Iphone 12 eye strain

(Chris Velazco).

iPhone 12 mini iPhone 12 Mini eye strain

BigDO

macrumors 6502a

Switched to 12 Mini from 11 Pro on Sunday. I had my concerns about battery life, but it’s completely manageable. I love the form factor, weight, size, it’s just the perfect phone.

What I wasn’t prepared for was the eye strain and headaches. I had the X, XS, XS Max and 11 Pro before, and never had any issues with PWM etc causing any discomfort.

Is it possible that the sheer (small) size of the text (I’m using default) is causing eye strain? Anyone else has this issue? I tried zoomed mode but it’s comically large and too little is displayed.

My option is to switch to iPhone 12 or back to iPhone 11 Pro — but I really am not keen on either, as I love the Mini. I am curious if this is something specific to the size of the mini (but I never had any issues with the 4, 5, etc — then again the information density wasn’t the same), or specific to the 12 range? Like I said, I definitely don’t have OLED PWM issues (or I didn’t with the X, Xs, and 11 Pro).

I had the 12 Pro Max and the Mini together before I sold the Max. some people mistakenly think the text is larger on a larger display, this is not true. The text is the exact same size, you can just see more of it on the larger display as seen below. Try increasing the size of the text though maybe.

I have the same problem with my 12 mini. After few minutes of use I feel very uncomfortable. I feel eye stain, headache and dizziness. IPhones with OLED are real trash because they use cheap OLED regulation (PWM) with flickering. A lot of people have this issue from times when iPhone X came out.

Same here. Have been using an iPhone 12 for about a week. 5 min of use is enough for me to feel discomfort in my eyes. More time of using gets me headache and tiredness. I’m planning to return the phone back to the store but it’s quite a problem in my country.

Apple know about this problem since iphone X but don’t care. People still buying new phones and shareholders are every year more happy.

Apple is really company that don’t care about their products even when they make really big mistake in design like cooling system in MacBook Air (intel variant)

Hello, did you mean the display brightness??

Jan 31, 2021 11:51 PM

I am also experiencing the problems with 12 pro..I can’t use iPhone more than 10min. Causing severe eye pain, burning , watering throughout the day..I am first time Apple user. Never had issues with Android mobiles. Very disappointed..With eye pain and burning, I am unable to concentrate on my office work also. .did any one find any solutions to reduce this? Seriously disturbing.

Jan 31, 2021 11:58 PM

Hi, unfortunately, the only solution for me that works was to return iPhone 12 and buy iPhone 11 with LCD.

Feb 1, 2021 12:28 AM

Oh. That was very unfortunate. I need to see, what works best for me..Thank you..

Feb 1, 2021 12:54 AM

Which Model you bought? Everything is ok with that??

Feb 1, 2021 1:02 AM

Hi, I have bought a basic model iPhone 11 128GB. The display is OK and I don’t have any issues

Feb 1, 2021 2:36 AM

Made an account just so I could leave this message. I’ve had my 12 mini for two days and since the first night of using it I felt a strain headache across the top of my forehead/sides of head and dizziness, the only way to describe it is like slight motion sickness.

For me, it is worse when I’m scrolling on text or instagram for example, as it scrolls up it makes me feel dizzy, like motion sickness like when you come off a ride. I’ve come straight from an iPhone6 to this so not sure if it’s the longer screen dimensions and it will take getting used to, it feels like it’s scrolling too quickly for my eyes and my eyes can’t get from the top of the screen back to the middle again in time.. I’ve had iPhones since the first one and never had an issue before.

I normally hold my phone quite close, imagine sitting down, my phone would be parallel to my chest. If I hold this 12 mini there, it strains and pulls my eyes, and feels almost fisheye looking, I have to hold it further away, parallel to my hips almost.

I’m writing this on my laptop as I’ve lost any desire to even use this phone, it irritates me just being around it, unless that’s subconsciously at the amount I paid for it. Not impressed. Very much considering getting an SE2 or an 11 that still have LED screens, honestly miss my 6 after this.

Anyone reading this who hasn’t left a comment, I urge you to so they get more feedback on it and hopefully do something about it.

Feb 3, 2021 1:22 AM

I can totally understand your situation Leila.

