Question: Q: ITunes tells me my IPhone doesn’t have enough memory for all the items in my iTunes library.
However, i had about a gigabyte (or so) free before I added only ten more songs to my library. Now, though, when I try to sync, I get the following message: The iPhone “John Masella’s iPhone” cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (additional 1.05 GB required). Initially, ITunes told me I needed about 3 gigabytes, but I deleted some pictures and apps. I don’t know what to do at this point, because I really have nothing else I can delete. If anyone could provide me with some assistance, I would be very appreciative.
Essentially, I have 3.74 GB free and am only syncing ten more songs to my phone, but ITunes tells me there is not enough memory.

I had this problem as well but solved it!
Basically, I had added about 20 songs to my iTunes library. I went to go and sync my iPhone to add them to the music already on my phone when iTunes told me my phone did not have enough capacity. I deleted photos/apps etc. until the sufficient amount of MB/GB was freed. Yet, it seemed that I still didn’t have enough space. I guessed the computer must have thought that I was adding my iTunes library on my Mac to the music already existing on my phone. So I freed up all the space on my phone (by just syncing one song onto the phone and hence removing the other 1000) and once that was done I went to sync the entire music library.
You need to remove all your music on the phone and then add it again!

The following article provides steps that can help resolve this issue by freeing up unnecessarily used space.

I have literally just had the same problem. iTunes was telling me that I was over capacity by 220GB :S I only has 200 songs haha.
I figured it out. I went through each song on my computer and found that one song that was 3 minutes long was apparently 220GB in size. So I deleted it from my computer and also deleted it from my itunes library and it worked 😝

Totally useless advice, plus the links don’t work. I dealt with the problem by deleting all my music. Why not just say that or do some actual research and give some personal and interactive advice? Wait, it’s probably because your company’s making tonnes of money and you know we’ll buy products regardless and thus couldn’t care less. I usually hate jobsworths, but this company should be full of them. Pathetic.

They’re a total joke. Delete all your music, mate and that should do it. If not, I actually apologise on their behalf. As useless as chocolate coffee pots.

I had a similar problem, and other answers allude to the kind of solution that works. What was rather annoying for me was that, by deleting a few apps, the iTunes display suggested I should have plenty of room. Furthermore, the error message included the bizarre phrase «the required space is 1.26MB but only 126MB is available»: yes, more space available than needed by a factor of 100!
What seems to be the case is that the sync does not necessarily remove everything you specify for removal before copying things on that you want on the device. Therefore, even if you have enough space for what you intend to have on your device at the end of the sync, it won’t help if the space is insufficient to copy at least some things on in the first place. So I actually solved the problem by deleting one of the apps on the iPhone, which was an app I was going to remove anyway. In general (on iOS 8), go to Settings | General | Usage | Storage then choose something you are happy to be without.

I couldn’t handle losing all my music data (play counts, etc) so I went into my iPhone on iTunes and from there limited what to sync into my iPhone (after deleting podcast data from settings on iPhone and seeing the size needed in the error message decrease) and then I was able to sync without issue. My iPhone shows 2+ GB of space available when I connected my iPhone and 4+ GB of space available after removing apps from the sync screen before trying to sync but was still telling me I was 900+ MB over capacity in the error message. It did complete the sync, but told me 200+ songs couldn’t sync. I just added back my entire library and iTunes is showing 5+ GB free for attempt 2.

I was getting the error message not enough storage on iphone as well. I downloaded icloud to my computer (previously only had on my phone), not sure why but after this downloaded I tried it again and successfully backed up my phone from itunes.

This is utterly insane. I had the same problem for weeks — supposedly not enough storage to sync even 1 new song, even when I deleted practically everything from my iPhone 6 (all photos and videos, and all the music except a shortish list of songs that would not delete except manually, individually, and did not show under «manage storage» in Settings, which no longer had music on the list!). The available storage in «Settings» showed more than 8 GB free at this point, but iTunes still claimed there was an overload of 500 MB or so.
What finally worked was UNCHECKING everything in the Playlists and Artists lists in iTunes under the «Sync Music» heading (with «Selected playlists . etc» selected at the top and «Sync only checked songs and videos» selected under «Summary», and the iPhone connected by USB — all of which may or may not be relevant). As soon as I UNCHECKED everything and clicked «Apply», iTunes synced all of my previous music to the iPhone. I then re-checked some (new and old) playlists and artists in iTunes, and those were immediately synced as well. iTunes now shows another 2.44 GB free, where there was supposedly an overload before. I may now have duplicates of some music, but that is better than being unable to sync any at all.
This has taken hours to solve. Why Apple has to be quite so user-unfriendly, and why it’s up to users to resolve all its issues, I’m at a loss to understand.

