Question: Q: iPhone text message sound not working
My iPhone pro 11 stopped making noise when texts were received. Went to Apple they could not figure it out. Verizon sent me a new phone and it is happening again. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue.

this Isn’t my first watch. Never had an issue until now. We did factory reset and repaired. Even stripped software and reinstalled. Nothing fixed the issue. If watch is off I have no issues. At this point I have been going back and forth with Apple. I’ve only had watch since September and it just started doing this a couple weeks ago. Thought there was error with phone so Verizon replaced that but it still happens

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand you’re unable to hear sound notifications for your text messages. I’ll be happy to help.
I recommend making sure that your iPhone is not in Silent mode. You’ll want to check that the Ring/Silent switch on the upper left side of your iPhone, does not have an orange color displayed. Here’s a helpful article with a visual: How to put your iPhone on vibrate, ring, or silent mode
From there, I suggest to temporarily change the sound notification for the Messages app, restart your iPhone and set the sound notification of your choice. Then, test and see if you continue to experience the same behavior. Here’s how to perform these steps:
- Settings > Notifications > Messages > Sounds > temporarily select a different alert tone.
- Restart your iPhone
- Then, go back to Settings > Notifications > Messages > Sounds > select your preferred alert tone.

Question: Q: No incoming message sound when locked — iPhone 6, iOS 8
I’ve been trying to find an answer to this question, but have yet to resolve it. I have a new iPhone 6 plus. When a new message is received, the screen wakes up and displays the message info, but there is no associated sound. I have a sound set for messages in settings, but it doesn’t matter what I choose, it still does not make a sound when an iMessage or text message comes in. The sounds do work when the phone is unlocked. I do not have Do Not Disturb turned on, the volume switch is turned on and the volume is at the top value.
Is this an iOS 8 bug? I’ve rebooted several times and I’ve done a soft reset.

I have this problem with my iPhone 6 Plus too. It also plagued me on and off with my 4S.
Sometimes I will receive alert tones, other times I won’t. I’m sitting here tonight texting back and forth with my girlfriend. The phone is right next to me, the volume is on full and I don’t have «do not disturb» switched on. Everything is set correctly in the notification settings. When I get a text, sometimes it makes a sound, other times it doesn’t. I have to keep checking my phone and sometimes there will be a new text that neither made a sound or displayed on the lock screen. The same thing happens on and off with emails, voice calls and voice mails.
I use my phone to run my business and obviously this is a huge problem. I’ve missed very important calls and messages and it’s ended up costing me money as well as creating ill feeling between myself and clients. I love my iPhone but to be honest I’m starting to wonder if I made the right choice all those years ago when I switched from BlackBerry. My BlackBerry was absolutely 100% rock solid at these core communication features. Never missed a call or notification. My iPhone is so unreliable with notifications that I’m constantly taking it out of my bag to see if someone’s called or texted me.
I’ve seen this problem reported all over the web and Apple have done nothing to fix it. They cannot be unaware of it. I don’t know whether it’s a software problem or a hardware problem, but they really need to get it sorted out.

Fixing No Notification Sounds On iPhone When Locked
No notification sounds on iPhone when locked: Here’s the fix and explanation why your iPhone is not making any sound notifications every time you get a new message. If your iPhone is locked, a text message coming in alerts on the Apple Watch only. If the iPhone is unlocked, then the notification sound is heard.
This fix applies to all iPhone no notification sound when locked issues, e.g. Text Messages, Mail, SMS, Twitter or Facebook notifications and notification sounds on your iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 or iPhone 12 (Pro). Furthermore, if you got no notifications sounds on your iPhone when locked after updating to iOS 10, iOS 11, iOS 12, iOS 13 or iOS 14.
How message notification sounds are working using both Apple Watch and iPhone
A message notification or a message notifications sound on your different Apple devices will go to your iPhone or your Apple Watch, depending on the device that you’re using in the moment and the settings you had chosen. With Wrist Detection enabled, in order to bring notifications to your attention as soon as possible.
- If your iPhone is unlocked, then you will receive notification alerts and sounds on your iPhone instead of on your Apple Watch.

