iPhone 13 mini prototype photographed, the two cameras are now laid out diagonally
Last week we saw renders of the iPhone 13 mini, which showed a slightly redesigned camera with the two lenses in a diagonal arrangement instead of one over the other. The latest leak, a hands-on photo of a prototype mini, shows just that same design and lends credibility to the renders.
Note that this is just a prototype – Apple is months away from starting mass production of the 13-series, so the design is not set in stone. If Cupertino does settle on this design, it will most likely be carried over to the larger iPhone 13 as well.
Hands-on photo of an iPhone 13 mini prototype
This can be seen in the CAD-based renders by xleaks7 and Pigtou, also from last week. The two Pro models will probably remain unchanged, however, as they have to fit three cameras in their square (plus LiDAR). Everything Apple Pro EAP has made a video about the iPhone 13 mini and Pro Max design and even 3D printed dummies.
Anyway, the reason for the new layout may be to fit a larger sensor. And by the sound of it, the camera bumps on the entire 13-series will get thicker.

Apple iPhone 13 mini review
Pricing
Introduction
The Apple iPhone 13 mini is the most compact flagship smartphone money can buy. It’s also easy enough to outright recommend to anyone looking for this particular type of device. It is astonishingly rare to find such a pocket-friendly smartphone, let alone one of flagship caliber.
Apple launched the first iPhone mini a year ago, and while it did not turn out to be the massive success some hoped for it to be, it was still a popular purchase among the fans of compact phones, Android and iOS alike. But because of the lackluster sales, the rumor has it the iPhone 13 mini will be the last of its kind before it is merged with the iPhone SE in a year or two.
The iPhone 13 mini brings few updates over the iPhone 12 mini — an improved chipset, a better main camera with new sensor and stabilization, about 10% battery capacity increase, and a couple of software features. And a smaller screen notch, of course! But we imagine few if any iPhone 12 mini users will be upgrading to the iPhone 13 mini.
But as a standalone smartphone, the iPhone 13 mini seems like a great offer for a number of reasons — it is the cheapest current flagship iPhone with unmatched compact and lightweight design. It employs the most durable design on the market so far, runs on the most powerful Apple A15 chip with 5G, has excellent cameras, there are loud stereo speakers and a great 5.4″ OLED screen with Dolby Vision support.
Let’s make a quick run through the specs now.
Apple iPhone 13 mini specs at a glance:
- Body: 131.5×64.2×7.7mm, 141g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass), glass back (Gorilla Glass), aluminum frame; IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 6m for 30 mins), Apple Pay (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX certified).
- Display: 5.40″ Super Retina XDR OLED, HDR10, Dolby Vision, 800 nits (HBM), 1200 nits (peak), 1080x2340px resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 476ppi; Wide color gamut, True-tone.
- Chipset: Apple A15 Bionic (5 nm): Hexa-core (2×3.22 GHz Avalanche + 4xX.X GHz Blizzard); Apple GPU (4-core graphics).
- Memory: 128GB 4GB RAM, 256GB 4GB RAM, 512GB 4GB RAM; NVMe.
- OS/Software: iOS 15.
- Rear camera:Wide (main): 12 MP, f/1.6, 26mm, 1.7µm, dual pixel PDAF, sensor-shift OIS; Ultrawide: 12 MP, f/2.4, 120˚, 13mm.
- Front camera:Wide (main): 12 MP, f/2.2, 23mm, 1/3.6″; Wide (main): 12 MP, f/2.2, 23mm, 1/3.6″.
- Video capture:Rear camera: 4K@24/30/60fps, 1080p@30/60/120/240fps, HDR, Dolby Vision HDR (up to 60fps), stereo sound rec; Front camera: 4K@24/25/30/60fps, 1080p@30/60/120fps, gyro-EIS.
- Battery: 2438mAh; Fast charging 20W, 50% in 30 min (advertised), USB Power Delivery 2.0, MagSafe wireless charging 15W, Qi magnetic fast wireless charging 7.5W.
- Misc: Face ID, accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer; NFC; Siri natural language commands and dictation, Ultra Wideband (UWB) support.
For a device of this size, the Apple iPhone 13 mini is jam-packed with features. We can’t but appreciate that how Apple made the mini possible without cutting any corners — it is basically a shrunk version of the regular iPhone 13. It even offers Face ID and MagSafe wireless charging. And despite the new improvements, Apple managed to increase the battery capacity, too.
The iPhone 13 mini, just like the iPhone 13, has a regular 60Hz OLED, though that’s hardly surprising. The ProMotion screen is reserved for the iPhone ProModels. And that’s probably the only missing feature worth a mention before we get this review started.
Unboxing the Apple iPhone 13 mini
The iPhone 13 mini may be jam-packed with features, but its retail bundle is the opposite. Inside the thin paper box, you will find the iPhone 13 mini and a USB cable.
If you dig a little deeper, you’ll also discover the SIM ejection pin and one Apple sticker. This year Apple’s removed all plastic wrapping of its boxes and became even greener, so we guess the iconic sticker will be a goner soon enough.

