What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Use these steps to transfer information to your new device, then remove your personal information from your old device.
Before you sell, give away, or trade in your device, you should first transfer information to your new device, then remove your personal information from your old device.
You shouldn’t manually delete your contacts, calendars, reminders, documents, photos, or any other iCloud information while you’re signed in to iCloud with your Apple ID. This would delete your content from the iCloud servers and any of your devices signed in to iCloud.
If you still have your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Follow these steps to transfer information to your new device, then remove your personal information from your old device.
Transfer information to your new device
If you have a new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can use Quick Start to automatically transfer information from your old device to your new device if you’re using iOS 11 or later. Use iCloud, iTunes, or the Finder to transfer information to your new device if you’re using iOS 10 or earlier.
If your phone number will change with your new device, add additional trusted phone numbers to your account to ensure you don’t lose access. If you no longer have access to your old phone number, you can generate a two-factor authentication code on your old device if needed.
Remove your personal information from your old device
- If you paired an Apple Watch with your iPhone, unpair your Apple Watch.
- Back up your device.
- Sign out of iCloud and the iTunes & App Store.
- If you’re using iOS 10.3 or later, tap Settings > [your name]. Scroll down and tap Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password and tap Turn Off.
- If you’re using iOS 10.2 or earlier, tap Settings > iCloud > Sign Out. Tap Sign Out again, then tap Delete from My [device] and enter your Apple ID password. Then go to Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID > Sign Out.
- If you’re switching to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage.
- Go back to Settings and tap General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings. If you turned on Find My [device], you might need to enter your Apple ID and password. If your device uses eSIM, choose the option to erase your device and the eSIM profile when asked.
- If asked for your device passcode or Restrictions passcode, enter it. Then tap Erase [device].
- Contact your carrier for help transferring service to a new owner. If you aren’t using a SIM card with your device, you can contact them to get help transferring service to the new owner.
- Remove your old device from your list of trusted devices.
When you erase your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, Find My [device] and Activation Lock are turned off.
If you no longer have your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the steps above weren’t completed and you no longer have your device, use these steps:
- Ask the new owner to erase all content and settings using the above steps.
- If you’re using iCloud and Find My [device] on the device, sign in to iCloud.com/find or the Find My app on another device, select the device, and click Erase. After the device has been erased, click Remove from Account.
- If you can’t follow either of the above steps, change your Apple ID password. This won’t remove personal information that’s stored on your old device, but it prevents the new owner from deleting your information from iCloud.
- If you’re switching to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage.
- If you’re using Apple Pay, you can remove your credit or debit cards at iCloud.com. Choose Account Settings to see which devices are using Apple Pay, then click the device. Next to Apple Pay, click Remove.
- Remove your old device from your list of trusted devices.
If you’re trading in an Android device to Apple
Before you send in an Android device to Apple as a trade-in, be sure to do the following:
- Back up your data.
- Erase the device.
- Remove any SIM cards, memory cards, cases, and screen protectors.
Contact your device’s manufacturer if you need help.
Learn more
- Make a backup of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch or restore from a backup.
- Remove all of your cards from Apple Pay.
- Get help if your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen.
- Learn about Activation Lock.
- No matter the model or condition, we can turn your device into something good for you and good for the planet. Learn how to trade in or recycle your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Apple Trade In.
When you tap Erase All Content and Settings, it completely erases your device, including any credit or debit cards you added for Apple Pay and any photos, contacts, music, or apps. It will also turn off iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Game Center, and other services. Your content won’t be deleted from iCloud when you erase your device.

