Verizon unlocks iPhones for use with Non-US GSM carriers.
Mar 6, 2013 11:55 PM
really? cause i unlocked my iphone and its reading at&t just fine but im just trying to figure out if it would work with virgin mobile..
Mar 7, 2013 12:01 AM
If it (Verizon) works fine with AT&T then it would work with any carrier.
Mar 7, 2013 12:05 AM
so I was wondering iF you where able 2 Fix that problem oF yours, cause im also in that same situation.
Jun 24, 2013 2:27 PM
A Verizon iPhone 5 will work in any compatible GSM carrier.
A Verizon iPhone 4S can not be legitimately unlocked to work on a US carrier other than Verizon. If you’re using a Verizon iPhone 4S on AT&T, it was hacked to unlock it and you can not get help here.
To address the original question, though, no. You can not use a Verizon iPhone on Virgin Mobile in the US. Virgin Mobile in the US is a CDMA carrier (as is Verizon). They will not permit you to bring your own iPhone to their network. If you want to use Virgin, you must purchase a phone made for Virgin Mobile.
Jun 24, 2013 2:32 PM
Tim, A few MVNO carriers will let one’s iPhone 4S run on At&t with the standard Verizon/Sprint carrier unlock. GoRedPocket and Dataroam are two that are known to work.
I’ve personally used Dataroam + Sprint iPhone 4S on At&t in the USA.
Sprint and Verizon have a weird relationship. Sprint contract phones can roam on Verizon, but not vice-versa. So case-in-point, its not possible to bring an iPhone on Verizon to Virgin as it’s a Sprint network.
GusGus, Just sell it and use the proceeds if you want Virgin Mobile service + iPhone.
Or see if T-mobile has options you’re interested in.
But you can also evaluate the MVNO’s I’ve mentioned, you’re free to see what options do work.

Question: Q: Virgin Mobile unlocks iPhones for free?
I currently have an HTC phone on Virgin Mobile, which has given me pretty good service for the monthly rate. I want to upgrade to the iPhone 5s and continue to use Virgin Mobile since it has given me such good service. However, I will be moving out of state next year and am worried that Virgin Mobile will not provide good service there, so just in case I want to be able to switch my iPhone to a different carrier. Virgin Mobile says they will unlock iPhones purchased from them for free ( https://community.virginmobile.com.au/t5/Phones-knowledge-base/How-do-I-unlock-m y-Apple-iPhone/ta-p/80 ), but after doing some research, apparently it is really hard to switch carriers on a Virgin Mobile unlocked iPhone since they use CDMA. Sorry, I am not a techie, so am really unfamiliar to all of this. Will someone explain what that means, and if I would be able to potentially switch carriers?

Virgin Mobile is CDMA. There is no such thing as an unlocked CDMA device.
That Virgin Mobile iPhone will not be able to be used on any other carrier.
Sep 17, 2013 3:48 AM
Several confusing pieces of information here.
First, the link to Virgin Mobile in the first post is for Virgin Mobile Australia. They will unlock their phones if you ask them.
Virgin Mobile USA is a different company (in a different country) and does NOT unlock phones.
Second, the iPhone sold on Virgin Mobile USA does have a SIMM card slot, even though VM network is CDMA. These iPhones are hybrids and have radio circuitry that supports both CDMA (Verizon, Sprint, VM USA), as well as GSM (T-Mobile, AT&T in US, as well as the rest of the world). When activated on Virgin Mobile, phone uses CDMA and the SIMM card is inactive (as well as the circuitry supporting it). However, when you put an active SIMM card (for example, T-Mobile’s), the phone should be able connect to a GSM network. The problem is, this doesn’t work because the SIMM slot is locked and doesn’t allow SIMM cards from other carriers.
Virgin Mobile iPhones are somewhat different from other American carriers, and it appears that there is no unlocking solution for these. I have searched the web thoroughly and haven’t been able to find anyone who would be able to unlock an iPhone sold by Virgin Mobile USA, so that it can be used with a SIMM card of another mobile carrier (domestic or foreign). For iPhones on Verizon, unlocking isn’t even necessary; they are CDMA phones, which means that the CDMA circuitry can only be activated on Verizon (therefore no Sprint or Virgin Mobile), but the SIMM slot is unlocked and can be used with any global carrier. With AT&T and T-Mobile, unlocking is required, since the two are GSM operators which use SIMM cards, so the phone is locked to the carrier. Unlocking can be done, in some cases (if you’ve been a customer long enough) even by the carrier itself, and there are third-party unlocking services out there. Unfortunately, Virgin is the only one where this, for some reason, cannot be done.

