Iphone no response at all

Question: Q: Apple Home App (no response)

I have the Philips Bridge with several bulbs, and they work fine 100% with the Hue App all of the time, when I set up the Home App on the phone though, anywhere from immediately to 1 day, I get this:

The only fix is to remove Home from the App, re-pair the bridge again (which is already still paired, but removing home unpairs it), and setting everything up again. Then, again, anywhere from immediately to 1 day or so, it goes back to the No Response message and nothing works (From Home App, Hue App ALWAYS works, even when I see this «no response» message in Home.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have a very similar issue: In my Home App, all devices (Lutron Caseta lights and Eve Room) are working, except the Lyric Round Thermostat (2nd gen).

The strange thing is that I have seen it respond a few times, however, only for about 10 seconds, and then it goes back to «No Response».

I’ve tried to restart the Thermostat before, but it seems to only work for a few hours or so until it gets back to «No response». I wish I could be more precise in stating when/when not this is working, but it seems very intermittently.

It would be great to hear about others experience and if there is a fix.

I have the exact same problem with my Philip Hue lights. It’ll connect to the bridge very briefly, and I’ll be able to control the lights through Siri or the Home app until about 10-15mins later, all of the devices (my lights and the Philips Hue bridge) will show no response. Of course, I can still control the lights from the Hue app, so I’m pretty sure this is a problem from the Apple side of things. The only way to get them to reconnect through HomeKit again (just for the 10-15mins again) is to restart the bridge and re-pair in the Hue app.

I have read it might be a problem with older routers and problems with MSDN/Bonjour connectivity — but that is not confirmed. Contemplating buying an Airport Extreme to give it a shot, but that’s a big investment just to get my lights to work like the way they’re supposed to anyways.

For all my Hue lights, I sometimes get the ‘No Response’ on my iPad whilst my iPhone is connecting normally. To get good coverage throughout my house, I have a wifi extender, which has a different network name. If my iPad is connected to the extender, that’s when I get the ‘No Response’. If I switch my iPad to the same wifi as the Philips hub, the problem goes away. This answers my problem but not sure it helps others. Suggests to me that the network has a lot to do with it.

Exact same issue. Hue app is 100% reliable, but the Home app seems very buggy and inconsistent

Apple Home is hopelessly broken. Apple’s own forum is rife with users complaining their HomeKit equipment cannot be seen as connected devices under Home. I found this to be true as well. The Apple Home app reports my HomeKit iHome smart plugs as unresponsive, yet the official iHome app can control them just fine — even away from the house.

Making matters even more embarrassing for Apple, Google Assistant on iOS (or Android) allows for easy recognition and voice control for these same iHome HomeKit smart plugs — again, even away from the house. Apple makes great hardware, but is seriously lacking in AI, networking, and web interactivity.

POSSIBE SOLUTION. . I had the same problem. My problem was with DNS filtering with OpenDNS. I changed my router to point at a different DNS and Lyric pops up immediately after the router reboot. I have tried google and my ISPs DNSs with no issues. You could go through the OpenDNS filters to figure out which one is the problem, but I have not spent the time. It is one of the filters between Low and Moderate security.

Hope this helps

I have had similar issues. It’s gotta be an IP issue. I have similar issues with my koogeek plugs. I find pulling them out, so killing the power supply to them and plugging them back in ends up making them work again. Which causes the plug to grab a new IP address from the wireless router. But yes, still works with the hub/app. The koogeek plugs don’t have a hub and they are unresponsive when they go offline in the home app as well. So that leads me to believe it’s how the IPs are given out and how homekit on the device manages that. Not sure if static IPs would even work as you can’t assign them for these devices. Hopefully this gets solved with iOS 11 and subsequent firmware updates.

I’m having the same issue with the Koogeek Smart Light Bulbs. Unplugging them and then plugging them back in fixes the «No Response» issue temporarily. Lately only for a few minutes. I have similar problems with my ecobee3 Smart Thermostat. Removing the faceplate of the thermostat for a few moments before putting it back seems to restore connectivity to Homekit. But unlike Koogeek at least the native ecobee app continues to work when the Home app flakes out. So far the most rock-solid Homekit accessory I have has been the August Smart Lock. That one has only lost connectivity once thus far. Suffice it say I’m NOT impressed with the reliability of Homekit at all. 😠

Aug 15, 2017 11:13 AM

The reason the ecobee and it’s app works and the koogeek do not is because of the hub. The ecobee thermostat acts like a hub. Much like the hue hub works. Any devices that have their own hubs will continue to work. Anything that uses WiFi only or goes through homekit seems to have ip issues and drops off the network. Hence the no response. Restarting the power forces it to grab a new IP address and then it works with homekit. So I still think this issue is IP related and how homekit manages those identifiers. If using MAC addressing this is probably not IP most aching but maybe the IPs are timing out due to the wireless router. Which would explain why people are having inconsistent reporting on this. That’s the only point of failure I can see. And apple hasn’t built in enough robustness to account for this.