Judge in Fortnite case loosens Apple’s control over App Store

A US judge on Friday ruled in a major antitrust lawsuit against Apple’s App Store, striking down some of Apple’s restrictions on how developers can collect payments from users.
The ruling came as part of a lawsuit brought by Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite. Epic accused Apple of running its App Store as a monopoly, exercising too much power over what apps are allowed and how they are run. It took aim at Apple’s in-app purchase policies, under which it charges developers up to 30% commission on profits.
Friday’s ruling strikes down a core part of Apple’s App Store rules, which prohibit developers from telling users about other places they can go to pay the developer directly rather than using Apple’s payment mechanisms.
Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers issued a nationwide order that allows developers to put into their apps “buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms”.
The ruling also said that Apple cannot ban developers from communicating with customers via contact information that the developers obtained when customers signed up within the app.
Gonzalez Rogers stopped short of granting Epic some of its other wishes, such as forcing Apple to open the iPhone up to third-party app stores.
The judge ruled Epic failed to demonstrate Apple is an illegal monopolist, but did show the smartphone giant engaged in “anticompetitive conduct” under California laws.
“A remedy to eliminate those provisions is appropriate,” the court ruling read. “This measured remedy will increase competition, increase transparency, increase consumer choice and information while preserving Apple’s iOS ecosystem which has procompetitive justifications.”
Epic made clear on Friday that while key components of the case were ruled in its favor, it does not consider the decision a win, and that it plans to appeal.
“Today’s ruling isn’t a win for developers or for consumers,” chief executive Tim Sweeney said on Twitter. “Epic is fighting for fair competition among in-app payment methods and app stores for a billion consumers.”
The feud between Apple and Epic Games intensified last August when Epic tried to bypass Apple’s App Store commission by launching its own payment system within its wildly popular game Fortnite. Apple responded by pulling the Fortnite game from the App Store.
Epic Games sued, and Friday’s ruling comes after a three-week trial in May before the US district court for the northern district of California. The trial saw Epic Games call Sweeney to testify as well as the Apple chief executive, Tim Cook.
Cook in his highly anticipated testimony justified the way the App Store is run by appealing to user safety and privacy, arguing that Apple must thoroughly vet which apps are allowed on its platform.
The App Store is a major contributor to the profit growth that has helped give Apple its current market value of nearly $2.5tn, but how much the sector makes remained a heated point of contention during the trial.
Apple shares moved down about 3.3% on news of the decision. Shares of Google’s owner, Alphabet, which operates an app store for Android smartphones, reversed an earlier gain and were last down nearly 2%. Analysts at Wedbush Securities, a US investment firm, said the decision could cost Apple $11bn in revenue over the next two years.
Apple said in a statement: “As the court recognized, success is not illegal. Apple faces rigorous competition in every segment in which we do business, and we believe customers and developers choose us because our products and services are the best in the world.”
The orders are similar to a move that Apple made last week to conclude an investigation by the Japan Fair Trade Commission in which Apple said it would allow “reader” apps such as Netflix to provide a link to customers to sign up for a paid account outside of the app, skipping Apple’s commission.
Geoffrey Manne, president of the US-based International Center for Law and Economics, an academic research body, said the ruling was not a resounding victory for Epic given that Apple had won on nine out of 10 counts, but it paved the way for further legal problems for the iPhone maker such as class action lawsuits. “The language in the ruling is not good for Apple. There are a lot of findings in this case that are going to open the door to further litigation.”
Manne added that the ruling could have been much worse for Apple. It left untouched the 30% cut and did not require Apple to allow alternative payment methods in its App Store.
This article and headline were amended on 10 September to clarify the specifics of the ruling regarding app users’ payment process.

