Block Image|Video is an addon that lets you easily block or hide desired items (image, video, etc.) with just one click.

Once you add this addon to your Firefox, a button will appear in the toolbar. This button shows that the addon is active (with a red color). Now, before using the addon, please visit the options page and choose a desired item(s) to block or hide (i.e. image).

By default, NO item is selected. Please note that, if you choose to — hide — items, the addon lets these items to be loaded in the browser, but, will make them invisible. On the other hand, if you choose to – block — any item, the addon prevents that specific item from loading into your browser. This way, loading the web-pages may become faster but you cannot make images to become visible again (if the addon is turned off).

Note 1: before using the addon, please visit the options page and adjust the item(s) you want to block or hide.

Note 2: to report bugs, please visit the addon homepage and fill the bug report form.

Image Block от Hemant Vats

Image Block adds a toggle button that conditionally blocks/allows loading of images on webpages. Blocking images results in faster browsing, especially helpful on handheld devices or slower connections.

Updated to work with newer versions! This version had to be completely re-written as the new APIs are much more restrictive.

Description of earlier version below —

This addon first showed up in 2007 for Firefox version 1.5. Since then its has tried to support all Firefox versions (absolute legacy support), even if it meant compromising on some features (e.g. toolbar button, which is finally movable now). The last thing I wanted was for a user to change there installation just for Image Block to work.

Another key issue that everyone kept pointing (other than the immovable button) was images not being blocked on certain sites (e.g. Google Image search). This was done on purpose, as these images are embedded in data, «blocking» them was not possible. They could only be «hidden», which would not help in faster browsing or less data use. However, I have finally added this (I’m still not fully convinced if this is the way to go).

Then there were (are) the endless demands of black-lists, white-lists, conditional blocking, flash, tab specific, auto reload, blocking content other than images. so on and so forth. Well, I don’t plan to do any of that. The whole idea is to keep it simple, so that everyone can use it. even my mom! Its easy to make tons of buttons and give every feature possible to the user, but making everything work with a single button sets the user free. Most human beings like simple tools!

Last version was released for Firefox 3.5, it worked till now without any changes to code.

Below is the original description (last edited in 2010!)

Image Block adds a toggle button that conditionally blocks/allows loading of images on webpages. The toggle button is added to the navigation toolbar (extreme right) by default. Blocking images results in faster browsing, especially helpful on handheld devices or slower connections like GSM/GPRS/EDGE dial-up etc.

Recently in a review one user (thanks dellvin!) pointed out that Image Block is quite useful when you visit websites which show dirty and adult advertisements, while also containing useful information. If you are not sure of what you are about to see on a webpage, just block images to avoid possible embarrassment.

It can also be used at work where your boss doesn’t allow you to surf the web or social networking websites!! They look very different (hard to see which site you are viewing) with image blocking on.

— Version 2.1 fixes a couple of bugs, adds tooltip and french language ( thanks to Vincent Caron for this update).
— Version 2.0 fixes compatibility issues with Firefox 3.5, it also adds the button to the navigation toolbar by default.

Very simple image blocking extension, hopefully useful!

This is my the first extension, I always try to «Keep It Simple, Stupid»

Version 3.0:
-The toolbar button can now be moved or removed completely
-Added support for blocking embedded data images
-Added more languages (de-DE, en-GB, en-US, es-ES, fr-FR, id-ID, it-IT, ja-JP, ko-KO, nl-NL, pl-PL, pt-BR, ru-RU, th-TH, vi-VI, zh-CN, zh-TW)

Version 2.1:
This update is made possible by the efforts of Vincent CARON
All issues / bugs mentioned in the reviews have been fixed for now.

Version 2.0:
I’m sorry for a long delayed update, I appreciate the interest shown by all the users (especially people who wrote to me, if it was not for you guys I would have never updated this addon!)

PS: If something doesn’t work for you, please write me a mail instead of just writing a bad review (not that I really care!) A review doesn’t give me any information to solve your problem

How do I turn off image loading in Firefox for Android?

Chosen solution

hello mjray, try this: enter about:config into the address bar, search for the preference named permissions.default.image, edit it and change its value to 2. (1 allows all images to load, 2 blocks all images, 3 allows only images from the same site to load and blocks third-party-images).

Thank you, that works. I found an add-on which adds Bilder Laden / Bilder Deaktiviert to the menu, which seems to change the same option. It would be useful to have this and scripts on/off easily accessible, to help cut data quota use/cost.

For every browser, there exist Extension AdBlock (also, there exists Adblock Plus) : For Firefox — https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/

and click Save. after this, the images+flash files wont be loaded on sites, but if you want to temporarily enable for specific site, then while you are on that site(page), click the icon and clcik *Dont run on this page* (or pause). then you can again re-enable.

Anyway, there exist other several extensions to disable image load :

    • for Firefox** : 1) Image Block; 2) ImgLikeOpera (for image blocking) + FlashBlock (for flash blocking)

Hello, Is there a way to block images on Firefox for desktop computers? I noticed that on Firefox for mobile there is a Data Saver in the Advanced section of the settings menu that blocks images.

Chosen solution

You can disable images on the about:config page :

Type about:config in the address bar and press Enter (accept the risk, if asked) Type in the search bar : permissions.default.image and set its value to 2

Then close and restart Firefox.

Note : If you want to disable the loading of images per site : Click on the Page Info icon (little i in a circle at the left end of the address bar) — click on the little black arrow, then on ‘More Information’. Under the Permissions tab, scroll down to ‘Load images’ — uncheck ‘Use Default’ and check ‘Block’.
