Iphone has been detected but

Question: Q: An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly

HI everyone.
Plugged my phone in when i got home yesterday and got really excited as it said i could update and text to multiple recipients (you folks at Apple got peed off at New Year’s like the rest of us! Yea).

So accepted and also the ITunes update, went had tea, came back to a «unable to restore your phone» error which was odd. Checked the phone which appeared to have updated, but then when I plugged it back in ITunes kept coming up with the «AN iPhone has been detecetd, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again» message.
Tried that — didn’t work

Tried disconnecting everything, rebooting, reconnecting — same message

Stopped and started the Apple mobile service — same error

uninstalled apple mobile and update services and itunes, disconnected phone, rebooted, reinstalled, reconnected — same error

Tried the poweroff, reboot to restore function, the phone got to a point (emergency connection only) and same error in itunes

Tried deleting the sync history — same error
tried the powe-off one more time — same error and now no working phone!

Gave up took phone back to the shop who have sent it off. They were graet gave me another one with my SIM card in it to try, got home and yep same error on itunes.

Have just uninstalled it again. Before I do anything else, what do i do next to get itunes to recognise an iphone? Help I’m going bonkers!

Question: Q: an iphone has been detected but could not be identified properly

I just installed ios5 on my iPhone 3GS and synced my phone with iTunes. I also enabled wifi sync. Now, whenever I open iTunes, I get the error dialog «An iPhone has been detected but could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again.» Closing the dialog just causes it to reappear, so I can’t use iTunes at all. My phone is not connected to the computer so I obviously can’t disconnect it. Please help?

I am also experiencing a similar problem. The popup error window reappears repeatedly, but I can make it go away after clicking on it. Sometimes is takes 10 or more times, but it will go away for awhile.

Additionally, iTunes doesn’t seem to recognize when a device is no longer connected via wifi, e.g. someone takes an iPhone or iPad out of the house. iTunes appears to be trying to reconnect to the device, and if it’s selected in iTunes the process will eventually fail after several minutes, but iTunes is unusable while it tries to reconnect to the device.

Wifi sync enabled on all devices.

I had this problem too. I think it may be to do with having the iPhone locked with a passcode. When I removed my passcode, iTunes connected up to it straight away.

I have the same problem, but I do not use a passcode.

I have the same problem, windows 7 64 bit.

All three give the same problem and it’s intermittent. Sometimes, I’ll bring up iTunes and they are showing up correctly, but most of the time I’ll get on my computer in the morning and have to click through a couple dozen message boxes saying my iPhone/iPad wasn’t recognized.

I also have the same problem. No passcode. No USB devices with ?

How does this work? Doesn’t anyone from Apple ever post a solution or at least a «this is a known problem»?

Same issue here — my BIGGEST complaint is that the window pops up over and over and over and over and over again. How hard is it to have the pop-up come up once? I click ok — the pop-up is acknowledged. For the love of all things holy, do some basic checking within the software and determine if the popup has been displayed on the screen. Even better, let me select a box to not warn me again. Frankly, I don’t really care to see this issue over and over. Just sync or don’t sync. Keep a little log somewhere that I can go to if I’m having problems. Perhaps even a little hyperlink to a support KB article with steps for resolution?

To have such beautifully designed devices and user interfaces yet miss the mark on such easy annoyance is just careless!

No. Drop a line to iTunes Feedback or get a free Apple Developer account and submit a bug report.

I think the real problem here is that, for some reason, iTunes isn’t properly handling an iphone that has left the wifi network. I can link up my phone, and sync or not as I wish, and there are no problems. There are no problems for hours. Should I walk out the door and take my phone out of range of my wifi, this error pops up.

The secondary issue is that the message seems to queue up. When I get back within wifi range, the dialog has appeared. Depending on the length of time I have been away, more or less messages will appear. This indicates that it isn’t a fresh popup each time, but popups that have queued up every x minutes. Since I have just arrived home after 48 hours away from home, I have quite a few of these things to click away now.