Thanks for the information. I still believe there is some way to unlock or use another country carrier. Can you help me identifying if this iphone is unlockable or if i can use it in Mexico?:
Ive heard of R-SIM, will it be compatible with that iphone? Ive also heard about many sites where you pay and give your IMEI to od the factory unlock.
I hpoe you can help me, thank you
Apr 10, 2014 7:55 AM
The R-SIM is illegal in every country on the planet.
The auction indicates that phone is for Virgin Mobile in the US. Virgin Mobile in the US does NOT offer unlocking at all.
You will not be able to use that phone on any carrier other than Virgin Mobile in the US.
Apr 10, 2014 8:30 AM
Vasick and KiltedTim are right.
I’m currently a VirginMobile USA user and bought the 4S from Virgin, and they (just like Sprint) have CDMA phones and will not unlock them. The iPhone 4S has a GSM functionality but with Sprint and Virgin, it is useless. There may be other ways to unlock the phone, but it is considered illegal.
If you want a truly unlocked phone, go with the 5S, either ask for Verizon device-only or go unlocked Sim-free. More carriers like T-Mobile are starting to catch on to providing service for the iPhone 5S off-contract. When I signed up with Virgin, it was the only provider to offer the iPhone off-contract. But even after spending 400$ on the device, it is still not really mine to own since I cannot use it with any other service.
Hope this helps, and sorry to resurrect the thread.

i was in a similar position with my Virgin Mobile USA CDMA 4S IPhone. Basically when I was outside of the U.S. It was an expensive paperweight.
Until I noticed that I could move the 12 month old IPhone to ting.com. There an MVNO in the states. You can sign up with an Amazon account which means you don’t need a U.S. address. So signed up with them, programmed the phone via wifi then requested an international SIM unlock for FREE, they contact sprint on your behalf, whitelist the phone for all SIM’s except US SIM’s.
All you will pay is the basic line rental of $6 per month until you cancel the service.
SO now it’s possible to unlock your IPhone 4S 🙂

