Iphone custom notification sound

Customize iPhone Ringtones and Notification Sounds

You probably know that you can change the ringtone on your iPhone. What you may not know, is that you can customize many sounds on your iOS device — in fact, nearly all iPhone notification sounds can be changed to your own music or fun effects:

  • Alarm tones
  • Received iMessage/SMS tone
  • New Voicemail tone
  • Email Received/Email Sent sounds
  • Incoming Airdrop alert
  • Calendar Event/Reminder notification sounds

iMazing can help you do this, allowing you to copy almost any type of audio file to your device to use as an iPhone ringtone or alert tone. And you can even do this with the free version of iMazing.

Here’s how to customize iPhone notification sounds:

  1. Install and launch iMazing on your Mac or PC.
  2. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer.
  3. Click the Ringtones icon.
  4. Drag and drop an audio file to iMazing’s window.
  5. Go to Settings >Sound & Haptics on your iPhone or iPad and select a notification sound.

Before you begin

Download and install iMazing on your Mac or PC computer

In-Depth Tutorial

1. Launch iMazing and connect your device

If you have enabled Wi-Fi connection for that device, you’ll be able to use it without a wired connection.

2. Navigate to the Ringtones view

You can access iMazing’s ringtones view by clicking the Ringtones icon in the left sidebar (below your device), or in the main view. iMazing will display tones you’ve already added, and tones you’ve purchased from the iOS Tone Store; system tones are not displayed.

You can use these tones for ringtones, but also for notification sounds, alert tones and alarms.

💡 Tip: You can play any tone you see listed in iMazing. Just double-click the item in the list, or, if you’re on a Mac, select a ringtone and press the spacebar.

3. Importing new tones

Simply drag and drop an audio file from your computer to the ringtones list in iMazing’s window; iMazing will copy it to your device. You can use any of the following file types:

Extension Encoding
.mp3 MP3
.m4a or .m4r AAC and Apple Lossless (ALAC)
.flac FLAC
.wav PCM
.aiff PCM

Alternatively, click the Import button and select a compatible audio file from your computer:

Ringtones and notification sounds can be of any duration; notification sounds must be less than 30 seconds long.

You cannot add audio files with DRM to your device to use as ringtones. This includes older iTunes Store files with DRM and Apple Music files.

4. Choose which tones you want to use.

Here is where on your iPhone or iPad you set the various types of sounds, and how long they can be:

Alert Type Duration Where on iOS?
Ringtone any Settings -> Sounds & Haptics
Alerts Sounds & Haptics
Contact Specific Ringtone any Contacts -> Edit Contact
Contact Specific Text Tone Edit Contact
Alarm any Clock -> Alarm -> Edit

As you can see, most sounds are customized from within the Settings app’s Sounds & Haptics section:

Contact specific ringtones and new iMessage/SMS notification sounds are set directly by editing the relevant contact:

Alarm tones can be defined for every alarm you’ve created in the Clock app:

Alarms and ringtones can be of any duration, but all other sounds must be shorter than 30 seconds. Tracks which are longer than 30 seconds simply won’t appear on your iPhone or iPad when you customize notification sounds.

Important: Even for alert sounds, iOS will play the entire audio track as long as it’s shorter than 30 seconds. Do you really who want to hear a 30 second long snippet of music whenever you receive a text message? Probably not, so trimming your audio before you transfer it to your iPhone is highly recommended. There are quite a few high quality free audio editors to help you do just that:

Change push notification sound

How can I use a custom sound for push notifications?

According to my research and reading, I have found that the payload should have file name that is in the app bundle or in the Library/Sounds folder of the app’s data container.

How to put file there?

Follow Apple documentation for preparing custom sound file for your app.

For remote notifications in iOS, you can specify a custom sound that iOS plays when it presents a local or remote notification for an app. The sound files can be in the main bundle of the client app or in the Library/Sounds folder of the app’s data container.

Custom alert sounds are played by the iOS system-sound facility, so they must be in one of the following audio data formats:

Linear PCM MA4 (IMA/ADPCM) µLaw aLaw You can package the audio data in an aiff, wav, or caf file. Then, in Xcode, add the sound file to your project as a nonlocalized resource of the app bundle or to the Library/Sounds folder of your data container.

You can use the afconvert tool to convert sounds. For example, to convert the 16-bit linear PCM system sound Submarine.aiff to IMA4 audio in a CAF file, use the following command in the Terminal app:

/Desktop/sub.caf -d ima4 -f caff -v You can inspect a sound to determine its data format by opening it in QuickTime Player and choosing Show Movie Inspector from the Movie menu.

Custom sounds must be under 30 seconds when played. If a custom sound is over that limit, the default system sound is played instead.

Once you have made the file, easiest way is to put it in app bundle.

The, when you send push notification, just add the name of file in JSON payload. Example:

Thats it! You don’t have to do anything special in code of app.

Edit:
Please put the file inside your project bundle (i.e inside the hierarchy of project) and have Copy items if needed option selected while drag and drop. The blacked out part has project name.

Question: Q: How to change notification sounds on iPhone

Is there a way to change notification sound for apps other than system apps such Mail, Text or Facebook etc. Because my iPhone by default plays Tri-Tone sound for all my push notifications from third party apps! And it’s very hard to know from the notification as they all have the same sound. Help!

That is not even close to what the person wanted. We don’t want to turn the notification sound on and off, we want to make it play a different sound for different apps. There is no way to do that in Settings > Sounds. There used to be a way to set different sounds for different apps.

What kind of dumb answer is that? But no, iOS is so **** locked down you can’t even change notification sound for every app, thought something like this would be added in iOS 11 but still the same locked OS. Why is Apple so scared of customization.

This does not give me an option for different sounds. Just that I can turn it on and off. So I guess I have the same notification sound for a lot of my apps or can I customize this?

Yeah, this is nuts. I have the same notification sound for LinkedIn, Twitter, (and many others) as I do when my gate opens. My dogs lose it when they hear it so it’s become entirely inconvenient. Apple should easily listen to its’ customers and allow for custom notification sounds the same way phone numbers can have custom ringtones. What’s the problem, Apple?

Pathetic. Samsung Galaxy here I come asap. Apple have lost the plot.

I see that you’re looking to customize your notification sounds for third party apps. I can see why you’d want it set up this way; that does sound very convenient.

Take a look at the following information, particularly the portion at the bottom that mentions «Sounds».

Change alert styles and settings for notifications

Customize your notifications with different alert styles so you can act quickly on emails, calendar invites, messages, and more. To add or change an alert style for a notification, go to Settings > Notifications and select an app.

Notifications from apps can have these alerts styles:

  • Banners: Banner alerts appear at the top of the screen and go away automatically. To reply, swipe down on the banner or swipe up to dismiss it. If you have an iPhone 6s or later, you can respond to a banner alert with 3D Touch. Just press deeply on a banner alert to respond.
  • Alerts: With Alerts, you need to act before you can move on. Depending on the app, you can dismiss the alert or reply to it.
  • Badges: A Badge is the red number that appears on an app icon and shows you how many notifications you have for that app.
  • Sounds: Have an app play a sound to alert you when you receive a notification.
