EA Mobile’s Frank Gibeau puts iPhone 6 on a par with PS4 and Xbox One

The countdown to the release of the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus begins. Now we have to add to this the opinion of Frank Gibeau, an EA Mobile executive who says that the specifications will be on par with the PS4 and the Xbox One .

Gibeau is very optimistic about the possibilities offered by the next generations of smartphones , among which are the two new iPhones that will go on sale on September 19th in some countries such as the United States.

The latest generation of the iPhone has been stepping on it and according to this EA Mobile executive, its performance will be comparable to that of the latest generation of video consoles such as the PS4 or Xbox One, which are currently on the market.

Retina HD display or new processor, key specifications

Frank Gibeau is the head of Electronic Arts’ mobile division and recently told GamesIndustry.biz that the new iPhone 6 is a clear example that the performance gap between game consoles and smartphones is getting smaller and smaller .

According to the executive, the Retina HD display, the enhanced A8 chip together with the M8 motion co-processor and the 128GB storage option make the new iPhone 6 and a device that is on par with the aforementioned next-generation consoles.

Last week Apple unveiled its two new smartphone models: the iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch screen with a resolution of 1,334×750 pixels, while the 6 Plus integrates a 5.5-inch screen and a resolution of 1920×1,080 pixels .

There are still some unknowns about iPhone 6

As they say in GameSpot, today we still don’t know some data that are also important in games , like RAM memory or the cores that form the processor. According to the latest rumours, both models will have 1GB of RAM and a processor that will work at 1.4GHz, however we will not leave any doubt until the first iPhone 6 is released and dismantled.

If this data is true, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus would fall far short of what the new generation consoles offer, as both the Xbox One and PS4 have 8GB of RAM . Finally, Frank Gibeau and his team at EA Mobile are already investigating how to develop games for another of Apple’s big announcements last Tuesday, the Apple Watch.

The latest addition to Apple’s line of smartphones will be comparable in performance to next-generation consoles, according to one EA executive.

Frank Gibeau, who manages Electronic Arts’ mobile division, told GamesIndustry.biz he believes that the iPhone 6 demonstrates the diminishing performance gap between home consoles and mobiles.

Enumerating various iPhone 6 specs and features, Gibeau said: «With the retina display and the improved processor, combined with the Metal [graphics] capabilities and 128 GB of memory, that gets you to a device that’s on part [sic] with next-generation consoles. That’s moving perfectly into our strike zone,» he claimed.

Apple revealed two new versions of its iPhone for the first time on Tuesday. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch screen (1334×750 resolution), while the larger 6 Plus carries a 5.5-inch screen (1920×1080).

The corporation didn’t detail each device’s specs, but the latest rumors suggest it will carry one Gigabyte of RAM and a processor that runs at about 1.4 gigahertz.

If correct, or even if these specs are doubled, the iPhone would not be anywhere near as powerful as next-generation consoles. From a memory standpoint alone, the PS4 and Xbox One both carry 8GB.

Another key factor is that home consoles are always attached to a power supply, meaning that they can draw significantly more energy than a portable battery such as the iPhone’s.

However, with the upcoming iOS8 firmware, Apple intends to reduce the demands of background processes significantly, meaning that games and apps will be free to draw more memory.