Apple has revealed its latest iPhone range to the world’s waiting eyes, and you get the iPhone 11 series on Virgin Mobile
Apple iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, from £33
The cloak of secrecy has been lifted, because Apple has finally revealed its latest batch of remarkable smartphones: the iPhone 11, the iPhone Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which are available from Virgin Mobile. And boy, remarkable is a staggering understatement.
The new range is Apple’s best yet, featuring more cameras than ever (including three on the back of the Pro models), a new batch of dazzling colours and a processor that has been updated to be faster while consuming less power. That means you can do more and charge less!
Virgin Media customers can get the iPhone 11 on Virgin Mobile’s exclusive Truly Unlimited plan – meaning unlimited data, minutes and texts.
Read on to find out more about the high-tech features and capabilities onboard these new phones.
Never take a bad photo
All three models have the all-new dual-camera system, containing the latest Ultra Wide camera that lets you capture four times more action, even if it’s outside the frame. Night mode brightens your shots automatically in low light, without the need for a flash, while portrait mode and Smart HDR make everyone look insta-ready – #NoFilterNeeded.
Three is the magic number
The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max deliver the same Wide and Ultra Wide cameras as standard, but these premium models also give you a third Telephoto camera. This triple-threat snapping system delivers a combined four times optical zoom range for more framing options than Rankin and David Bailey combined.
Slow-mo your selfie
Banish boring selfies to the early noughties. Now, it’s all about the slofie. Thanks to the 12MP TrueDepth camera, you can slow down your selfie, because everything looks cooler in slow-mo (just ask the Reservoir Dogs gang). Plus, if don’t just want your face in frame, turn your iPhone 11 to landscape mode and it will automatically zoom out to fit more in.
Videos? Make movies instead
With all these fancy cameras, your videos are naturally going to be lit. All of the models (and all of their cameras) shoot in ultra-crisp 4K video at 60fps. And with the Ultra Wide camera, you can snap four times more action, so it’s perfect for capturing your cat chasing a leaf outside. Plus, when you zoom in, the audio zooms too. Meow!
Water clever feature
The iPhone 11 is water-resistant up to two metres for up to 30 minutes – double the depth the iPhone XR can withstand, while the iPhone 11 Pro gives you up to four metres for up to 30 minutes. The phones also have the toughest glass used in a smartphone, so they are absolutely made for the trials of modern life.
All-day battery life
Your days of walking around looking for plug sockets are over. But when your phone does run out of juice, you can charge it up in double-quick time. Plus, the premium models have even more battery power. The Pro Max has the longest battery life ever in an iPhone, with up to five hours more than the iPhone Xs Max, while the Pro gives you up to four hours more than the iPhone Xs.
Choose your style
Remember when phones only came in black… or really dark grey? Not anymore! Make a splash with one of the iPhone 11’s six dazzling colours (purple, yellow, red, green, black and white), or choose from four glorious finishes (gold, space grey, silver and midnight green) for the Pro models. Whatever you choose, you’ll have the best finish since Manchester City v Spurs in the Champions League.
And there’s plenty more
There’s so much crammed into these phones, including Wireless Charging, faster Wi-Fi (up to 38 per cent faster with Wi-Fi 6), Face ID to unlock your phone at a glance and a range of storage capacity options and screen sizes.
Find out more about the iPhones and the rest of the Apple range of phones on Virgin Mobile right here. You can also order the new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.
There’s even more with Virgin Mobile…
On Virgin Mobile, customers can enjoy a host of benefits with their sparkling new iPhone, including 99% 4G population coverage, superfast 4G speeds and free WiFi on your mobile at more than 3.5 million hotspots across the UK. You can also change your data allowance up or down every month.
And remember!
You can opt to add spending caps to your contract to ensure that no nasty surprises make their way into your bill, helping you take control of costs outside your mobile plan’s allowance. To add an extra layer of reassurance, you’ll receive an SMS alert when you approach your spending cap, and another if your limit is reached.

If you want to upgrade your iPhone without the hassle of going to a store, Sprint will soon bring the phone to you and set up the phone there. Virgin Mobile drops complete iPhone lineup from its online store
— Feb. 20th 2015 6:38 am PT
Since the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last fall, we’ve noticed that Sprint subsidiary Virgin Mobile USA has offered limited-to-no stock on its iPhone lineup with “out of stock” messages on each of their iOS device and seemingly no plans to replenish inventory. Specifically, the pre-paid carrier went head first into the holiday season without any iPhone inventory for shoppers.
Virgin later confirmed that it had no specific plans to carry the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus at the time, and now the prepaid carrier has completely scrubbed the entire iPhone lineup from its online store. expand full story

— Jun. 27th 2013 12:25 pm PT
Update: The no-contract, Virgin Mobile iPhone 5 and promotional discounts are now live on RadioShack’s website.
We reported last week that the iPhone 5 would be coming to Virgin Mobile tomorrow starting at $549.99 on its usual no-contract, $30/month unlimited plans. RadioShack will be one of the first to carry the device and is also planning to offer a number of promotional discounts to celebrate the launch.
RadioShack will start carrying the Virgin Mobile iPhone 5 tomorrow both online and in-store for $549.99 (that’s for the 16GB model), but will also be offering $50 for eligible trade-ins until the end of next month. On top of the same $50 trade-in for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, the retailer is also slashing prices on those two devices to $399.99 and $299.99 until July 6th.