Note: If you turn off Wrist Detection, you will then not be able to benefit from features including Apple Pay, earning Stand credit and a single unlock after placing your Apple Watch on your wrist.
If you don’t see message notifications on your Apple Watch
When your devices disconnect, your notifications go to your iPhone instead of your Apple Watch. To check your connection, swipe up on the watch face to open Control Center. If your devices are disconnected, you might see , , or . Try to connect your iPhone and Apple Watch.
When your Apple Watch locks or you turn on Do Not Disturb, your notifications go to your iPhone.
- When your Apple Watch is locked, appears on the watch face.
- When Do Not Disturb is on, appears on the watch face. To turn this feature off, swipe up on the watch face, then tap .
For third-party apps, notifications are delivered only if your paired iPhone is also connected to a network.
How to fix ‘No notification sounds on iPhone when locked’
If iPad or iPhone notifications sound not working, meaning if your iPhone (or iPad) does not let you know when you receive an incoming text message (e.g., iMessage), check here how to fix this:
- Make sure that you do not have ‘Do Not Disturb‘ turned on. Check this by going to Settings > Do Not Disturb. Set this to ‘Off‘.
- Make sure that ‘Do Not Disturb‘ is not turned on for any particular contacts. To check this, launch the Messages app where you can see your messages. Does any message have any moon sign? If there is, this means that you enabled ‘Do Not Disturb‘ for that contact. Do disable this, tab ‘Details‘ and turn off ‘Do Not Disturb‘.
- Tap Settings > Notifications > Messages, make sure that ‘Allow Notifications‘ is turned on.
- Your device has a mute switch (ring or silent). On your iPhone, this switch is located on the left side of your device, on your iPad, it is located on the right side of your iPad. Make sure that the mute button isn’t turned on by pushing the ‘Ring / Silent’ switch to the ‘Ring’ position.
- Restart your device by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button until you see the slider then slide the slider.
- Reset your device by holding down the home button and the power button (wake/sleep) until you see the Apple logo.
- Restart the Messages app by forcing the Messages app to close. Simply press the home button twice, find the Messages app and swipe up to close it. Then relaunch again.
- Look at Bluetooth: If you’ve recently connected to a Bluetooth device, sometimes that connection remains and alerts are sent to it rather than your iPhone or iPad. To check, go to Settings > Bluetooth and check if any of your Bluetooth devices are connected and routing sound. If so, disconnect or unpair that Bluetooth device. Alternatively, if you’re not currently using any Bluetooth device, disconnect devices by swiping up Control Center or turn Bluetooth off by going to Settings > Bluetooth > Off.

Question: Q: iPhone 12 Pro Notifications with no sound or alert of any kind
I set up my new phone however I don’t get any notifications to create a sound or haptics when I receive them. I’ve reset my settings after getting frustrated, restarted the phone, made sure to select sounds for each notification, set the notification preview to ‘always’, made sure it’s not on mute and the volume is up yet I can’t get my phone to tell me that anything has come in until I look at the home screen only to find i’ve received a bunch of notifications.
I get calls on the phone just fine but texts, discord, emails, etc. NO notification that anything has been received. I’ve spent hours pouring through the settings and nothing helps.

Nope. No iMessage notifications even with the watch off. Problem came with 14.2. Need fix!

Absolutely having the same issue for text notifications. Other notifications seem to be fine. This is a very painful bug. I’m missing so many important work and personal text message notifications.
Apple chat support said engineers are aware. I have a call with Apple support tomorrow night. This needs to be addressed immediately. I have also submitted feedback on this issue. I know this is Thanksgiving week but Apple needs to fix this.
I have tried everything and nothing has worked. A reboot seems to fix for a short time but then it returns. If I’m using the phone I get notifications, seems to happen when phone is locked/screen off. Not 100% sure on that though. Also not getting the notifications on the AW either.

