iPhone 4 “death grip” is back, now with the Verizon version

We hoped the antenna re-design of the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 wouldn’t have the reception issues, which plagued the GSM one. Sadly it turns out we were bound to run into the problem again, as the so called «death grip» is back, this time with the Verizon iPhone 4.
Consumer Report, a US web site, which made a really big splash with their technical research on the iPhone 4 antenna issue, now confirms the latest CDMA version of the smartphone is still susceptible to the so-called «death grip».

The problem occurs when you cover the tiny gap in the lower left corner of the iPhone 4 outer rim. Like, say, when you’re holding your phone in a typical way. This can result in dropped signal bars or even dropped calls in areas with bad signal.
As before, should you cover the external iPhone 4 antenna with a bumper or some sort of case, the problem will be solved. Apple announced a free bumper-case program for people who had bought the phone and had issues with signal loss. It looks like we may soon see the process repeated.
It’s disappointing to see the new release of one of the best selling smartphones in the world has the same unresolved issue from last year.

People who say ios is better are just wrong, my arguement lies where if its so good why are so many people jailbreaking them to get android features or symbian feaures do your selves a favour and just buy an android phone which YOU can edit to how YO.

Zeus, 28 Feb 2011 I am sorry to say but Apple has set the stage for all this, we wouldn’t be here with Jobs visi. more lol. Apple make pretty products, have a very effective marketing department, and a large base of insufferable hipsters who buy every overpriced and unnecessary product they make regardless of quality, on the false assumption that buying into a «cool» expensive brand must make them cool also. Contrary to your hilarious delusions, there is little to no actual innovation in anything they make. Mobile video calling, tablets, ultraportables etc were all done many years ago. E.g. the Nokia 6630 did video calling in *2004*, and by 2005 it was a *widespread mainstream feature* in Japan on phones like the NEC N901iC. But of course you didn’t know that, because you blindly believe everything their marketing tells you. Nor is apple some kind of force for good in the world — despite their obscene profits, the charitable donations of Jobs / Apple are virtually nil compared to the Gates Foundation / MS, which is the result of a deliberate policy by Jobs (check his wikipedia article.)
Probably the funniest example of mac zealotry I have seen is when apple launched an AA battery charger, which was no different from any other except having an apple logo and thus costing literally twice as much. MacRumours consequently exploded in a sea of frothy fanboyism about how incredible and revolutionary a product it was, praising apple for allowing them to buy it, declaring apple had «done it again» and so forth.
Honestly, you people worry me with how easily controlled you are. I guess we’d better hope that the next radical politician doesn’t have marketing as good as apple’s.

«Death grip» seems to convey the wrong message. like it’s some overkill grip or smth.
While it’s just about a gentle touch in one «wrong» spot; «death brush» basically (though «death touch» has also decent ring to it, considering touchscreens and all)
I dont have any problem with my iphone 4. I have tried an android, symbian and bada phone and iOS is the best!

Bricked, 01 Mar 2011 The N8 has not frozen up once. It’s the most stable Symbian yet. And it’s as fast and responsi. more I used the n8 for the first time and tried to play a movie. the phone hanged. The n8 browser is a joke. Hardly any apps available. The OS is not really top notch.

And my point was pretty obvious. If I held both phones I never had any dropped signal. That was irrelevent.

i personally think it makes more sense for apple to keep any hardware issues on the verizon iphone, the point is to give their rabid fans a pretty toy to satisfy the demand for a verizon device, while at the same time keeping something that apple can point to on the next iphone where they will «fix» it, but of course something else will be broken that they will address in the following generation, it makes no business sense for them to produce a perfect phone, it’s the imperfections that bring back their loyal mob in buying each new version in the false hope of finally nabbing that elusive perfect phone
Why do people make a huge deal out of this, so like having one bar less is really the end of the world.

Of all the people I have met using iphone, half are fed up with it and will not buy a new one. The other half like games on the iphone,so they might as well go for the ipod touch. Although many iphone users will not upgrade to the next gen device because of problems such as signal loss, the iphone is not that spread as a phone and there are lots of suckers out there saving up to buy their first ever iphone,not knowing what they’re getting into. If you like the iphone, buy an ipad and a proper (nokia,lg,motorola etc.)phone.

well, u can still use ur iPhone as iPod,if u havent bought one already. Even in case of wi-fi signal strength,my old Nokia N79 shows 85% signal whereas my iPhone 3GS or iPod 2G cudnt detect any! Lols..

