The Economics of the iPhone
What Are the Economics of the iPhone?
It’s estimated that more than 900 million people in the world own an iPhone. From our culture to the economy, the small, handheld device has made a splash, changing the way we live, and that influence is likely to continue.
Apple Inc. (AAPL) unveiled the XR and XS in 2018, which was the company’s cheapest phones in recent years. Meanwhile, the iPhone X saw its international launch with a $999 price tag. In 2019, Apple unveiled its latest iPhone with the iPhone 11, which has a dual-camera lens and the iPhone 11 Pro along with its three camera lenses.
However, Apple’s greatest product has also been its greatest curse. The iPhone makes up approximately 50% of the company’s total revenue, meaning the company is at the whim of the mobile smartphone market. As a result, Apple has been busy creating ancillary services and products that complement the iPhone.
With all of the products and services intertwined, it’s made it challenging for investors to determine, just how much money Apple earns from iPhone sales.
Key Takeaways
- Sales from the iPhone make up more than 50% of Apple’s total revenue.
- Although it’s estimated that 900 million people own an iPhone worldwide, sales were down in 2019 versus 2018.
- Apple’s services and wearables businesses grew by 16% and 41% respectively, which indirectly adds new revenue streams for the iPhone.
Understanding How the iPhone Makes Money
Investors and analysts can not easily calculate how much profit Apple earns on each product. Apple, in the past, had reported unit sales for each product. However, the company has stopped that practice and instead, reports revenue by product. The table below contains the products and services revenues for the past three years. The data was pulled from the company’s 10K report on September 28, 2019.
- Apple reported $260 billion in revenue for the end of the company’s 2019 fiscal year–highlighted in green in the table below.
- The iPhone generated $142.3 billion in revenue in 2019, meaning the iPhone represented approximately 55% of the total revenue for the year.
- The iPhone revenue declined in 2019 by 14% versus 2018. However, revenue for 2017 was an 18% increase from the year prior.
Apple is one of the most valuable companies to date, yet more than 50% of its revenue depends on one product line.
Services and Wearables
Apple has been actively expanding its services business in recent years, which includes iTunes and Apple T.V. The company has also grown its wearables business such as the AirPods.
It’s important to consider that the company’s services and wearables business is an extension of the iPhone and other hardware products. To conclude that Apple had a poor year by only looking at the 14% decline (-$22 billion) in iPhone revenue for 2019 versus 2018 would not be a fair analysis.
The company also grew its services business by approximately $6.5 billion and wearables by $7.1 in the same period for a total of $13.6 billion. The $13.6 billion only partially offsets the $22 billion decline in iPhone revenue from 2018. However, the services and wearables businesses are growing at faster rates–16% and 41% respectively–versus the decline in iPhone sales of 14% from 2018. In other words, Apple is using the services and wearables business to fill the gap left from iPhone revenue declines.
The ancillary businesses would not be possible without the hardware products such as the iPhone, which makes determining the overall profitability for the iPhone that much more complex.
What Does it Cost to Build an iPhone?
Apple’s sourcing model is one of the reasons it generates attractive profit margins. The company makes very little of its own products. Instead, components and materials are gathered from around the globe and sometimes even from direct competitors, such as Samsung. This process significantly lowers capital expenses for Apple, saves the consumer a bit of money, and lets shareholders benefit from the difference.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max has a retail price of $1,099 per unit. It’s estimated that all of the components that make up the iPhone cost approximately $490.50 per phone, according to a report by NBC News. Some of the components include the Samsung battery unit, which costs $10.50, the triple camera costs $73.50, and while other equipment such as the processor, modem, and circuit boards cost approximately $159 per phone.
A $490 cost and a retail price of $1,099, Apple appears to be earning a $609 profit per phone. However, it’s difficult to determine the actual profit per unit since there are other cost factors that go into making the iPhone. The manufacturing, assembly, software, research, and development costs all must be paid for with the $609 profit per unit. There are also marketing and advertising costs as well as the cost of sales, general, and administrative costs such as the corporate office.
How the iPhone Helps the Economy
Apple took it upon itself to illustrate its effect on the economy and the job market. Apple reports that the company has created a «job footprint» of nearly 2.4 million jobs across the U.S.
According to Apple, most of the jobs created are in the app economy, which is:
«Currently responsible for 1.9 million American jobs—an increase of 325,000 in the last two and a half years.»
Apple also employs 90,000 workers in all 50 states and is planning to add 20,000 more jobs by 2023.

