Buy books on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac

1. Open the Books app.
2. Tap or click Book Store.
3. Browse for a book, or search for a specific one. When you find a book that you’re interested in, tap or click it.
4. To buy a book, tap or click the price.
5. The book appears in your library in the Books app.

Read books

Organize your library

In the Books app, you can find all the books, book series, PDFs, and audiobooks that you purchased from the Book Store or Audiobook Store or manually added to your device.

Sort your books

1. Open the Books app.
2. On your iPhone or iPad, tap Library. Or on your Mac, click All under Library.
3. Tap or click Manually.
   
4. Choose a sort option, such as Title, Author, or Recent. Don’t see Sort Manually on your iPhone or iPad? Just swipe down on your screen, then the Sort Manually option appears.

See your books as a list

To see your books as a list instead of a grid:

• On your iPhone or iPad, tap the List View button .
• Or on your Mac, click View > View As from the menu bar, then click List View.

If you don’t see a book in your library

If you don’t see a book in your library:

• Turn on iCloud on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Go to Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, then turn on both iCloud Drive and Books. Then go to Settings > Books. Under Syncing, turn on iCloud Drive.
• Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or update your Mac.
• If you previously deleted the book, redownload the book.
• If you previously hid a book, unhide the book.

• You can listen to audiobooks in the Books app on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac. Or use iTunes on a PC.
• You can save copies of PDFs from emails and webpages into the Books app.
• You can also add DRM-free EPUB file format books, books that you create with Pages, MP3 audiobooks, AAC audiobooks, and Audible.com audiobooks to your library.

Publish and sell books with iBooks Author

Use iBooks Author to create and submit books to Apple Books or distribute anywhere on the web.

Book creation is moving to Pages, and iBooks Author is no longer available to new users. iBooks Author can still be used on macOS 10.15 and earlier, but there will be no new updates.

iBooks Author is a free app available in the App Store on your Mac that you can use to create and publish ebooks. Using the tools in the app, you can add artwork and metadata to a book. You can also export EPUB files that you created in a different program to iBooks Author, and then sell them on Apple Books or distribute them for free.

To publish your book from iBooks Author, you must first export it as a PDF, text file, EPUB, or .ibooks file. To choose the best format for your book, first decide how you plan to distribute it.

Publish your book on the Book Store

You can create a book in iBooks Author in EPUB (.epub) or iBooks (.ibooks) format and publish your work to the Book Store in Apple Books.

To sign up to sell your books on the Book Store, set up iTunes Connect for Apple Books. You can publish to Apple Books with Pages, iTunes Producer, or our web publishing portal. Learn more about Apple Books for Authors. You can also make books available for free on the Book Store.

Publish your book for an iTunes U course

To submit your work for publication on iTunes U, save it as an .ibooks or EPUB file.

To publish your book on iTunes U, you must have an iTunes U site. If you don’t have an iTunes U site, you can apply for one.

Distribute your books on the web

You can distribute works that you create with iBooks Author on the web as a standalone purchase or subscription product or service. When you sell your book on the web, you must use a format other than .ibooks, such as PDF or EPUB. If you want to sell your work in .ibooks format, you can sell it only through the Book Store in Apple Books. When you provide a work for free, you can distribute it in any format (including .ibooks) through the Book Store or by other means.

About copyright

You retain all of your rights in the content of the work that you create in iBooks Author. If you distribute your work in .ibooks format, it’s subject to the distribution restrictions described above.

At the moment you can’t — they can only be read in the iBooks app on an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, so far Apple hasn’t made a Mac or PC reader for them

To read purchased ebooks on your Air you will need to get them from one of the services which has an app for OS X, like Kindle, Nook, Kobo, or Googlebooks.

Wish I’d found this before I spent a whole darn day trying to figure out how to open the ibooks on my macbook air, that my husband purchased on his ipad!😠

How pathetic . come on Apple. this a basic thing! The whole point of ‘Apple-ing’ is to be able to share and sync with other Apple devices that one owns and has authorized. This is a major oversight. I’m off to Amazon. the books are often cheaper too!

When I moved from PC’s to Macs some years ago, it was because Mac just worked. Now it appears we have to read the small print for what Apple has not told us. I am now really tired of the number of things I can’t do on my Mac. Not being able to read ebooks downloaded via iTunes is one of them. Good grief, I created a Windows Live account today to allow me to store and access documents from any computer. I can even use my Mobileme email address to do this. Sadly Apple don’t provide this facility any more.

You can at least run Windows on your Mac:

And unlike 6 years ago, that’s been possible at native speeds ever since. All you need is a Mac with an Intel processor for native speeds.

One of the good things about the MacBook Air (especially 11.6″) is its portability — much like an iPad, iPhone, or reading tablet. This makes it ideal for the iBook. So it’s ironic that, despite Apple Inc’s marketing of the amazingly thin and portable MBA, they do not make the iBook app available in the App Store for Mac.

As Apple gets bigger, its corporate greed culture becomes more apparent. How tragic that it’s doomed to being the victim of a future more nimble upstart that’s counter-corporate greed and pro-‘just make it cool and seamless’ (just like Apple was).

iPad books are supposed to use the ePub format, for which there’s definitely OS X readers for. However, I’ve never bought an iPad book before so I don’t know the specifics.

What’s more, you can follow this tutorial about How to transfer and copy ePub books from iPad to Mac.

You are a little confused, there is no such thing as «iPad books». You can get ebooks from the iBookstore or from another source. Books from the iBookstore can be .epub format or .ibooks format, and can either have or not have DRM protection. Books with DRM protection can only be read on an iOS device with the iBooks app, and .ibooks format can only be read on an iPad.

eBooks from other sources would normally be read on the free ereaders provided by the source, e.g. Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Googlebooks, which are available for both iOS and OS X devices.

The entire situation with iBooks not being available on my Mac computers has me using Kindle and Amazon forever.

I have never been so disgusted with Apple’s proprietary ways, and am actually contemplating buying other computers and devices from here on in.

It’s astonishing how incredible obtuse most commenters are here.

There are 3 very good reasons Apple has not constructed an iReader for their computers.

Let’s all gather around and listen to some wisdom.

First, who wants to sit with a computer as a book for hours on end? Yes, computers are supposed to be on and usable and portable and blah blah blah but lets get real. One purchases an item to be used for what they were invented for. Yes, it’d be fun to be able to catch a few pages on your favorite book once in a while on your computer, but be honest. Would you really want to kill your Mac screen and battery over time just because you’re reading books on it?

I have owned 61 Macintosh products since 1984 and most of them did what they were supposed to do very well. An iPad as a reader is a killer machine. This is reason two;

Oh no, you’ve caught Apple being an actual money making company that wants to take advantage of the fact that reading a book on an iPad is overall a much preferred action over doing it on a Macbook

Are you all really this stupid?

Reason number three.

If you own a Macbook anything you probably already have an iPhone. This gets you more involved with your iPhone and makes it something you appreciate more. You can make calls, listen to music, text, take notes and read books. It’s a killer device.

Don’t try and make the Macbook do something it isn’t designed to do. the screens are not interactive for book reading, it’s a stupid notion to say the least.

And that’s the thing. Smart smart smart people work at Apple and know that it just would be used that much in the long run.

Quit whining about technology.

When I hear you idiotic kids whine about your tech devices not having this or that I laugh my head off and then think of my rotary dial phone I had as a kid. I never complained that someone’s line was busy. I never complained when my sister was on the phone. I was just thankful that I was in a household that had a phone and once in a while I’d get to use it.

Get over yourselves and realize what you have.