Turn off your Bluetooth. It’s the only thing that fixes the problem. Carried over from the iPhone 11.

Having same problem with my new iPhone 12 pro. I receive no audible notifications that I have received emails, texts or phone calls.

I spent an hour on the phone with Apple tech support going over settings. He made some inquires when we could not resolve it and it turns out it is a known new issue which the engineers are working to solve. look for an update soon.

I just purchased an iPhone 12 pro and am having the same problem of no audible alerts for texts and no audible voice for Siri even though you can see Siri is working by the active swirl.
None of the fixes above have worked.
We rely on these phones for our businesses.
Very disappointing and considering jumping off the Apple ship unless they have a fix this week.

The following worked for us: Take your Apple Watch off from you hand, then you will get the sound alerts on your iPhone 12.

Settings — Sounds — New Voicemail — select the sound you would like

Thank you — yes, I have selected the sounds I want for calls and texts. I hear the sound when I receive a call but not when I receive a text message.
Jan 24, 2016 8:13 AM
Have you tried to reboot your phone? No data loss is incurred
Hold down off/on and home buttons together till you see and then allow normal boot up
Jan 24, 2016 3:04 PM
I’m having the exact same issue on my iPhone 6 and iPad.
Further, I’m now receiving random alert sounds (like an email sound) but nothing is shown on the lock screen or anywhere else. A few every day. I checked Notifications and all is in order there. Odd and very annoying.
Also, I’ve rebooted, hard reboot, checked all sound settings, etc., no joy there either.
BTW, any idea why Apple support isn’t responding??

BTW, any idea why Apple support isn’t responding??
Because this is not Apple Support. This is a user to user support forum, Apple does not participate here. If you wish to talk to Apple Support, use the contact us link at the bottom of the page titled Contact Us.
The random sounds are probably some notification that you do not have listed in the Notification center to show up there, it could be some notification from an app as well. It would take a bit of searching to locate the actual app to narrow it down. Check through Notifications and see what you may have that is no listed to show on the lock screen and/or in notifications, but does have a sound connected to it.

Hi Chris and thanks for the assist and tip on Apple support.
I have (several times) screened each app under the Settings>Notifications area. Every app that has a sound associated with in (and turned on) also has a Banner/Alert turned on. Any other suggestions appreciated!
Jan 28, 2016 6:50 PM
Do they also have «Show on Lock Screen» turned on? Could it be game or some other app that does not allow settings in Notifications? If it is just the Ding for received email, do you happen to have another iOS device that uses the same email account, like an iPad? I find on occasion that I will hear a received mail on my phone, but if it gets to the iPad first, that I won’t see it on the lock screen of the phone right away. Otherwise, it could be anything using the Ding tone, but does it seem to be random, or at specific times?
Jan 28, 2016 6:55 PM
Yes, show on lock screen is enabled. I just rechecked all of the notifications and they are all set correctly. It is the mail ding that is played randomly a few times during the day. I can’t imagine what other app it could be. I may have to make a Genius Bar appointment.
Jan 28, 2016 10:59 PM
Let me «let» you in on a little secret. Back in iOS 8, I brought this very thing to the attention of Apple, they took it to the Engineers, and never really responset back lke they said they would. What I found was that when I opened certain apps, like FB, InstaG, EBay, etc, etc. the iOS would actually check my email even though I had the setting to only check manually. This was rather annoying to me. My conclusion was the embedded in the software somewhere your email is penalty attached to those apps you probably have your email address to, probably for tracking, etc.
Jan 29, 2016 5:34 AM
It will be interesting to see if it can be determined. I’ve read of others with random sounds appearing from their devices, but it is normally tracked down, to some game, or other app. I remember one where the game had alarms and mail as part of it, kinda like Sims, but that is only an example. Let me know what they say if you go in.

Hi, in my case I had DO DOT DISTURB sign turned ON accidentally ( means when screen is looked no sounds will come)
