you a higher range of colors that increases the quality and depth of the image. Apple TV 4K also supports Dolby Vision, which is a form of HDR with an even higher color range.

But Apple TV isn’t just about streaming video. Its powerful processor makes it able to play games, and it has so much power that you might start seeing productivity apps like Numbers and Pages come to the Apple TV.

Apple TV 4K also shines with internet connectivity. Not only does it include a 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, but it also has the latest Wi-Fi technology including MIMO, which stands for multiple-in-multiple-out. If you have a dual-band router, Apple TV 4K essentially connects to it twice (once on each «band»). The doubled-up wireless connection can be faster than a single wired one, and it is especially helpful when dealing with 4K content.

What Is the Apple TV App?

Since we live in a world of streaming where lots of things are available at any time, it can be a bit paralyzing to figure out what to watch. And thanks to so many different services, where to watch it.

Apple’s answer is a new app called «TV.» In many ways, it is the same as what you get when you open Hulu Plus or another similar app. You’ll see a variety of different shows and movies starting with those you’ve recently watched and expanding to suggested titles. The difference is that these videos are coming from a variety of sources, like Hulu Plus, HBO Now, and your movie collection in iTunes.

The TV app gathers this content in one place so you can easily browse through all of it. It even has a Sports channel that shows live events including the current scores. Unfortunately, Netflix isn’t part of Apple’s TV app, so you’ll still need to check that app independently.

Is There Any Reason to Buy the Non-4K Apple TV?

Even if you never plan on upgrading to a 4K television, the upgrade in processing speed, graphics performance (which quadruples with Apple TV 4K), and internet speed are easily worth the $30 extra you will pay for the 4K version.

The main reason to consider the non-4K version is if you’re not as interested in the various apps and games you can download from the App Store. But in this case, you may be better off looking into cheaper solutions such as a Roku stick.

You have two choices of storage levels in the Apple TV 4K: 32 GB and 64 GB. The difference is $20 and it seems silly to not spend the additional $20 to get more storage, but Apple has never given a compelling reason why you should spend the additional money.

You can pair the Siri remote when you set up Apple TV. If you need to pair it again after setup, point the remote three inches away from your Apple TV. Then, press and hold Menu and Volume Up for five seconds. Finally, place the remote on top of the Apple TV to complete pairing if prompted.

There are three ways to delete apps on Apple TV. However, the easiest way is to highlight the app, press and hold the touchpad, and then select Play/Pause > Delete > Delete.

Apple TV Plus is different from the Apple TV or the Apple TV app. It’s Apple’s subscription streaming service. Subscribers have access to original content available only on Apple TV+.

Стоит ли покупать приставку Apple TV 4K 2021

На весенней презентации помимо поисковых трекеров AirTag, новых iPad Pro на чипе M1 и потрясающих 24-дюймовых разноцветных iMac Apple представила обновленную приставку Apple TV 4K с новым пультом управления Siri Remote. Устройство осталось в тени других новинок, поскольку нововведений в нем не очень много, особенно если сравнивать с тем же iMac 24. Но тем не менее они есть. Попробуем разобраться во всех ключевых фишках новинки и стоит ли обновляться владельцам предыдущей Apple TV 4K 2017 года.

Что нового в Apple TV 2021

Стоит заметить, что дизайн обновленной приставки ничуть не изменился по сравнению с версией 2017 года. Это по-прежнему черная лаконичная коробочка, матовая сверху и глянцевая по сторонам, с матовым сильно царапающимся дном. Наверху красуется название продукта в виде логотипа Apple и букв TV.

Какой процессор в Apple TV 4K 2021 года

Стоит сказать, что в фирменную приставку, представленную осенью 2017 года, инженеры из Купертино установили процессор A10X Fusion, который с успехом использовался в iPad Pro 2017 года. Довольно мощное на тот момент железо с легкостью позволяло просматривать видео в 4К из фирменного магазина iTunes Store и играть в игры, предлагаемые на просторах App Store. После запуска собственного игрового сервиса Apple Arcade оказалось, что мощностей встроенного чипа вполне хватает для всех представленных там игр. Впрочем, к самому сервису было довольно много вопросов, прежде всего в отношении ассортимента и качества самих игр. И честно говоря, Arcade, несмотря даже на недавнее появление в нем пары-тройки интересных игрушек, все-таки стагнировал за последний год.

Видимо, пытаясь стимулировать разработчиков писать более качественные и интересные игры, требовательные к железу, все еще не оставившие идею сделать из Apple TV полноценного конкурента Nvidia Shield инженеры Apple установили в обновленную приставку 2021 года процессор A12 Bionic с 64‑битной архитектурой. Он использовался в iPhone XR, XS и XS Max, а также планшетах iPad Air 3, iPad mini 5, iPad 8 и iPad Pro 2018 и 2020 года. Может возникнуть вполне резонный вопрос, а почему не последний чип от iPhone 12 под названием A14 Bionic или, допустим, M1, который установили в новый iPad Pro?