This seems to be a simple matter to fix in iTunes by apple. Never pop the dialog up at all. Simply place a yellow exclamation point (Use some color, Apple. It’s okay) next to that device, or allow it to dissapear once from the list and popup the message corresponding to this dissapearance. Because iTunes doesn’t seem to be releasing the device when it goes out of range, perhaps there should be some developer attention to the handling of this.

It’s a very frustrating thorn on an otherwise lovely rose, but that sucker just keeps on sticking.

Follow these steps

  1. Check the list on the System Status page. If the box by iOS Device Activation isn’t green, try to activate your iPhone later.
  2. If asked to enter your password as you activate your iPhone, enter the password. (A password prompt means that Activation Lock might be enabled in Find My iPhone.)
  3. Restart your iPhone.
  4. If you’re using a cellular data connection, connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network instead.

If you still can’t activate, here’s how to activate your iPhone through iTunes instead:

  1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Check that your computer has an Internet connection.
  3. Open iTunes on your computer. With the cable that came with your iPhone, connect your iPhone to your computer.
  4. Wait while iTunes detects and activates your iPhone:
    • If iTunes shows, «Set up as New» or «Restore from Backup,» it means that iTunes activated your iPhone.
    • If an error in iTunes says that the SIM card isn’t compatible, contact your carrier.

Anyone help with this? My phone won’t sync — Itunes library gone on phone

Dec 9, 2011 1:35 PM

I am having the same issue with a Mophie Air battery pack.

These were the suggestions that I got from Mophie.

I tried these ideas and it didn’t help

1) Different micro-USB cable sometimes fixes the issue. No idea why.

2) Take your iPhone out of the case, plug it into a dock connector, then completely restore it. Then put your iPhone back into the mophie and immediately plug it in again with the micro USB cable (one that you know works)… it should recognize the iPhone and re-sync.

I tried re installing itunes, didnt work, conected to different usb ports, nothing, tried different cables, still nothing, so activated icloud to back up data before I reset iphone 4 and all of a suddden it synced, very annoying though

I have to kill itunes and restart the application. When connected via USB, all devices are synched properly though. It is just irritating why itunes think the iphone is connected when it was not.

Check that the driver for the iPod/iDevice is installed in Windows. Right-click on My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager. Make sure there are no USB devices with ? or ! next to them.

If there is, try right-clicking on them and uninstalling and then rightclick on any item in the list on the right side -> «Scan for hardware changes» and let it try to find the driver.

Fixed this problem yesterday by this method with a 6th generation iPod shuffle.

I FOUND the solution. It was painful and time consuming but it’s fixed the problem 100%.

I removed all Apple software from my PC. ALL OF IT.

Then I rebooted.

Then I ran CC Cleaner to remove any leftover Apple entries from the registry.

Then reinstalled iTunes and the problem is GONE. All of my problems (with iTunes anyway) are gone.

So it’s a bit radical, but for me it worked. Luckily this doesn’t affect your library, so reinstalling iTunes puts you right back where you were, but everything should now work!

Jan 21, 2012 7:42 AM

Am with Windows, how do you run CC cleaner?

Jan 21, 2012 9:02 AM

Do a google search for cccleaner. It’s a free utility for windows. Run the registry scan and then remove any left over entries for Apple software. Be careful with it though if you let it remove everything it finds for all other programs you could cause more trouble. Just look for any Apple entries and only remove those.

You could try removing the software through the control panel add/remove programs, reboot and then reinstall without messing with cc cleaner. You’d probably be ok with that. If your not familiar with the registry don’t mess with cc cleaner as it can cause more problems than it solves if your not careful.

Jan 21, 2012 11:16 AM

Well. strike that. I thought it worked, but two weeks later, we’r back to the same issue. Every night same error message. Very frustrating. I think I’ll just go back to manually synching. or buy a mac. That’s probably the only real solution to this problem 🙂