iPhone 5 coming to Virgin Mobile next Friday for $549.99 with unlimited plans starting at $30/month
— Jun. 21st 2013 5:41 am PT
We’ve just received word that Virgin Mobile will be carrying the iPhone 5 next week on its Beyond Talk plans with unlimited 3G/4G LTE data and messaging starting at $35/month (with $5 discount for auto-payments).
The 16GB iPhone $549.99 pricing plan + $30/month for unlimited data is extremely competitive with what’s out there but this comes late in the update cycle. Virgin, a pre-paid division of Sprint which also uses the carrier’s CDMA 3G and LTE 4G networks, will also offer the 32GB and 64GB versions of the iPhone for $649.99 and $749.99 respectively.
For instance, a 16GB iPhone 5 on the $30/month plan will cost $360+$550=$910 over a year or +$360= $1270 over 2 years.
Virgin Mobile USA will launch the iPhone 5 on Friday, 6/28/12 on its Beyond Talk plans, with unlimited 3G/4G LTE data and messaging* starting at $35 per month but customers can also receive a $5 per-month plan discount when they register and sign up for automatic monthly payments [“Auto Pay”] with a credit card, debit card or PayPal account, making the iPhone 5 available on Virgin Mobile for as low as $30 per month**.

Canadian Bell and Virgin Mobile customers can now unlock any model iPhone…for $75
— Nov. 26th 2012 6:03 pm PT
Canadian iPhone users can now unlock their iPhone on Bell and Virgin Mobile for $75. Mobile Syrup obtained more information on a previous report and discovered that Bell and Virgin’s unlocking programs are available for all Bell and Virgin iPhones, but a customer must not be on contract, must be a post-paid Bell or Virgin customer, and must pay a one-time $75 fee. The unlocking program began today, according to the leaked documents, and it can be completed by contacting Bell’s Credit & Prevention line or Virgin Care. The unlocking program will be “launched in a phased approached,” while “the next Phase in 2013″ will come where they will “expand the eligibility guidelines.”
Before this month, Canadian iPhone users could only unlock their iPhones via TELUS ($35), Rogers ($50), and Fido ($50), according to Apple’s support page. Unlocking the iPhone allows customers to use a SIM card from any carrier with the same bands, allowing for easy mobile travel around the world. Pretty cool, eh?

Virgin Mobile will open 10 Chicago stores tomorrow to market newly added iPhone
Élyse Betters — Jun. 28th 2012 8:20 am PT
Virgin Mobile plans to open 10 retail stores tomorrow in Chicago to make the most of the iPhone’s launch on its pay-as-you-go service. The Sprint Nextel Corp.-owned business is the second U.S. prepaid carrier to offer the iPhone, after Leap Wireless International Inc., and its new Windy City stores are a prime opportunity to market—and capitalize on— the iOS smartphone.
The new stores also mark a strategy shift for Virgin, which has previously relied on retailers such as RadioShack Corp. and Best Buy Co. to market its service, said Jeff Auman, a vice president at the carrier.
[…] The carrier will begin selling the iPhone online today, with the stores opening tomorrow. The 10 Chicago outlets could lead to a national rollout, the company said.
Virgin offers the iPhone 4S for $649, while the iPhone 4 sells for $549, with monthly plans starting at $30 with a $5 discount is available for customers who enroll in automatic monthly payments.