I tried to do that but it still doesn’t work for me and I have over 7GB of free space on my phone. So annoyed that I can’t figure out how to fix this!

Question: Q: Why are some songs greyed out on iTunes?
I have new Apple Music songs available on my iPhone but when I go to the songs in iTunes (12.2) they are greyed out and unplayable. Anyone else experiencing this, and any solutions?

Guys and gals, you may need to do the steps outlined below to get your music libraries in sync. I know it worked for me.
1) Log out of iTunes (Account > Sign Out)
3) Launch iTunes. Re-login to iTunes by going to the For You tab and logging in through Apple Music.
After you go through these steps, let the updating to your iCloud Music Library finalize (notice syncing loop in top right corner of iTunes window). It is then that you will see your album covers and tracks available for streaming through iTunes on your Mac.

For those of you who this did NOT fix the issue, after some poking, I found that numerous songs had an option at the verry bottom of the drop down menu (after right clicking) «check selection» or «uncheck selection». After clicking this option the song now shows up normally and allows it to be burned, added to playlists, etc. Hope it helps.

If you log back in and all your Apple Music tracks are gone, go to Preferences -> General and check the box for iTunes music library. I signed back in and mine got unchecked so I freaked out cause I thought I was going to have to remake my playlists but noticed it was still on my iPhone. Do this and your tracks will be back.

Same here, I followed the instructions and they are still greyed out. My matched Wall album by Pink Floyd has one album black text and one grey text.
I can play a track one by one by right clicking a grey track, but cannot just play the album — anyone seeing that?
I’m running OS X 10.10.4, iTunes 12.2.2.25

I’m in Australia, and I’ve tried all possible methods of logging out of my iTunes account on all my devices (iMac, MBP, iPad, iPhone), then rebooting all devices and signing back in. To no avail.
All of the greyed out tracks that I’m seeing align with «Album Only» tracks on the iTunes Music Store. i.e. Any track that cannot be purchased independently of the album, is not available to stream via Apple Music. Which means that in the short term — until these tracks are reinstated for streaming — Apple Music does not really live up to its promise for a lot of classic albums.
It is frustrating as a customer that, first, these things don’t get sorted out by the monolithic companies doing these deals, and, second, that we have to hunt on the web for explanations, wasting time and effort, when it would be so much easier for us — the customers — if the service providers gave us clear and obvious explanations directly within these services.
Please, Apple. Please, music companies. Look after us. We want to use your services, but you need to make it not frustrating if we’re going to stay with you!

I was surprised to see that some of my songs were unchecked. A real «duh» moment for me.

I think I have figured this out by accident, however if I am right it’s annoying and will drive users mad. So while trying to solve this I decided to build a playlist on my Mac and use it on my iPad, based on the fact that tracks remain greyed out on the mac. What I noticed was that some tracks actually did appear on the mac (iTunes 12.2) in the playlist and could be downloaded/played, but some remained greyed out. As a reference all appeared on the iPad/iphone and can be played.
So I looked up the new Florence and the Machine album (How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful — Deluxe) and saved it to my music. I picked this because it’s heavily featured on iTunes. And sure enough it appeared in ‘My Music’ (MacBookPro iTunes) with a previous Florence album I had purchased, and yes it can be downloaded and played in iTunes 12.2.
Next I found the newest Chicane album (The Sum of its Parts), I repeated the process and saved it to ‘My Music’. Yep it appears and plays in ‘My Music’ on the iPad/iPhone. I then checked in my MacBookPro iTunes 12.2, and sure enough it is greyed out and won’t download or play.
My conclusion is that there is either an issue with the updated iTunes 12.2 or there are licence issues with an awful lot of music out there preventing them working on iTunes 12.2 (desktop). All the music mentioned and everything I have moved from Spotify works on my iPhone and iPad, and I’m really pleased with it. Apple need to sort this because none of the other streaming services have this issue. If it’s not sorted by the time the trial is up, I’ll be going back to Spotify and that will really annoy me as the streaming integration with my own music is perfect and just what I wanted. Sad.