Signal reception, the most basic and important thing on the phone that you cannot compromise and yet lots people out there paid blindly for that.
This just shows you that lots of iPhone owners out there were ignorant and willing to be toyed by Apple for their hard earn cash, and some of these people were the smartest and barking the loudest.
Given a chance, I would love to hear how Chris Rock bring out the «death grip» jokes in his own word. That guy is really funny.
Yeah the magic of an iPhone4, now you hear me. now you don’t! It can an unwanted call just disappear! I just don’t get it, you had the same stupid problem last yeah, but naw why spend the extra money in R&D to fix it. It just goes to show that they really don’t care what kind of flaws are in the device, as long as it has that lower case «i» it’ll sell millions. I’ll stick to my Blackberry, HTC, or Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, well pretty much everyone else. The iPhone has an app for everything, to bad you can’t talk to someone on it lol.

Легендарная история о прототипе четвёртого поколения iPhone, потерянного в баре, уже давно известна с официальной точки зрения. Известна она и со слов Gizmodo, ставших катализатором взрывоопасной ситуации вокруг устройства. Но до сих пор мало что было известно про человека, который лично нашёл прототип и пострадал из-за него больше всех остальных. История Брайана впервые предана огласке им же самим в публичном интервью с пользователями социальной сети reddit.
В злополучный день события развивались следующим образом:
Я был в баре поздно ночью с двумя друзьями. Они ушли в туалет, и откуда-то вышел незнакомый мне пьяный парень, который подошёл ко мне, поднял телефон со стула и сказал: «Не забудь свой телефон!». Я сказал ему, что это не мой телефон и что не знал, кому он принадлежит. Тогда парень отдал его мне и предложил поискать владельца среди посетителей бара. Я расспрашивал вокруг и не находил владельца, а потом, когда мои друзья вернулись, мы ушли и по дороге думали, как бы найти владельца и вернуть ему телефон.
На следующий день я поначалу забыл, что вообще нашёл этот телефон. А потом пытался понять, кому он может принадлежать. Я проверял объявления о пропаже на Craigslist, а затем начал рассматривать сам телефон. Вначале я заметил, что экран был более четким, чем у других iPhone, которые я раньше видел, а также обратил внимание на пластиковые заглушки и кнопки в странных местах. Я снял чехол и увидел iPhone с плоской задней панелью, плоскими рёбрами и фронтальной камерой. Сзади были две наклейки с кодом, а вместо серийного номера было много букв «X». Я очень заинтересовался всем этим, но пока даже не понимал, что это было на самом деле.
Первое логичное желание человека, далекого от мира технологий — подключить неизвестное устройство к компьютеру. Лучше бы этого он не делал:
Когда я подключил прототип к компьютеру, он потребовал запуска такой версии iTunes, которой вообще тогда не существовало, и через некоторое время он окончательно «умер». Я так и не понял, от чего именно.
Один из его друзей решил пойти ва-банк и связался с Apple напрямую. Не срослось — не поверили и «отшили». И тогда они оба начали предлагать устройство западным техноблогам и тематическим новостным сайтам. Показать устройство они хотели за деньги. О продаже речь вообще не шла.
Предложением заинтересовались в Engadget, но их мотивы были очень туманными. Ребята в Gizmodo отнеслись к нам серьёзно. Мы увиделись, и они тоже подумали, что это настоящий iPhone. Через месяц после первой встречи, Gizmodo написали статью и раскрыли данные про устройство.
Так на какой сумме порешили обе стороны? И какие были условия? Оказывается, Брайан не рассчитал своих сил: Gizmodo не только не сделали его богаче, но и обманули.
Gizmodo сказали мне, что дадут 5 тысяч долларов за историю и ещё 3 тысячи, если Apple подтвердит, что это настоящее устройство. Наверное, они знали, что я точно не смогу спросить с них эти 3 тысячи после публикации статьи, и я действительно не смог. Мне пришлось нанять дорогого адвоката и выплатить ему гораздо больше, чем 5 тысяч.