Want unlimited data on your iPhone 5? Sprint will hook you up mid-October
— Sep. 9th 2011 7:41 am PT
Bloomberg (adds to the) reports that Sprint will differentiate itself from AT&T and Verizon iPhone offers by offering a truly unlimited plan.
Sprint, the third-largest U.S. wireless carrier, plans to begin selling the device in mid-October under a deal with Apple for the next model, the iPhone 5, said the people, who wouldn’t be identified because the plans aren’t public. Becoming the country’s only operator to offer the device with unlimited data service for a flat fee may help Sprint draw customers from AT&T and Verizon Wireless, which already carry the phone, they said.
Sprint, probably because it has to, offers reasonable plans without data capping or tiers. Its subsidiary Virgin Mobile would be even better with its $35-$55 unlimited plans.

Rumored to be starting in the first week of October, we’ve heard that AT&T will start throttling the data speeds of the network’s top data hogs. As Verizon (PDF) and Virgin have recently done, AT&T will be adopting a similar plan to try to curb the problem of data congestion and overall network issues that have hurt its 3G network’s performance since the onset of the iPhone.
AT&T will also be releasing its first LTE devices later this year.
We’ve heard that AT&T will rejigger its insurance structure that week as well, which makes us think a certain high profile device may be launching on or around that time.
The throttling plan will work like the others’. The heaviest users will see significant speed decreases for one billing cycle once they go over a threshold of data (we’re guessing 2-4GB?). These heavy users will still be able to access the network, but at a much slower speed. At the start of the next billing cycle, their speeds will return to normal. We don’t have numbers for AT&T’s throttle speeds but Virgin takes you down to 256Kb/s once you’ve reached their 2.5GB limit (not too bad actually – sometimes we’re happy to get 256kbs). Interestingly, Virgin’s throttle also will also be implemented in the first week of October which may indicate that they’ll be carrying a certain high profile mobile device as well.
Frankly, throttling isn’t so bad if done fairly. It is a good way to penalize heavy users but without them having to worry about overage charges. For high end users, however, it wold make sense for AT&T to add the ability to buy more regular speed data like they do now… expand full story

Virgin hikes plans and introduces throttling, just in time for an iPhone?

We’ve discussed the next generation ‘value-tier’ iPhone. But we weren’t the first. Apple COO Tim Cook was.
While Tim stopped short of explicitly stating that Apple would pursue a lower price iPhone, he did state that Apple was working hard to “figure out” the prepaid market and that Apple didn’t want its products to be “just for the rich,” but “for everyone”; he also stated that Apple “understood price is big factor in the prepaid market” and that the company was “not ceding any market.” ….He further noted that the handset distribution model was poorly constructed and that Apple would look to “innovate” and do “clever” things in addressing that market.
That was the WSJ tapping the line (har) of Bernstein Research’s Toni Sacconaghi in February.
Today, Virgin announced that it was hiking its data plans to $35/month for unlimited data which coincides with the launch of a big Android phone. But more interesting, to me anyway, was that Virgin is changing its ‘unlimited’ to ‘unlimited with throttling at 2.5GB’ in…October.
Beginning in October 2011, Virgin Mobile will also move to reduce data speeds when a customer’s data usage exceeds 2.5GB in a month but still provide unlimited 3G access without a contract, usage cap, overage or activation fees. Based on current usage patterns, fewer than 3 percent of Virgin Mobile USA customers use more than 2.5GB of data usage per month. After reaching this level, this minority of customers may experience slower page loads, file downloads and streaming media. When a customer’s next month begins, the data usage meter starts back at zero with unlimited 3G speeds.
If Apple was going to do a pre-paid carrier in the US, it would certainly be Virgin (vs. Cricket, US Cellular, Boost). If Virgin did do iPhone, they’d certainly want to put measures in place to prevent the iPhone from killing its network.
We got word yesterday that AT&T was changing its iPhone insurance plans on October 4th, perhaps signaling some new models. With what we had, we’d have given the info about a 25% shot of being legitimate. However, since then, we’ve heard that a big commotion was made about that information being made public. Based on that and today’s Virgin announcement, we’re thinking the probability of that date being right has increased significantly. expand full story
