How to Add the Pinyin Chinese Keyboard on an iPhone

The iPhone comes pre-installed with a number of different keyboard options. Many of the most commonly used languages in the world are included among the default keyboards, and the Chinese Pinyin keyboard is among these options.

Adding the Pinyin keyboard will not require you to purchase or install anything additional, and can actually be added to the iPhone keyboard with just a few simple steps. So follow our guide below to add the keyboard and start using it right now.

Adding a Chinese Keyboard to an iPhone in iOS 8

The steps in this article were written using an iPhone 6 Plus, in iOS 8. Steps may vary slightly for other versions of iOS, but are very similar.

Step 1: Open the Settings menu.

Step 2: Scroll down and select the General option.

Step 3: Scroll down and select the Keyboard option.

Step 4: Touch the Keyboards button at the top of the screen.

Step 5: Tap the Add New Keyboard button at the middle of the screen.

Step 6: Scroll down and select the Chinese (Simplified) option.

Step 7: Select whichever of the different options you prefer, then tap the Done button at the top-right corner of the screen. I am selecting the Pinyin – QWERTY option in the image below.

Now when you open up an app that uses the keyboard, such as Messages, there will be a globe icon at the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Tap and hold the globe button, then select the Chinese keyboard option to switch to it. This will remain the active keyboard until you switch back to another keyboard that you have installed

This same method can be used to add other keyboards as well. For example, many people eventually decide to have the emoji keyboard on their iPhone so they can send smiley faces and other similar types of icons. How to use Chinese handwriting recognition on the iPhone/iPad

For iPhone / iPad users learning Chinese, it is possible to enter characters simply by writing them on the screen. You don’t even have to write them exactly right, even if you get the stroke order wrong or it doesn’t look pretty, the software can usually recognise what you write – and if you use this method to enter characters into a dictionary app like Pleco or a dictionary website like nciku, then it makes looking up characters much much easier than using a regular dictionary.

Some apps have their own handwriting recognition functions, but to get you started you can try the built in system you already have first.

Here’s how to get started writing characters into your iPhone or iPad:

Click on the Settings icon on the main screen, then click General, then Keyboard, then click on Keyboards

You will see a list of all the keyboards you currently have selected for use. Click Add New Keyboard

If you are learning simplified Chinese, then click on Chinese (Simplified), or if you want to enter traditional Chinese characters, then click on Chinese (Traditional). You will then see a list of the input methods, for the Chinese handwriting recognition, click Handwriting. You can also switch on the Pinyin input method by clicking on Pinyin – QWERTY. The Chinese input method should now be switched on.

Now you can go to any dictionary app or any app where you want to enter text. Click on the globe icon on the keyboard and slide up to where it says 简体手写 (in the case of simplified Chinese handwriting recognition) or the corresponding name of the keyboard.

Then go ahead and write a Chinese character on the screen in the box at the bottom. You will see some options of characters to enter appear, click on the right character that you want to enter. When you are done with typing Chinese, you can click on the globe bottom at the bottom of the keyboard again to switch the keyboard back to another language.

On your computer, you’ll first activate the onscreen keyboard to work with. You’ll only be using your mouse or touchpad/pointer for this keyboard. Then, you’ll need to change the language setting to Chinese, so all text will appear in Chinese. You could also opt to use online keyboards instead. Read on for the links!

3. How to Activate an Onscreen Keyboard on Your Computer

1- Mac

1. Go to System Preferences > Keyboard.

2. Check the option “Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in Menu Bar.”

3. You’ll see a new icon on the right side of the main bar; click on it and select “Show Keyboard Viewer.”

2- Windows

1. Go to Start > Settings > Easy Access > Keyboard.

2. Turn on the option for “Onscreen Keyboard.”

3- Online Keyboards

If you don’t want to activate your computer’s onscreen keyboard, you also have the option to use online keyboards. Here are some good options:

4. How to Change the Language Settings to Chinese on Your Computer

Now that you’re all set to work with an onscreen keyboard on your computer, it’s time to download the Chinese language pack for your operating system of choice:

• Windows 8 (and higher)
• Windows 7
• Mac (OS X and higher)

1- Windows 8 (and higher)

1. Go to “Settings” > “Change PC Settings” > “Time & Language” > “Region & Language.”
2. Click on “Add a Language” and select “Chinese (Simplified, China).” This will add it to your list of languages. It will appear as 中文 (中华人民共和国) with the note “language pack available.”
3. Click on “中文(中华人民共和国)” > “Options” > “Download.” It’ll take a few minutes to download and install the language pack.
4. As a keyboard layout, you’ll only need the one marked as “Chinese – 中文.” You can ignore other keyboard layouts.
   1. To switch to Traditional Chinese: Click on 中文(中华人民共和国) > “Options” > “Microsoft Pinyin” > “Options” > “General” > “Choose a character set” > then choose “Traditional Chinese”.

2- Windows 7

1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region.