Got the iphone 12 replaced with SE2 and it is perfect since then. Also using iphone 8 plus. No issues whatsoever. Apple needs to seriously consider how to fix this horrible flickering topic of Oled screens. Until this issue is reaolved, all the current generation & upcoming Oled Iphones are worthless for lot of people.

Feb 3, 2021 1:52 AM

Unfortunately the iPhone 12 device may impact some users like myself. I tried tweaking settings however nothing works.

You may want to try other devices that don’t cause issues, I have tried other non Apple OLED devises that are current in market with no issues.

Rather than stick with the 12, I chose to return the device and buy an 11 which I have no issues with, most likely due to the difference in screen technology

Feb 3, 2021 2:13 AM

SAME! I have the same problems with iphone 12 and 12pro, they both hurts my eyes very much, I haven’t got these problems with any of the previous generation iphones, but iphone 12 made my eye hurts for only using it couple minutes!

Feb 3, 2021 5:16 PM

There’s is nothing Apple can do for displays already in the hands of users.

Feb 3, 2021 5:19 PM

Hello people. i have same problem with my 11 pro.

I can’t focus on writing, the pictures, I feel a pressure in my head and my eyes start to sting and I feel dizzy after a few minutes of use . at 11 pro / XS of my friends I don’t have the same symptoms . it seems that only some batches have this problem . i guess it depends on the company that produces the displays (LG, Sharp or Samsung), . I will go with it under warranty until I finally solve something. I can’t afford an expensive phone without using it

I will send it into their hands then

Feb 5, 2021 12:53 AM

Thank god I’m not the only one!

I bought a iPhone 12 Pro Max and after 2 minutes had a sore head, blurred vision which is absolutely ridiculous for the price of the phone.

I then sent it back and got a iPhone 12 but had the same issue so had to send that back.

I bought a iPhone 11 but let’s face it the screen is rubbish for this day and age so I’m now jumping ship to another company.

Really disappointed apple and such a shame.

Question: Q: Iphone 12 display causing headache and eye strain

Kirk, shooing this issue away doesn’t make it disappear. It’s a thing. It’s real for some of us. And it’s highly unlikely that many of us loyal Apple fans suddenly have ophthalmological diseases.

Hey, using my iPhone 12 for 2 weeks and having same issues, mostly headache, dissiness aftee short use of the phone. Never had this before with other OLED displays.

Dec 20, 2020 2:27 AM

Yes, within two minutes of using the iPhone Pro Max my eyes/head hurt. I’ve never had this issue before. I’ve bought and now returned 3 iPhone 12 Pros. I now have an iPhone 11 in my pocket. 😐

FWIW, there’s some indication Apple is aware of screen issues with some 12 Pros (e.g. MacRumors wrote a piece recently about an Apple Support memo acknowledging “tints” + “flickering”.)

My best guess: Apple developed the 12 Pro models planning on a 120Hz refresh rate—and they trashed that plan because of poorer than expected battery life (and they market didn’t require the refresh rate.) They likely went further down this battery optimization path (using PWM) than they ever have in any prior model—all the way to using PWM at every brightness level.

Test the theory in that last sentence for yourself:

Slo-mo film an iPhone 12 model next to any other (recent) model iPhone. Ensure both phones are at 100% brightness, have the same (white) web/app page pulled up, and press record for 10-20 seconds. Now tell me which one is is flickering slower. My money is on that fancy new iPhone.

I also think Apple knew more folks would have eye/headache issues with these phones than previous models but they were okay with it. And I don’t blame them. I doubt even 5% of their market has issues with PWM, but that’s not the reason I don’t blame them.

The main reason I’ve decided I don’t care either? I understand they need to make trade offs. They had enough amazing tech in these new models that they didn’t end up needing the 120Hz anyways from a marketing/sales perspective. In some ways, even if the percentage of affected users is higher, that only creates more demand for the iPhone 13–which will sport display technology eliminating all these concerns: LPTO and 120Hz+ refresh rate.

PS. Before one of you level 9ers or 10ers chimes in with, “You have a medical issue, bro. Go talk to your doctor”, I’d like to ask that you spare us sensitive snowflakes from your wisdom this time. I’m an ophthalmologist. 😉