Aug 15, 2017 11:39 AM

Not sure if it’s related or not but in my setup I am using an eero wi-fi system with 3 routers. There is supposedly all kinds of «voodoo» going on because it’s a mesh wifi system. I hope there isn’t some sort of incompatibility here because the eero has been rock-solid for me.

Aug 15, 2017 12:04 PM

I just installed an Eero yesterday, and the problem started then. All my HomeKit stuff has been rock-solid until the Eero went in. I’ve emailed their support to see what they say.

Sep 23, 2017 12:41 PM

I can confirm this issue is caused by a poor mDNS implementation (or it being disabled). I had this issue since I purchased Philips Hue («No Reponse» 99% of the time), and recently changed a setting in my router (Ubiquiti Edgerouter X) related to mDNS that has completely solved the issue. Best bet is to get a new router, especially if you have an older one.

Oct 29, 2017 3:58 PM

What mDNS setting change did you do?

Nov 7, 2017 5:58 AM

For the EdgeRouter, I enabled mDNS Repeater setting, but for every router it is different and may not have this same setting.

Is everything still working? I’m also thinking about replacing my airports.

Question: Q: No response at all on startup

Dear all, I am hoping someone can help!

I connected my ATV (purchased Jul 08) just out of the box via HDMI cable to Input 2 on a Pioneer VSXLX60 receivor. The receiver is connected to a Pioneer LX508 HD Plasma TV (which works just fine).

My ATV seems to be powered correctly and seems to be paired with the remote BUT I get absolutely nothing on the TV screen. I have checked all connections and have the TV on Input 2 but nothing.

Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

Many thanks in anticipation. : )

possible reasons are

1) faulty hdmi cable
2) appletv is outputting a resolution that your tv doesn’t support.

do you have a component cable to try so that you can rule out a faulty device ?also, have you tried to connect it to another HDMI input (as you mentioned it was input 2).

Jul 30, 2008 8:51 AM

HDMI in general is still not what it should be, there appears to be an incompatibility between the tv and some switches.

I have mine connected directly to the tv by HDMI. I have the audio from the tv connected to my receiver as well as optical out from the tv to the receiver.

This allows whatever I watch on the tv (including the majority of tv stuff) to be output in stereo and output through the receiver with the receiver doing its best to make it feel like surround sound and retain the ability to control the volume with the tv remote. On the odd occasion I have some 5.1 content on the tv, I switch the input on the receiver and use the optical straight from the tv.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.

I’d try limiting what could be at fault by removing the receiver from the equation and connecting your tv directly to the tv.

Aug 7, 2008 7:29 AM

HDMI cable and TV resolution seem to be OK as when connected direct between ATV and TV, ATV works no problem (but without sound as speakers are connected via receiver). Also have tried receiver output 3 and it makes no difference. Next step I think is to ring Pioneer helpline to see if they can assist (but I hold little hope is it is not a Pioneer to Pioneer connection — we shall see.

Thanks for your help!

After lots of fiddling with my receiver I have finally sorted the problem!! So it wasn’t a cable problem after all. Your solution below was plan B.

Many thanks!! Lindsay

Question: Q: Absolutly no response. at all!

I have no response from my ipod at all! Even when connecting it to a computer or charger, it refuses to show any sign of being alive! I can’t even restore it because the updater doesnt even realise it is there. Resetting doesnt work either.

I do remember feeling a great heat from my ipod when I was out? Maybe this could have something to do with it. The only advice from Apple is to leave it disconnectted from all power for 24 hours. I have a feeling this may not work so, has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to remedy it?

Do what Apple suggests. After that, do you live near an Apple store?

Feb 27, 2006 12:22 PM

Hi! I have the same problem. I talked to the support at Apple, and they told me to send it for a repair, in the Netherlands. I bought it in January, havn´t used it that much and now it´s frozen. It seems it´s a common problem if you look around.
I suppose I didn´t help you with your problem.

I´m thinking of selling my Ipod when I get it back.