What You Need to Know About the True Cost of an iPhone
Choosing an iPhone and the Right Plan for You
Learning how much an iPhone costs isn’t as simple as checking Apple’s website for the listed price of the latest iPhone. That’s because the cost of buying an iPhone depends on several factors, and you need to account for the cost of the monthly service, which varies based on your plan. So, figuring out how much iPhone costs requires some math.
The Cost of the Latest iPhones
The first and most important factor in the cost of an iPhone is the phone itself. Prices vary based on which model you want and how much storage you prefer. In Apple’s iPhone line up, a new phone can be yours for anywhere from $49 (for a basic iPhone 8) to $1,449 (for the highest-end iPhone 11 Pro Max), depending on the model you want.
As of April 2020, the cost of a new iPhone from Apple looks like this:
Model | 64GB | 128GB | 256GB | 512GB |
---|---|---|---|---|
iPhone 11 Pro Max | $1099 | $1249 | $1449 | |
iPhone 11 Pro | $999 | $1149 | $1349 | |
iPhone 11 | $699 | $749 | $849 | |
iPhone XR | $599 | $649 | ||
iPhone SE (2nd Generation) | $399 | $449 | $549 | |
iPhone 8 Plus | $549 | $599 | ||
iPhone 8 | $449 | $499 |
These days, pretty much everyone pays the full price for their iPhone (more on why that is in the next section), so don’t expect major discounts. But you can choose to pay full price up front or to pay in monthly installments.
The major phone companies offer a monthly payment plan when you purchase a new iPhone from them. This offers a lower upfront cost, but you must stay with the carrier until the iPhone is paid for or else pay the balance due before you change to another carrier. Alternatively, if you want to buy your phone in installments, but not be stuck with a phone company, check out Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program.
The iPhone almost never goes on sale. You might find short-term discounts when new models are released, or around the holidays, but those are usually small savings. Apple doesn’t really put its products on sale, so don’t wait for one. Just buy what you want when you want it.
Carrier Subsidies Aren’t Going to Return
It used to be that iPhones cost much less—sometimes as little as $199—for the latest model because phone companies paid part of the cost of the phone to entice you to use their service. Not anymore. In recent years, the major phone companies have done away with subsidies that allow customers who sign a two-year contract to pay significantly less for their iPhones. It’s very unlikely that the subsidy system will return, so expect to pay full price for your iPhone from now on.
That said, when new iPhone models are released, major carriers including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon, will sometimes offer reductions in the cost for the latest iPhone if you trade in your older model iPhone.
Regional and Prepaid Carriers Sometimes Have Cheaper Prices
You can pay a little less than the sticker price for the iPhone—about $50 in most cases—if you buy it through one of the smaller, regional carriers that offer the phone in some parts of the U.S. These carriers don’t always have the latest models, have more-limited monthly plans, and their service tends to be focused specifically on smaller, rural areas, but they are a cost-saving option for some users.
Monthly Voice and Data Plans
You should factor in the monthly cost of the voice and data service provided by the phone company you choose when thinking about the cost of an iPhone.
Monthly iPhone plans typically include costs for data service, calling, texting, and other services. Expect to spend around $100 a month with major carriers for the services that most people use.
With prepaid carriers, plans are cheaper, generally running closer to half the price offered by the major carriers, but data connections are often slower or have their fastest speeds limited based on how much you use. With those companies, expect to spend closer to the $50 to $60 range for calling, texting, and data.
Other Costs
You don’t want to spend hundreds on a new iPhone and then toss it in your purse or pants pocket without a protective case. Plan to put a case on the iPhone as soon as you get it. Many protective cases cost around $40-$100.
The iPhone comes with Apple’s standard warranty, but you may want to extend that protection with an AppleCare+ extends warranty available directly from Apple. The price of AppleCare differs based on your model — expect to spend $100-$200 — for two additional years of coverage. If you buy your iPhone through Apple’s monthly iPhone Upgrade Program, AppleCare+ is included in the price.
Lots of other companies offer iPhone insurance, but we recommend against it.

Apple Statistics (2021)
Updated: October 29, 2021
Apple is one of the most influential and recognisable brands in the world, responsible for the rise of the smartphone with the iPhone. Valued at over $2 trillion in 2021, it is also the most valuable technology company in the world.
Originally known for desktop computers, Apple was one of the first companies to switch to the graphical user interface (GUI) and saw success with the first Macintosh. Steve Jobs, the founder and CEO, was one of technology’s first “rockstars”, able to sell hardware as more than a tool for work.
Jobs resigned from Apple in 1985 and the company saw a gradual decline over the 1990s, as it struggled to compete with Microsoft on software and Windows manufacturers on hardware sales.
In a last ditch effort to save the company, Apple acquired Jobs’ company NeXT and installed him as advisor and then CEO. He turned the company’s fortunes around, launching iTunes and iPod in 2001.
The iPhone saw Apple ascend to one of the most valuable companies in the world, with revenue increasing from $37.4 billion in 2008 to $65 billion in 2010.
The success of the iPhone enabled Apple to launch new product categories, such as the iPad. Apple envisioned the tablet as a bridge between the smartphone and laptop, with the capabilities to be both.