Gizmodo также попросили временно забрать с собой прототип, чтобы рассмотреть его внимательнее. Но они вскрыли его и использовали как рычаг давления на Apple для собственной выгоды. Ребята в Gizmodo/Gawker использовали меня, ИМХО.
Как только история была опубликована, Gizmodo действительно начала свою игру, в которой было немало грязи, хамства, наглости и прочих удивительных вещей, о которых ранее рассказал один из редакторов сайта — сразу после смерти Стива Джобса. Gizmodo давила на Apple, требуя с них официального подтверждения происхождения устройства. Такой документ был бы настоящей информационной бомбой, которая подняла бы посещаемости и клики на сайте до огромных высот. О своей репутации они не беспокоились. Как результат, уже третий год они не числятся в списках приглашённых на WWDC и презентации Apple.
Но вернёмся к Брайану. В оригинале статьи Gizmodo о нём по понятным причинам никто не говорил. Не было ни имён, ни явок, ни паролей. Проблема подкралась незаметно: он проговорился о ситуации своей девушке, которая написала переполненный злобой пост в Facebook. Пост моментально нашли СМИ и удалять что-либо было уже поздно.
Всё это очень жестко отразилось на моих родных. Рядом с моим домом стояли фургоны новостных агентств, и нам пришлось переселиться в отель на неделю, пока они наконец не уехали. Моё имя и прочие данные попали в СМИ благодаря моей девушке, которая написала о ситуации в Facebook. Я попросил всё удалить, но СМИ нашли заметку. Девушка не смогла вытерпеть стресс событий, которые произошли после этого, и мы расстались где-то спустя 3 месяца.
В то же время полиция открыла уголовное дело с подачи Apple. Дом Брайана очень скоро подвергся обыску. Скрыться от правосудия он не пытался, потому что даже не знал обо всём этом. Да и скрыться с такими «друзьями» ему никогда бы не удалось:
Впервые я вернулся домой спустя три недели после публикации. Выяснилось, что моя сожительница всё это время активно выдавала полиции всё обо мне, делясь всеми возможными данными ради перспективы получить денежное вознаграждение. Она фотографировала мои вещи, записывала все наши разговоры и прямым текстом врала про некоторые моменты, чтобы полиция сформировала настолько понятное и очевидное дело, насколько это вообще возможно. Знакомые сообщили мне о том, что она делает, и она тоже об этом прознала — и потому они пришли ко мне «поговорить». Я был тогда в доме своих родителей, и о нём она тоже им рассказала.
В итоге никакого вознаграждения не было. Она просто была настолько жадной, что была готова на всё ради денег. На мой взгляд, у неё было немало «загонов», типичных для социопатов.
Как только до Брайана добралась полиция, Apple решила спустить на него всех собак:
Сама Apple однозначно пыталась узнать как можно больше о ситуации, но со мной лично они так и не пообщались. Детектив, который рекомендовал прокурору жесткие меры наказания, входил в команду людей, открыто нанятых Apple. Так что они тоже тут были замешаны.

По итогам суда, Брайан отделался относительно легко: с него взяли 125 долларов за само устройство, а также дали 40 часов исправительных работ и 1 год испытательного периода. Теперь он не пользуется техникой Apple. Вообще.
Я теперь интересуюсь PC и Android.
А что стало с инженером Apple, который потерял прототип в баре?
Я выяснил, что через два дня после этого его уволили. Но позже восстановили. Я думал, что его на самом деле не увольняли, но недавно я рассказывал всю историю сотруднику Apple, и он подтвердил мои опасения. Было очень стыдно.
Ну и про бар тоже не забудем:
Я любил это место, но один из барменов и один вышибала решили отказать мне во входе и обслуживании из-за всей этой истории. Всё это при том, что из-за меня они косвенно заработали тысячи долларов. Они также выставляют напоказ тот факт, что это произошло именно у них в баре. Наверное, я сейчас уже могу туда вернуться, но мне совсем не хочется.
А прототип iPhone вернулся в Apple. Только в разобранном и совсем нерабочем виде. [reddit-ama]
