Iphone camera color space

Question: Q: iPhone Color Space

Does anyone know the preferred image file format to import into an application?

So far, I have been using 32bit pngs saved from Photoshop, but when I test my application in the simulator all of the graphics appear to be lighter in value and desaturated a bit. I guess I could compensate for this when saving my assets, but that seems to be a bit unnecessary.

I even created a test image that was a gradient through the entire color spectrum, and when tested in the simulator some of the colors shifted in the spectrum. primarily in the orange and blue areas?

This sort of behavior can also be seen in InterfaceBuilder it you use an instance of a UIImageView and set its image property to an asset in the Xcode project.

Does anyone know why this is?

I want to use a specific blue in my application, but the colors are shifted.

I checked my color settings in Photoshop and I’m currently using «North American General Purpose 2»

Changing the profile is not showing any visible difference?

I can’t think of any applications that offer more control over color profiles and color spaces than Photoshop. Perhaps you’re simply unfamiliar with its tools.

I also wouldn’t assume that the simulator is going to offer an accurate representation of an actual device’s screen. They always have the contrast and saturation cranked through the roof so they look «good» in harsh viewing conditions.

More controls over color profiles and color spaces is not the problem. The problem is turning those bells and whistles, which are necessary for the prepress industry, off. Unless the images are destined for a display with identically complex ‘color management’, PS shenanigans simply prevent you from seeing what your image will look like.

I admit I am unfamiliar with about 80% of photoshop CS-whatever as, I suspect, are most PS users. Do they have a color management/profile setting that does nothing?

Quite incorrect. Those bells and whistles are there to show you exactly what your image will look like on any given output device (provided you have a profile that accurately describes that device of course), thereby allowing you to target multiple devices reliably with a single file. If you want to soft proof for your own monitor then you pick «Monitor RGB» from the soft proof presets available in the View menu. This will show you how a non-color managed application would interpret your color numbers, effectively taking any embedded profiles out of the loop entirely. If your target device’s color space is unknown then sRGB is usually the safest bet as it’s what most applications and consumer model inkjet drivers assume when they don’t know any better.

The one thing Adobe does incorrectly concerns the gamma tag they embed in PNG files, which is an extremely primitive attempt at color management that probably shouldn’t even exist. They aren’t actually doing anything wrong, they’re just interpreting the somewhat ambiguous specification in a way that happens to be at odds with most other vendors and they refuse to change for whatever prideful reasons they have.

Description

Camera Color Picker is a tool for getting color from camera and vice versa.

Features:
• Read color from camera in realtime.
• Capture and save image with color data embed.
• Option to save original image.
• Color output from RGB, CMYK, HSB/HSV, HSL and HEX for web.
• Convert color to grayscale.
• Tap to copy color code to clipboard.

Quick note:
RGB color space.
The RGB color model is an additive color model in which red, green, and blue light are added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colors.

CMYK color space.
The CMYK color model (process color, four color) is a subtractive color model, used in color printing, and is also used to describe the printing process itself. CMYK refers to the four inks used in some color printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and key (black).

HEX color space.
A hex triplet is a six-digit, three-byte hexadecimal number used in HTML, CSS, SVG, and other computing applications to represent colors. The bytes represent the red, green and blue components of the color. One byte represents a number in the range 00 to FF (in hexadecimal notation), or 0 to 255 in decimal notation.

HSB/HSV color space.
The HSB/HSV (Hue, Saturation, Brightness) color model defines a color space in terms of three constituent components: Hue : the color type (such as red, blue, or yellow).

HSL color space.
The HSL (Hue, Saturation and Luminance). The HSL color space defines colors more naturally: Hue specifies the base color, the other two values then let you specify the saturation of that color and how bright the color should be.

Grayscale.
Grayscale is a range of shades of gray without apparent color. The darkest possible shade is black, which is the total absence of transmitted or reflected light. The lightest possible shade is white, the total transmission or reflection of light at all visible wavelength s.
