● в гаджете установлен огромный, как для карманного продукта Apple, 4,44-дюймовый дисплей;
● естественно, аппарат значительно больше, чем iPhone 4, но при этом он тоньше;
● кнопка Home получила овальную форму и тоже стала больше;
Hard Candy:
Ждать осталось совсем чуть-чуть, скоро мы все узнаем. [Cult of Mac]

Hard Candy loses big on cases for rumored iPhone 5 design
— Oct. 14th 2011 7:57 am PT
Update: Hard Candy CEO Tim Hickman reached out on 9to5Mac to talk about the experience. His full comment after the break.
Ever wonder exactly what iPhone case manufacturers go through prior to an next-gen iPhone unveiling? When it comes to Tim Hickman and his company Hard Candy Cases, the process consisted of spending more than $50,000 to create cases based on a rumored iPhone 5 design that never came to fruition. He even started taking pre-orders on his site.
Based on tipsters in China who sent Hickman 3D models claiming to be that of the, at that point, yet to be unveiled next-gen iPhone and sporting a widened Home button and tapered design, the company got to work. Unfortunately, when October 4th rolled around, that design was nowhere to be seen. Bloomberg reports:
“After three separate manufacturing partners in China sent him detailed 3D models of an iPhone with a widened, pill-shaped “home” button and a slightly tapered back, Hickman decided to roll the dice. He paid $50,000 to make steel moldings to mass-produce cases for the new design and, on the morning of Apple’s announcement, began taking orders on his website. The gamble backfired…Hickman suddenly owned $50,000 worth of paperweights.”
Hickman is hoping his $50,000 investment will pay off with the design being incorporated into a future iPhone saying, “The data we got came from somewhere.” It’s not surprising that Hard Candy took the risk, however, as the company won big with the September 2010 iPod touch, with their cases hitting the shelf the same week of release thanks to leaked designs.
Case manufacturers ramping up production early based on leaked case designs is nothing new, as Apple notoriously guards new product designs even from accessory makers prior to the public unveiling. Case-maker Speck CEO Irene Baran (a company Hickman previously worked for) explains:
“We listen to the rumors like everyone else does and make intelligent guesses,” she continued, Hickman is “known to take risky moves.”
Update: Hard Candy CEO Tim Hickman reached out on 9to5Mac to talk about the experience:
It was a good bet.. It wasn’t a huge amount of money and since we didn’t start early enough to make inventory … the bet is much less. In the meantime, our designers cranked out some awesome new stuff that we’re making for the 4S. Frankly we wouldn’t have come up with so much new designs if it wasn’t of this.. We love the strategy of trying to figure out what data is right, what designs will really work, what consumers want in regards to protecting a new phone.
We actually had pre-orders for over 2,000 of those babies… So I guess the designs were pretty good… We’ll wait!
You got to take risks and push the envelop. Isn’t that what Apple all about?

iPhone 5C First Impressions: An iPhone 5 With a Hard Candy Shell
When we got our hands on the iPhone 5C, our very first thought was that it feels like the iPhone 5 permanently ensconced in a case. That was also our next four or five thoughts. Because basically, that’s all the iPhone 5C is.
While the less expensive iPhone certainly doesn’t feel cheap, it’s obviously not the sleek, stylish iPhone you’re used to. Presumably if you’re buying one, though, you know that going in. And you may even prefer it.
What you might not know, though, is that the plastic polycarbonate shell is tapered along the edge of the screen, creating a gap that feels like a case you can’t take off. It left us wishing for more seamless, edge-to-edge display; presumably Apple opted not to go that route to keep the phone’s price down. It’s not so much annoying as it is mildly distracting.
The 5C is also noticeably heavier than the iPhone 5S (a little more than half an ounce), although it’s still so light (comparable to the Moto X) you’ll forget it’s in your pocket.
Setup was quick and easy, as you’d expect. The 5C was up and running on an iCloud backup in less than five minutes. It’s not at all shocking that it’s fast and responsive, because it has the same A6 processor as the iPhone 5.
In fact, using the 5C is essentially the same experience in almost every way as using an iPhone 5, aside from that hard candy shell. Audio calls were loud and clear, and FaceTime calls were sharp and crisp. Games were speedy, although if anyone has any tips on getting past level 77 of Candy Crush, they’re much appreciated.
The biggest difference in the experience of the iPhone 5C is iOS 7 . With a fresh, flat design, the new OS is vibrant and colorful, and it’s gained a ton of new useful functions. It’s polished and pretty (read our full review here) , but the only iPhone 5C-specific is that the wallpaper will match the color of the phone you bought out of the box.
iOS 7 Review: Pretty Is as Pretty Does
There’s little question that iOS 7 is the most transformative update to iOS in its six-year…
Overall, there aren’t any surprises with this phone, other than your own personal, entirely subjective feelings about the colors and feel of hard plastic. Just know that if you’re getting it because you want something different , what you’re actually getting is more of the same.

Hard Candy has a sweet tooth for iPhone 5s and 5c
Sponsored Links
Yes, you read the headline correctly. Hard Candy Cases has beaten Apple to the punch by sending out a press release for cases for products that don’t officially exist at this point. The company is jumping on the hopeful rumor bandwagon by pinging the tech press with word of these cases — which (conveniently for the manufacturer) aren’t available until October 2013.
The new HarvestCraft Slider for the iPhone 5s and 5c rings up the cash register at US$39.95. These colorful cases can be arrayed in three different combinations per harvest color. For the 5c — if it even actually exists — I’m wondering about the logic of hiding a supposedly colorful phone in another colorful case. And what about the alleged «champagne» iPhone 5s? Are you really going to want to cover that gorgeous light gold finish with a case?
In all fairness, it looks like many case manufacturers are jumping the gun. Just yesterday, we were given a link by an anonymous tipster who pointed out that Booq Bags had a page up touting the Complete Protection Kit for the iPhone 5C (note the capitalized «c»). The page is now down, but it showed a line of protective cases and screen protectors for the alleged colorful plastic iPhone. If an iPhone 5c or 5C or whatever the hell it’s called is actually announced on Tuesday, you can use that bookmarked link to order a case for your new phone.
More «jumping the gun» accessories for other unannounced products will be coming soon!