По поводу M1 все ясно, он предназначен для профессиональных устройств, которые позиционируются для создания контента — компьютеров Mac и профессиональных планшетов. Установка его в телеприставку просто не имеет смысла в виду решаемых ею задач. Да и конкурировать по цене Apple TV 4K с M1 на борту просто не смогла бы с армией более дешевых аналогов из Китая на базе Android TV.

Сравнение Apple A12 и Apple A14

А вот если сравнить процессоры A12 и A14, то тут можно открыть для себя некоторые интересные факты. Процессор A12 Bionic выполнен по 7-нанометровому техпроцессу и содержит 6,9 млрд транзисторов. Работает на частоте 2,4 ГГц и содержит два вычислительных ядра производительности (для сложных вычислительных задач); четыре вычислительных ядра эффективности (для повседневных дел); четыре графических ядра (с поддержкой технологии Metal 2), а также 8‑ядерный нейропроцессор Neural Engine. Вышедший через два года A14 Bionic выполнен по 5-нанометровому техпроцессу и содержит 11,8 млрд транзисторов. Работает на частоте 2,99 ГГц и содержит те же самые два вычислительных ядра производительности (для сложных вычислительных задач); четыре вычислительных ядра эффективности (для повседневных дел); четыре графических ядра (с поддержкой технологии Metal 2), отличаясь только 16-ядерным нейропроцессором Neural Engine. Даже кэши у процессоров одинаковые L1 256 Кб и L2 8 Mb.

Конечно, процессор A14 однозначно производительнее и энергоэффективнее своего предшественника двухгодичной давности, но видимо,и производительности A12 Bionic на сегодняшний день с головой хватает, чтобы рубиться в самые требовательные игры из магазина App Store и тем более воспроизводить видео в 4К HDR (Dolby Vision) из Apple TV+ или Netflix. Кроме того, на выборе чипа в пользу A12 мог сказаться дефицит современных A14, необходимых для производства линейки iPhone 12 и банальная жадность Apple, не позволяющая ставить в устройства, которые не получится продавать по неадекватно высокой цене, процессоры, предназначенные для флагманов, пользующихся высоким спросом.

Какой стандарт HDMI используется в новой Apple TV 4K

Предыдущая версия приставки имела разъем стандарта 2.0a и при этом великолепно справлялась с выводом 4К HDR 10 видео. Также на соответствующих стриминговых площадках было доступно 4К Dolby Vision видео. Подробнее обо всех форматах мы уже писали пару месяцев назад в статье, посвященной вопросу, где брать качественный контент в 2021 году для просмотра на Apple TV.

В обновленной версии используется стандарт HDMI 2.1, а это уже большой задел на будущее. Пока Apple не раскрывает весь потенциал своего гаджета, но в ближайшем обновлении tvOS мы сможем оценить обещанные на презентации 4К видео с частотой 60 Hz, а затем и с удвоенной частотой, т.е. 4К 120 Гц в HDR. Это по достоинству должны оценить прежде всего любители смотреть на большом экране спортивные трансляции в высоком качестве. Безусловно, телевизор также должен поддерживать стандарт HDMI 2.1 и «уплавнялку» наподобие технологии ProMotion, позволяющую увеличивать частоту кадров до 120 Гц для отображения соответствующего телевизионного контента либо игр.

Какой WiFi в обновленной приставке Apple TV 4K

Еще с позапрошлого года Apple стала оснащать мобильные гаджеты WiFi 6 (802.11 ax). Первыми устройствами, получившими такие радиомодули, были iPhone 11. На сегодняшний день такой WiFi имеют все актуальные iPhone и недавно обновившиеся iPad Pro, а также все компьютеры на чипе М1. В 2021 году дошла очередь и до Apple TV 4K. Теперь лучшая в мире телеприставка обладает скоростным WiFi 6 (802.11 ax) с технологией MIMO, при этом поддерживается одновременная передача данных в двух диапазонах (2,4 ГГц и 5 ГГц). В дипазоне 5 ГГц теоретически достижимая скорость передачи до 11 Гбит/с, тогда как на предыдущем WiFi 5 (802.11 ac) в этом диапазоне теоретически достижимая скорость 6,77 Гбит/с.

Новый радиомодуль позволит, например, более надежно проигрывать с удаленного компьютера в сети либо с NAS какие-то тяжелые образы Blu-ray либо Ultra HD по WiFi не прибегая к проводному подключению.

Какой пульт используется в новой Apple TV 4K

Одним из самых главных отличий обновленной телеприставки является совершенно новый пульт Siri Remote. Для нашего региона он называется Apple Remote, так как Siri и голосовой поиск в tvOS недоступны на русском языке. Предыдущий сенсорный пульт был шедевром дизайнерской и инженерной мысли, но многие в нашем Телеграм-чате так и не смогли привыкнуть к свайповому управлению на верхней, чувствительной к прикосновению и кликабельной панели. И вздыхали, вспоминая старый алюминиевый пульт с кольцом, которое можно было нажимать вверху, внизу, слева и справа, а подтверждать выбор кнопкой по середине.