As iPhone revenues have stagnated, Apple has looked for new ways to generate revenue from the iPhone. It launched Apple Watch in 2015, as an accessory to the iPhone which tracks various health and fitness metrics. AirPods were next, which paved the way for wireless headphones to become mainstream.
It has also built out its subscription services to include music and video streaming, video games, fitness and cloud storage. This segment alone generated $53 billion revenue in 2020, making it Apple’s second largest segment.
All eyes are on Apple’s next products, which may include a virtual reality headset and self-driving car. The past few product launches have been smaller in scope, like the HomePod and AirPod, and Apple fans are clamouring for the next iPhone.
Note: Apple’s financial year runs from September to September. What most consider Q3, is Apple’s Q4.
Apple key statistics
- Apple generated $365 billion revenue in 2020, 52% came from iPhone.
- Apple’s Services was the second largest division, responsible for 18% of sales
- 194 million iPhones, 71 million iPads and 20 million Mac and MacBook units were sold in 2020

- Apple Music has 72 million subscribers, Apple TV+ has over 40 million
Apple statistics
Since 2018, Apple has split its business into five segments: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Services and Wearable, Home and Accessories. The iPhone generates the majority of Apple’s revenue, but Services and Wearable, Home and Accessories have both seen increased priority in the past few years, as Apple tries to find new ways to prevent revenue stagnation.
Apple revenue
Apple revenue increased dramatically between 2009 to 2012, from $42.7 to $156.3 billion. During that period, Apple vastly increased its manufacturing volume through its partner Foxconn, which enabled global iPhone sales. It also saw the launch of the iPad, which added $19.1 billion revenue in the first year of sales.

Apple revenue by product
iPhone continues to be the main revenue generator, but its percentage has decreased in the past five years. Apple’s other hardware, which includes Watch, AirPods, HomePod and Beats, has become a priority category for Apple, as a way to add more revenue to a single iPhone purchase. Services have also seen significant growth in the past five years.
iPhone statistics
iPhone is Apple’s most valuable product and has, since 2008, been its main source of revenue. Even though Apple has diversified its product line with Watch, AirPods and services, iPhone is still responsible for 50 percent of Apple’s revenue.
In the past two years, Apple has launched four models of iPhone. These are: iPhone, Mini, Pro and Max. All come with different price points and are aimed at targeting as many consumers as possible.
iPhone revenue
Apple saw double-digit year-on-year iPhone growth from 2008 to 2015, but revenue has stagnated since. Apple has added new models, such as the Mini, Pro and Max in the past two years, although that hasn’t drawn in more customers. More customers are also holding onto their phone for longer, with Apple providing software upgrades for longer than two years.

Apple Services statistics
An increasingly important part of Apple, as it continues to add more subscriptions and services to its iOS platform. With iPhone and iPad sales not likely to see much significant movement, Apple sees services as a way to continue growing.
It should be noted that Apple rarely publicises usage or subscribers for certain apps, like iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime and Health, which is why we have not included them in this data report.

Apple Pay transaction volume
Apple Pay transaction volume more than doubled between 2018 and 2019, as more customers became comfortable using their phone to pay for things. While Apple has not revealed transaction volume for 2020, we suspect it will be lower than 2019 due to COVID-19.

2017 | 1.8 billion |
2018 | 6.6 billion |
2019 | 15 billion |
Apple Music subscribers

Apple News users
Apple’s news aggregation service may not responsible for much revenue generation – for Apple or news providers – but it has added more readers every year since launch. It is still behind Flipboard, with 145 million MAUs, but may surpass it by 2022.
Apple News+ added 200,000 subscribers in the first 48 hours, but has not made any significant strides since launch.

2019 | 100 million |

Siri active users
Apple’s Siri has been the unfortunate brunt of many jokes about artificial intelligence and smart assistants, however hundreds of millions of iPhone users actively use the application.

2017 | 375 million |

Note: Apple has used the terms ‘active users’ and ‘active devices’, so we are unsure which is correct. It may be that many of the ‘active’ users have only enabled Siri on their device, but do not regularly use it.
Siri accuracy
Apple has improved the accuracy of its smart assistant year-on-year, according to Loup Ventures, which run yearly tests on all of the major mobile smart assistants. While still behind Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, Siri is catching up.

2020 | 87 |

Apple Arcade subscribers
Apple’s mobile gaming subscription platform has seen some interest, however Apple has reportedly changed course and will not publish as many exclusive games as it planned. This may be perceived as Apple not meeting subscription targets after one year.