Judge Says Apple Has Until December 9 to Make App Store Change Letting Developers Link to Alternate Payment Methods
Following a virtual hearing earlier today, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers has denied Apple’s request to delay the implementation of a permanent injunction that will require Apple to make significant App Store changes.
As part of the judgement in the Apple v. Epic lawsuit, Judge Gonzalez Rogers is requiring Apple to allow developers to add in-app links to outside websites, paving the way for alternate payment options that do not require developers to use the in-app purchase system.
In the original ruling, Apple was given 90 days to implement the changes. Apple in October filed a request asking for more time, and the Cupertino company ultimately wanted to wait to implement any new App Store features until all appeals in the Epic v. Apple lawsuit have concluded.
Apple’s request was denied and judge is not providing Apple with any additional time to add the requested App Store functionality, so the changes will need to be made by December 9. Based on the wording of the initial ruling, Apple will be prohibited from restricting developers from including «in their apps and their metadata buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms.»
Judge Gonzalez Rogers’ said that Apple wanted «an open-ended stay with no requirement that it make an effort to comply,» and that there are «multiple avenues» for Apple to comply with the injunction while protecting users.
The Court can envision numerous avenues for Apple to comply with the injunction and yet take steps to protect users, to the extent that Apple genuinely believes that external links would create issues. The Court is not convinced, but nor is it here to micromanage. Consumers are quite used to linking from an app to a web browser. Other than, perhaps, needing time to establish Guidelines, Apple has provided no credible reason for the Court to believe that the injunction would cause the professed devastation. Links can be tested by App Review. Users can open browsers and retype links to the same effect; it is merely inconvenient, which then, only works to the advantage of Apple.
Gonzalez Rogers also said that app developers should be able to choose to use the in-app purchase system or another system. «Consumer information, transparency, and consumer choice is in the interest of the public,» she wrote.
Apple attempted to argue that making changes to the App Store rules could «upset the careful balance between developers and customers provided by the App Store,» resulting in irreparable harm to Apple and consumers, but that argument was not successful. Apple was also not successful in its argument that it needed more time to work through «the complex and rapidly evolving legal, technological, and economic issues» that the required change would cause.
Apple told The Verge that it will appeal to the Ninth Circuit for a stay after being denied by Judge Gonzalez Rogers. «Apple believes no additional business changes should be required to take effect until all appeals in this case are resolved. We intend to ask the Ninth Circuit for a stay based on these circumstances,» the spokesperson said.
Along with the request to stay the injunction, Apple in October filed an appeal against the ruling that is requiring it to change the App Store rules, but that appeal may not be able to play out before the December 9 deadline.

Apple
Hi, I would like to cancel my purchase of Civilization: Beyond Earth, v1.0.5 (12+) and ask for a refund. The problem is that my Mac is probably too old to run the app smoothly, even on the lowest graphic settings. The app has been already removed from my computer. Thanks in advance, Ilya.
Thanks for choosing Apple.

Thank you very much for your reply.
I do feel disappointed with the decision to deny the refund for the application, which really runs awfully on my Mac.
I do not feel that there are clear requirements to deny the refund in such conditions, as previously I was given the refund in the very likewise case (you can check the follow-up case 242971661), and I was very grateful for the customer support specialists (Drea and Bernadette), who assisted me with the problem, and not just deny it.
I would like to ask you to review the issue once again, and/or consult with the senior manager on the case. Otherwise, I would like to get clear explanations, why different decisions are made in the likewise cases.
Thanks for your support, Ilya
Thanks so much for your reply. I definitely understand how it can be a little confusing when you have received refunds in the past and would be happy to help explain a bit about our policies.
When purchasing content from the iTunes Store, all sales are final per our terms and conditions. We do understand that mistakes can happen and I am very happy to know that we were able to issue exceptions for you in the past. I believe this information which Bernadette sent over previously, may be helpful to keep handy when shopping for programs to use on your Mac:
To avoid this in the future, it is best to review the app’s details under «Description.» It provides information about the item’s compatibility, size, and other details. You can also see customer’s comments under «Rating and Reviews.» This will help you review an app and other items offered in iTunes Store before purchasing it.
You can see our iTunes Store Terms of Sale here:
I do want to recommend reaching out to the app developer at the link below, to find out if there may be some settings that you can choose to allow the program to run more seamlessly on your mac: http://support.aspyr.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?utm_source=MacApp&utm_medium=SupportLink&utm_campaign=civilization-beyond-earth
Kindest Regards, Lora
I just wanted to share, how disappointing it is when you buy a product, which you cannot use. From my purchasing history you can see that I frequently buy different applications, and only in rare cases do I ask for a refund. It used to be of a great meaning to me that once I could not run the app properly, there was always an option to ask for a refund. Before buying this app, I checked if I could run it at the GameAgent website, and that was the result:
However, the app ran really badly, I got tired soon and could not continue playing.
I would like to ask you, Lora, to consult with your senior staff about my case, and see if there is an opportunity to give me the refund, just to enhance my good attitude toward your company.
Thanks for the support, Ilya
Thanks for choosing Apple.
Thanks so much for your reply. I hope that your week is going well! What I can do for you is refund this purchase, however please be aware that all purchases are final in the Mac App store and with iTunes purchases.
With this being said, I am happy to make a final exception for you, however please be sure to review system requirements in the future prior to downloading any content. Your refund is going to be 2,990.00 RUB back to the credit card used within 10 business days.