Новый пульт также выполнен из цельного серебристого алюминия с черными кнопками и выглядит вполне стильно. В нем совместили идею кольца, имеющего четыре кнопки и кнопку выбора в центре с чувствительной к касанию панелью и назвали все это сенсорным кликпадом. Теперь выбор объектов в интерфейсе tvOS можно осуществлять, нажимая на кнопки по сторонам кольца, для прокрутки длинного плейлиста можно смахнуть пальцем по кликпаду, а для точной навигации по фильму (перемотке вперед-назад) нужно водить пальцем по кольцу, прямо как некогда в знаменитом iPod.

Также из нововведений у Siri Remote кнопка вызова голосового ассистента переехала на бок по аналогии с боковой кнопкой iPhone, при удержании которой собственно и запускается Siri. Приятным бонусом стало добавление кнопки отключения звука (Mute) в виде перечеркнутого динамика и кнопки управления питанием телевизора или ресивера, скорее всего через ИК порт. Это очень напоминает пульты от китайских ТВ приставок на Android, таких как Xiaomi Mi Box. Для меня, например, кнопка включения/отключения питания не актуальна, так как любой современный телевизор великолепно включается по протоколу HDMI CEC, когда запускается приставка и отключается, когда она уходит в сон.

Аналогично можно настроить взаимодействие с саундбарами и ресиверами. Поэтому нововведение оценят либо обладатели старых телевизоров, либо те, у кого к современному телевизору помимо Apple TV к разным HDMI разъемам одновременно подключены еще приставка на Android вроде NVidia Shield или Xiaomi Mi Box, консоль Sony PlayStation или Microsoft XBox, и в связи с этим между всеми этими гаджетами происходят конфликты через протокол HDMI CEC.

Этот пульт — настоящий шедевр эргономики и дизайна

Но есть и очень грустный момент — новый пульт Siri Remote (Apple Remote) лишился гироскопа и акселерометра, которые были в предыдущем сенсорном стеклянном пульте и позволяли играть во многие игры из App Store, используя пульт вместо геймпада.

Помню как мы играли так в Asphalt 8 и Hit Tennis 3. Теперь, чтобы поиграть на обновленной приставке в игры, придется либо найти старый пульт, либо докупить геймпад. Однако справедливости ради замечу, что еще два года назад с запуском Arcade появились игры, которые требовали обязательного подключения к приставке геймпада, и количество таких игр постоянно растет, поэтому не нахожу ничего удивительного в том, что сначала Apple добавила в tvOS поддержку XBox Wireless Controller и PlayStation DualShock, которые стало возможно использовать наряду с более дорогим SteelSeries Nimbus+ сертифицированным по MFi, а затем “выпилила” игровые функции из родного пульта от приставки.

Как откалибровать телевизор с помощью iPhone и новой Apple TV 4K

На презентации нам показали еще одну функцию обновленной телеприставки. Теперь при появлении всплывающего окошка “Баланс цвета” на iPhone, с помощью которого настраивалась приставка, нужно тапнуть “Продолжить” и поднести смартфон к телевизору передней камерой, удерживая его в рамке, появившейся на экране на расстоянии не более 2,5 см.

В результате должна произойти очередная магия Apple. Используя датчики iPhone, будет произведена калибровка вывода Apple TV 4K на телевизор с тем, чтобы последний показывал корректный баланс по шкале серого и корректные цвета. Интересно будет взглянуть, какой это дает эффект в реальности, однако думаю, киноманы предпочтут калибровать свои телевизоры вручную соответствующими настройками.

Теперь для правильной настройки цветового баланса достаточно просто поднести iPhone к телевизору

Кому стоит покупать обновленную приставку Apple TV 4K

Скажу сразу, если у вас никогда не было Apple TV 4K, либо была приставка предыдущего поколения — Apple TV HD, вам однозначно стоит брать новый гаджет 2021 года с заделом на будущее. Поскольку при нынешнем развитии стриминговых сервисов и ассортименте контента эта покупка будет актуальной еще года 3-4 как минимум. Также стоит присмотреться к новой приставке и любителям спортивных трансляций, для которых очень важно выводить 4К HDR видео с высокой частотой, ну и у которых это позволяет реализовать современный телевизор.

То же самое рекомендую и любителям игр. Киноманам и прочим владельцам Apple TV 4K 2017 года, думаю, пока не стоит тратиться на обновление. Дело в том, что на данный момент попросту нет ни одного фильма в 4К HDR с частотой 60 Гц, а тем более 120 Гц, да и не будет скорее всего. Ну и ни один проектор на сегодняшний день не поддерживает HDMI 2.1 со всеми вытекающими отсюда последствиями. Все описанные нововведения Apple будет вводить последовательно и прежде всего для телевизоров, что же касается проекторов для домашних кинозалов, то здесь за глаза еще на несколько лет хватит приставки 2017 года.
