My iPhone Microphone Is Not Working! Here’s The Fix.

You’re sitting in your office, waiting for a phone call from your boss. When she finally calls, you say “Hello?”, only to be met with, “Hey, I can’t hear you!” “Oh no,” you think to yourself, “my iPhone’s microphone is broken.”

Luckily, this is a relatively common problem with iPhones new and old. In this article, I’ll explain why your iPhone microphone is not working and walk you step-by-step through how to fix an iPhone mic.

First, Test And Inspect Your iPhone’s Microphone

The first thing you should do when your iPhone’s microphone stops working is to test it using different apps. This is because your iPhone has three microphones: one on the back for recording video audio, one on the bottom for speakerphone calls and other voice recordings, and one in the earpiece for phone calls.

How Do I Test The Microphones On My iPhone?

To test the front and rear microphones, shoot two quick videos: one using the front camera and one using the rear camera and play them back. If you hear audio in the videos, the video’s respective microphone is working fine.

To test the bottom microphone, launch the Voice Memos app and record a new memo by pressing the large red button at the center of the screen.

Close Any Apps That Have Access To Microphone

It’s possible that an app which has access to Microphone is causing the problem. That app may have crashed, or Microphone may be active within the app. You can see which apps have access to Microphone by going to Settings -> Privacy -> Microphone.

Open the app switcher to close your apps. If your iPhone has Face ID, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to the center of the screen. If your iPhone doesn’t have Face ID, double-press the Home button. Then, swipe your apps up and off the top of the screen.

Clean The Microphone

If you find that one of your iPhone’s microphones sounds muffled after you test it or it has no sound at all, let’s clean them. My favorite way to clean iPhone microphones is by using a dry, un-used toothbrush to clean the microphone grill at the bottom of your iPhone and the small black dot microphone to the right of the rear-facing camera. Simply slide the toothbrush over the microphones to dislodge any stuck pocket lint, dirt, and dust.

You can also use compressed air to clean your iPhone’s microphones. If you take this route, however, make sure to spray gently and far away from the microphones themselves. Compressed air can damage microphones if sprayed at too close of a proximity — so start by spraying from a distance and move closer if you need to.

Make sure to test your iPhone’s microphone again after cleaning. If you find that your iPhone microphone still is not working, move onto the next step.

My iPhone Microphone Still Isn’t Working!

The next step is to reset your iPhone’s settings. This won’t erase any content (except for Wi-Fi passwords), but will set all of your iPhone’s settings back to factory default, erasing bugs that may be causing your microphones to not respond. I highly recommend backing up your phone before erasing your iPhone’s settings.

How Do I Reset My iPhone’s Settings?

Launch the Settings app on your iPhone and tap Settings -> General -> Transfer Or Reset iPhone -> Reset -> Reset All Settings. Enter your passcode if prompted, then tap Reset All Settings again. Your iPhone will complete the reset, then reboot itself.

Question: Q: iPhone 6 External Mic not working for Siri/Dictation

I am finding that the external mic on my iPhone 6 works for phone calls and voice memos, but does not work for Siri/Dictation. When I plug in the earbuds, they work for everything (including Siri/Dictation).

Was chatting to Apple support who had me reset all settings. I thought that worked, but realized that after a reset, Siri is off and I was talking to «Voice control» (which works). When I turned Siri back on, it does not work.

I have two questions for the community to see if you can help:

1- I have been assuming this must be a software problem since the mic does work for non-Siri access. But is that true? Is there a hardware component that Siri depends on which could be faulty here?

2- If it is software, what action should I try to address it? I have done a reset all settings already and that did not help.

My Siri/dictation just stopped working 3 days ago on my IPhone 6 too. Apple wants me to do a factory reset, but I’m afraid I’m going to go to all that hassle and it’s not going to fix the problem. I think it’s a software issue. I had just upgraded to 8.2.

Hello, my iphone 6 plus has microphone issue also. I trouble shoot everything including reset network setting, all setting and reload backup from iCloud. The microphone on iPhone is still not picking up voice when I talk on the phone. The other party only hear heavy statics and my voice is extremely low and I need to yell at the phone. I tested with a few different friends and I was at different locations with same outcome, so it is not network or cellular issue. I tried bluetooth and Apple EarPods that came with the phone, no issue. And the Apple EarPods will fix the issue temporarily. The microphone will work for a day or two, then the issue will come back. Therefore, it should be a software issue since the microphone is actually working intermittently and it can be fixed by inserting the EarPods. Please let me know if anyone has the same issue and tell me what I can do? Thank you and have a nice day.

Same issue here. Works for google and other apps immediately but with siri (and text dictation) it takes 4-5 seconds before receiving/acknowledging sound. Did a light reset as well as a factory reboot and neither did anything. Was told by blue shirt dude at store that should these options not work it would result in a new piece of hardware (i.e. new phone). Going back in on TH (16th) to see if that will really play out.

Hi, everyone. I talked to Apple Genius at Apple Store last week, she said it should be a software issue and I needed to reset my iphone 6 plus as a new device and I can not use the backup restore from my iCloud, it was because the microphone bug or glitch can be in the backup also. Ok, followed her advice, erased all contents and set my iphone as a new device , the microphone worked for an hour, but went bad again. I used «voice memo» app from Apple to test the microphone. It is the best tool since it doesn’t involve any provider’s network and it doesn’t need another person’s phone to listen and test. If you can hear your voice recording clearly, then the mic works. I tested it 3-4 times a day for a few days now, half of the time the mic doesn’t work. So, set as a new device isn’t working. The issue is intermittent and it comes and goes as it likes, so very annoying. I carry my Apple EarPods with me in these past few days ust in case I need to make important phone calls. Will need to go back to Apple Genius this weekend for sure. Will give update after the weekend.

I Did the same. New phone reset and still gotta yell for Siri to work. Lemme know how the genius works out. I don’t want to go to my Apple Store because it takes too long and my last experience with them wasn’t very good.

Went in and after not too long was pretty clear that this is a brand new issue for apple, it’s not in their Q&A cascade to arrive at some solution. 30minutes tops and walked out with a new phone.

Went to Apple Store and told the Apple Genius about the microphone issue on my iphone 6+. She also used voice memos app but found that the issue was not present. told her that the issue was intermittent, so she listened to all the good and bad voice memos recording that I have in the past few days. And the last Apple Genius from my last visit already documented that the microphone had issue and did new phone reset to resolve it. Apparently, new phone reset didn’t resolve anything. Apple Genius gave me a brand new iphone 6+ without further question because those voice memos are good evidence that the mic was not doing its job all the time. Now I am happy that the issue is resolved once and for all. Both experiences at Apple Store were very pleasant and the Geniuses were very professional and showed interest to help. I know I got a bad phone, but Apple backed it up. Hope anyone who has this issue will get it resolved before phone’s warranty expires. Good luck.

My Siri doesn’t work either. Voice memo ok. When I plug in Apple earbuds it is OK, but can’t walk around trailing cords. Spent over two hours with Apple on phone. They sent me in to Apple store for what I thought was going to be a new 5s, but no, it would cost me $200 plus. Very annoyed
