Privacy and permissions:

• add-on by default makes NO remote requests to my Cloud server or Google or any other service!
• if user creates cloud account on https://group-speed-dial.fastaddons.com page, add-on will synchronize his dials with the cloud server
• there is NO tracking of visited pages or user activity! There is only history (backup) of changes made to your dials — stored locally on your PC and NOT synchronized with cloud.
• favicons are downloaded directly — if possible, else Google service can be used — MUST BE ENABLED by user in Options page first!
• permission «Access your data for all websites» in only used to get page title (used to set proper name of the dial) and monitor resolution (used to create thumbnail with correct resolution). My add-on cannot access anything else from pages you visit! Both of these scripts can be verified by checking «browser.tabs.executeScript» methods in «background_gsd.js» file.
• permission «Hide and show browser tabs» is used to create hidden tab, where thumbnails are created
• permission «Access browser activity during navigation» is only used while generating thumbnail!

Known issues:

• the default «Refresh dial» may not work for some highly protected pages like Facebook or banks — use «Refresh by visiting page» instead
• thumbnail creation is not perfect — some pages are loading their content asynchronously and thumbnail may be created incomplete — use delay function «+ 5s»

Known Firefox issues:(feel free to up-vote any of these)

• BEWARE — loosing all your data can happen if you downgrade back to Firefox ESR 60 from current Firefox! Luckily you can use «History / backups» feature in upper right corner menu to restore your dials data. More info here.
• dials to local files — protocol «file://» — are supported, HOWEVER clicking them is currently forbidden by Firefox security
• Ctrl + Tab switches to hidden Reloading tab
• in Firefox 61 the address-bar is not focused when opening new Firefox window
• in Firefox 61 changing New tab page to «about:home» doesn’t work — use Firefox 60 ESR and vote for these bug1bug2
• auto-reload will exit full-screen videos (until it’s fixed in Firefox 62, enable «Keep reloading tab opened after reloading» in Options page / Thumbnails)
• if you setup GroupSpeedDial as homepage — opening very first Firefox window may show blank page and address-bar won’t be selected, see also this bug
• Firefox prevents add-ons from using internal database when history is disabled. You can enable History in «Firefox / Options / Privacy & Security / History»
• common database corruption issues (IndexedDB API)
• dials to internal pages like «about:addons» or «about:debugging» and dials to other extension pages like «moz-extension://. » are forbidden by Firefox security

Note:

• This add-on is in active development and there are many new features on the way!
  (I wrote this statement almost three years ago (in November 2016) and it’s still true!)

I imported the settings from FVD Speed Dial. However, the thumbnails were not applied, so I set the dials one by one. This was a very painful process. I had to open the same folder for each dial, open the image with the same name as the dial, and set the position to the center. I had to do the same thing over and over again until I lost my mind. Why can’t it set all at once for each group? I synced the cloud-dials with my main PC, but the visuals remained «Create thumbnail» in Firefox on my other laptop. I don’t have the energy to do the same painstaking work on my laptop anymore. Please let me know if there is a solution.

Thanks for the suggestion, no more despairing about syncing between PCs.
I’m looking forward to the new version which will make thumbnail setting easier.
For example, it would be nice to be able to batch register images with the same name as the dial as thumbnails from the local hard disk. And it would be easier to specify the visual position as a whole, and select the exceptions individually later.

Hello,
You can transfer data including thumbnails — just check the «export also thumbnails» checkbox when exporting them (from Options page / Import backup tab).
If you want to synchronize them through the cloud, you need to enable thumbnails synchronization in the Options page / Thumbnails / «Enable automatic thumbnails synchronization».

Trying to add images on the dials is a nightmare as with FVD the sizing was NEVER an issue now I have to try and find a proper size for the dial. If this is ever resolved the rating will go up.

**Update to reply*** — Again NEVER needed to do ANY of this with FVD so even though that addon was «shady» at least it was easy. Your basically only speed dial alternative so I am going to continue using but having all these extra steps that I never needed to do before is what kills your rating from me. Sorry just my honest review.

Hello,
If you are adding custom images, make sure to change «Position» to «Center (contain)». You can do it in the Edit dial window / Visual.
I know some things are not as intuitive as it should be. I will be releasing new version next week that should simplify things 🙂

Hello,
I know some things are not as intuitive as it should be and visuals are basic. but there is many options and you should be able to tune it into your liking.
What you were probably looking for was the «Edit group» window (when you right click group name) where you can change number of rows / columns and even make the group scrollable to fit more dials.
The synchronization should work without any issues across devices and browsers, just make sure you are logged in the same account.
Regarding most-used dials, yeah, this is indeed missing since there is no tracking of user activity. I will try to implement something something for it in the near future.

Works well after a steep learning curve. Only showstopper I found was after meticulously setting it up in Firefox and exporting including thumbnails, it fails to import that file into a fresh install on Chrome. Ideally, this local export should make any browser it’s imported into look exactly the same, wallpaper, sizes, and thumbnail pics.

5 stars if this is possible and works, along with adding the ability to globally make «Center (contain)» the default.

Yeah, the «Center (contain)» should be default for custom images, I will fix this in the upcoming release.

Also, you say import in Chrome failed? That’s sounds impossible, it’s build from the same source code, it must work :). I will investigate now. And you are right, after the import it will look exactly the same.

If you have a lot of dials and thumbnails, the import may take a while depending on your drive speed (slow SSD can take a whole minute or more to import 40MB backup file).
Could you please write me to my support email what was the size of the exported file? And was there some error written? And did the dials at least partially imported?

Everything was perfect until I updated FF several days ago, and then Speed Dial started to crash FF and itself also. Now it dont even show my bookmarks and groups, and shows an error.

Hello,
Please contact me to my support email if the problem persist.
But in general this is a Firefox specific error that often disappears after restarting Firefox or whole PC.
If you can see it even after the restart, then I would suggest you to reinstall my add-on. But make sure to export your dials to a file first — from the Options page / Import backup tab (you can export also your thumbnails).

Excellent, except compatibility issues with First Party Isolation.

The thumbnail images are not shown and not able to successfully refresh them.

When disabling First Party Isolation and restarting Firefox, then for 1 time images are shown. And then, again, there are no thumbnail images.

Windows 10, any Firefox edition.

Interesting. so it seems that the «First Party Isolation» will isolate whole add-on (not just the new tab) into a special container — so thumbnails needs to be created in both .
This is different from «Firefox Multi-Account Containers» which isolates only a tab.

Anyway, since whole add-on is running in in isolation, there is no way to access thumbnails from different «sandbox».
The only way to fix this would be to replace the IndexedDB database used for thumbnails (which is being isolated) and replace it with normal storage. However I would have to add «Unlimited storage» permission (because thumbnails and backups usually takes more than 5MB of storage).
This is a problem because ALL of my users will be prompted to agree with a new permission.

So this is really bad.
I can also see that it breaks the cloud synchronization which is using cookie — this is also very hard to fix.

Anyway — as you can see, there is no easy solution.
The only thing I could do is introduce some «Auto create all missing thumbnails» option that will help you create missing thumbnails when you enable/disable isolation.