Apple iPhone 13 mini in for review
Ricky 08 October 2021
The Apple iPhone 13 mini has arrived into the office and it’s the last iPhone we’re going to review. This is the entry-level iPhone for 2021 and this may be the last time we see a ‘mini’ iPhone. The iPhone 13 mini is identical to the iPhone 13, minus the obvious reduction in size.
The new mini phone brings the same updated cameras as the 13, and battery life is expected to be better. The phone comes with a USB-C to Lightning charging cable, a SIM eject tool, and an Apple sticker. Storage also starts at 128GB versus the 12 mini’s 64GB.
This phone has a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen with support for HDR10 and its resolution is 1080 x 2340 px. Apple’s Ceramic Glass is also featured here, just as it is on the rest of the iPhone 13 lineup. The A15 Bionic chipset makes its appearance here, but with 4GB of RAM instead of the Pro and Pro Max’s 6GB.
The updated camera module brings a larger main sensor, complete with sensor-shift OIS across the lineup. The ultrawide and selfie cameras remain unchanged, on paper, that is. We’re expecting to see improved camera performance across the board, but mostly so with the main camera. Low-light photography should also see noticeable improvement. Basically we are expecting the camera to perform like the iPhone 13 did.
We are interested to see if the new iPhone 13 mini will out-endure its predecessor in battery life. The iPhone 12 mini scored 69h but Apple did say that the new model should have notably improved battery life with slightly higher capacity.
Our lab testing of the new iPhone 13 mini will begin soon so stick around!

Still waiting for the SE3 coming. The vintage touch ID and the real full screen, probably the first iphone with the small notch just like what the Samsung does.
I got the new iPhone 13 mini last week. I previously had an iPhone 11 256gb storage. I was looking at the iPhone 13 when I grabbed the mini and asked “ what’s the difference between them” and he pretty much said nothing. They have the same features f.
It doesn’t die faster, the max lasted about two and half days with or without a single charge I’m pretty sure that the mini will be discontinued for the larger iphone next year cause I feel like it would be an improvement over the .

Apple iPhone 13 and 13 mini official: smaller notch and new main cameras
Victor 14 September 2021
The new iPhone 13 duo is official, with a familiar design, but several important upgrades. The overall shape of the iPhone 13 and 13 mini hasn’t changed much — flat edges and rounder corners are married once more in an IP68-rated metal body. This time around, the distinctive notch has gotten smaller by 20%.
The diagonals of the Super Retina XDR panels remain unchanged — 5.4 inches for the iPhone 13 mini and 6.1 inches for the iPhone 13. The panels themselves are 28% brighter, reaching up to 800 nits of max outdoor brightness and a whopping 1200 nits of peak HDR brightness. Speaking of HDR, the new panels support Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG standards.
One thing you will be missing out on with the vanilla iPhone 13 and the mini is the 120Hz display refresh rate, as they are stuck as 60Hz just like every iPhone so far.
An all-new Apple A15 bionic sits at the heart of the new iPhone 13 and 13 mini. According to Apple, the A15 is the fastest chipset in any current smartphone. Quite a bold claim, but likely true given Apple’s track record.
The A15 has two high-performance CPU cores and four additional high-efficiency ones and is built on an efficient 5nm manufacturing node. The GPU uses a custom design, as well and while that is shared between all iPhone 13 models, including the Pro ones, it is worth noting that the A15 inside the vanilla iPhone 13 and the 13 mini get four GPU cores, instead of the five in their more premium siblings.
The new A15 has a new 16 core Neural Engine too, powering features such as on-device voice and image recognition and other advanced machine learning tasks. On top of that, there is a new ISP on board, twice the amount of cache, as well as a new display engine and new video encoders and decoders.
It almost feels like «new» has been grossly overused already, yet we haven’t even talked about the camera setup. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have two cameras on the back with the main one having a 12MP sensor with 1.7µm pixels and 26mm f/1.6 lens. That’s seemingly the exact same imager found in the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s main camera, complete with the sensor-shift stabilization.
The 12MP ultrawide f/2.4 camera gets a new sensor as well, but it doesn’t get autofocus like on the iPhone 13 Pro models.
On the front, the 12MP TrueDepth selfie camera supports the increasingly-popular Centre Stage feature to follow you around in the frame automatically, as well as accommodate more people.
Finally, both the regular iPhone 13 and the mini get bigger batteries than their predecessors. Apple didn’t share any particular figures, but promised up to 2.5 hours and 1.5 hours of extra time on a charge for the two models, respectively, compared to the iPhone 12 generation.
This has resulted in a weight increase though, with the iPhone 13 tipping the scale at 174 grams and the mini — 141 grams. The new models are also 0.25mm thicker than their predecessors, but their other dimensions remain unchanged.
Apple has also worked on power-efficiency with the iPhone 13 models switching from 5G to LTE, when the higher speeds are not needed. And speaking of 5G, the iPhone 13 supports more bands and carriers than their predecessors.
The iPhone 13 and 13 mini will be available for pre-order starting Friday, September 17, at 5 a.m. PDT in over 30 countries, including Australia, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, the UK and the US. They will start shipping on September 24.
Both the iPhone 13 and 13 mini now come with 128GB of base storage and can be had with 256GB and 512GB. Pricing starts from $799 and $699, respectively.
There are a total of five aluminum colors, including starlight, midnight, blue, pink and the (PRODUCT)RED edition.

The OS is lightweight which contributed to better battery life. Huawei did the same with their harmony OS, when they degoogled, the battery gains were tremendous. It had nothing to do with the A14/A15 chip. You won’t see any improvemen.
Agreed, something like the SD860 would have sufficed.
IMO It’s also a shame they went with that soc decision in Zenfone 8. They should have used something a bit lower end that provides better battery life, thermals and lower cost.