Feb 28, 2006 11:08 AM

I have exactly the same problem. Mine is brand new, first few moments I touched and. frozen. Not even recognized as a USB device. Well, it’s even worst than that because my computer can’t even restart with the IPod connected to a USB door. The problem started when the update software requested the IPod to be upgraded to version 1.1. The IPod has restarted and. there is no more IPod for anyone!

There is nothing wrong with the computer, actually I had put some musics into the IPod before this has happened. I guess I’ll wait until the battery is over but I regret I bought this equipment.

Question: Q: An invalid response was received from the device?

For at least the past year, I haven’t been able to sync my phone with iTunes. It either freezes, or, recently, has been giving me an «Invalid response blah blah» error. I made two threads to no response. Does anyone know how to fix this? Can Apple make software that isn’t complete ****?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.2

Posted on Jun 24, 2013 2:31 PM

iTunes cannot connect to the iPhone because an invalid response received from the device

This error occurs when there are problems communicating through USB. This may be resolved by following the steps for errors 13 or 14 above.

Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)

These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:

  1. Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
  2. Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
  3. Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
  4. Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
  5. There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
  6. Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
  7. Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

It may just be your USB cord. Have you tried a different cord? This sounds hardware related and not software related. If you can’t get it to work using a different cord, you may try taking to the Apple Store.

Also, you may even try re-installing iTunes. If you can, get a friend with an iPhone and see if your PC can detect their phone, that would help isolate it to being YOUR device.

Also, if you re-installed Windows recently you may check for OS updates. If it’s Windows 8, you may try running iTunes in Compatibility mode for Windows 7, or run as administrator.

My apologies for just responding to this just now:

I’ve read past articles about my problem, and it offered each of your suggestions to no avail. The problem is, unfortunately, not my computer. And my phone is not and never has been jailbroken. While I am running Windows, I tried my phone on a Mac Book Pro running Lion and another running Snow Leopard, both which gave the invalid response.

Let me elaborate- up until recently, it wouldn’t even give me the error. It would simply freeze. If I was playing music, it would continue to play the music as if nothing was wrong but otherwise the iTunes window was not responsive.

Anyone else having this issue?

Jun 30, 2013 7:46 PM

The issue is not my computer or USB cord, I’ve swapped both various times having tried on several other computers to no avail. Either it’s my phone, or iTunes itself.

Jul 9, 2013 6:45 AM

Apple makes excellent software. The problem is your computer. Which is probably running Windows.

This error usually means there is a USB timing problem in your computer. If you are using a USB hub, don’t. If your computer is not a laptop and you are using a USB port on the front of the computer, switch to a port on the back of the computer. If you have other USB devices connected disconnect all except mouse and keyboard. Reboot your computer just before trying to connect. Disable your antivirus temporarily. Install the latest version of iTunes.

Try a different computer.

It can also mean that your phone is jailbroken, but if that’s the case you can’t get help in an Apple forum.

Jun 24, 2013 2:47 PM

Thank God its working now! As for the answer to your question, read the first para, for attempted solutions, read second one, for the one that worked, read the third one. I’m using an Iphone 4 Factory Unlocked with IOS 6.1.3 (no system change) and iTunes 11.0.4.4 (after the upgrade).

My laptop had a virus because I didnt have any antivirus installed since I thought windows 8’s built in Windows Defender was an antivirus (and well enough at that, but I was mistaken). After installing Kaspersky internet security and scanning my laptop, I removed the virus but still reinstalled windows and removed all my content from the laptop (the docs that mattered) and formatted it. After reinstallation, I reinstalled all the softwares and iTunes, which then asked me for an upgrade and I upgraded to vesion 11.0.4.4 and when I got done with everything and plugged in my phone and it didnt read my phone and gave the error I mentioned before.

I Synced my phone when I had the previous version of iTunes (before the Sep 10 IOS 7 and IPhone 5S / 5C Launch), but the newer version wasnt working. I read here about reinstalling iTunes, the apple mobile support driver and QuickTime (which I did twice), about rebooting my system before using it (which I did), about pausing my internet security/antivirus for a while (which I did againnnn. ), but to no avail, I even went so far as to erase everything on my phone, and still no luck, and I even went and checked for the apple mobile support driver and iphone drivers in my recognized devices when the phone was plugged in and removed the driver and plugged in my phone again for the software to reinstall but no luck.

Then I uninstalled my internet security (antivirus), uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled it (the latest version all along), and then plugged in my phone (without changing any setting or erasing the network settings) and thank God it started working again. But I was ticked at having to download and reinstall my apps on iTunes and my cell again. . . anyway, do tell me it works, i mean, unistalling your internet security, iTunes and then reinstalling them and plugging it in! 🙂 good luck!