I know how important getting your music back on your iPhone is to you!
I would start with making sure both Apple Music and iCloud Music Library are turned on in Settings > Music, as both of those are needed to see all your music, not just Apple Music. Here is more info about how Apple Music and iCloud Music Library work.
Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities.

Hi Cessarion. or anyone with an answer. I have a similar issue.
I have an extensive music library, with many playlists built over the years — been ripping my own CDs since before first version of iTunes. I listen to a wide range of music, and much of it is NOT available on Apple Music, especially recordings of friend’s music, etc. I’ve created many playlists on my Mac, and sync my music through playlists (manual and «smart») to my iOS devices.
Issue #1: I subscribed to Apple Music in iOS 8 or 9 (before iCloud Music Library) and had the ability to download songs or albums to my device. Loading files to my iOS devices or to my Mac now requires iCloud Music Library. So i turned it on on my iPhone, which led to.
Issue #2: It appears that whatever tracks on my phone that are not available on Apple Music were erased from my phone. I was in shock: empty playlists!! I then made matters worse by connecting my phone to my Mac, thinking they would be restored. On the contrary, the playlists were then emptied on my Mac!! So much of my hard work of the years, gone!!
So, can someone please confirm that my logic is correct: turning on iCloud Music Library will remove tracks that are not avail on Apple Music (#2), and that there is no way to download (keep) a song/album for offline listening without enabling iCloud Music (#1)? Anyone know of a workaround for either issue?

Apple is a failure. This is the 3rd time all my music has been deleted. Either through updates or just plugging it into my new computer. But guess Apple didn’t think about people buying new computers. I hate this disgusting waste of trash company products. I’m switching to android.

I don’t use Apple music so turning it on is useless. All my music was downloaded directly to my phone so I don’t have to use wifi or data! This is the same reason I don’t use cloud music. Also the BIG question is WHY is my music getting deleted? It;s great that a solution is offered to fix the problem but now please offer an explanation as to what is causing this to happen. It is not the first time this has happened either. This is very frustrating.

THank you for your response. I did what you said and apparently it was going to work because when I entered Apple music app earlier today it said «Loading your music library» but didn’t do nothing and after 5 minutes it said «It has not been possible to load your library, please go to settings and turn on iCloud Music Library». I did it like 5 times and never worked, so I didn’t try it anymore. BUT. While I was replying to your answer I decided to look one more time and IT WORKED. All my songs, playlist and offline music is there. Jajajajajajajaja I’m complete again! Thank you so much for your help.

If your Apple Music repeatedly deletes your music and doesn’t let you download it- it may be because you have optimistic storage on which can be turned off and will solve this problem.

I have experienced a similar problem as Cesarion. I have no idea what caused it. I had Apple Music and iCloud Music Library turned on. On Monday night I was listening to music on my AppleTV. I added Rihanna’s Sledgehammer and Fall Out Boy’s Ghostbusters to My Music. On Tuesday I listened to a TWiT podcast on my iPhone 6. Then I went to listen to these 2 songs and I found a completely empty Music Library. I was very confused. I decided to listen to an audiobook in iBooks and found that it too was completely empty.
My phone had several gigs of music downloaded from my iCloud Music Library. There were some songs from Apple Music. However, there were very few songs I add to my iPhone from Apple Music. I usually just stream Apple Music.
When I got back home and reconnected to WiFi I turned off and then on the iCloud Music Library setting. When prompted to Merge or Replace I selected to Replace the library on my iPhone. I went back over to Music and it stated «Loading Library». Just like Cesarion it stopped with an error message that it was not possible to load my iCloud Library. I repeated this process several times with the same outcome everytime. I power cycled the iPhone and encountered the same outcome. I connected the iPhone to a power source and encountered the same outcome.
How do I reset the music library on the iPhone? I want my music back.
