If you can’t connect your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad to your Mac

Try these steps to resolve issues with your Magic accessories.

Turn the device off and on

Magic Mouse has a switch on the bottom of the device, and Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad have a switch on the back edge of the device. Slide the switch to turn off the device (no green is visible), then slide the switch back to turn on the device (green becomes visible).

Earlier Apple Wireless Keyboard and Magic Trackpad models have a power button on the right side of the device. Hold the button until the green LED on the top of the device turns off, then press the button again until you see the green LED to turn the device on.

Make sure Bluetooth is turned on

Using your Mac notebook’s built-in trackpad or a USB mouse, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth. Make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.

If the Bluetooth icon doesn’t appear, or if the menu bar status continues to indicate that Bluetooth is off, restart your computer and then try to turn Bluetooth on again.

Connect the Lightning cable

Connect your wireless accessory to your Mac with the Lightning to USB Cable or USB-C to Lightning Cable, wait 1 minute, then disconnect the cable. This pairs the accessory with your Mac and charges the built-in battery. To check your accessory’s charge level, click the Control Center icon in the menu bar, then click Bluetooth.

Earlier models don’t use a Lightning cable for charging, but have batteries that you replace. Learn how to pair those devices with your Mac.

Check for wireless interference

If your accessory won’t stay connected wirelessly, there might be interference with other wireless devices. Learn how to resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference.

Set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad with your Mac

If your Apple wireless devices came with a new iMac, turn the devices on to begin using them. If you bought the devices separately or if you need to pair them with your Mac again, follow these steps.

Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad work wirelessly with your Mac via Bluetooth when they’re paired and turned on.

If your devices came with a new iMac, they’re already paired with the computer. Just turn them on when you first turn on your Mac. To make sure that your device is turned on, check its power switch. If green is visible, the device is on.

If you bought your devices separately — or if they’ve become unpaired from your Mac — follow the steps below to pair them.

How to set up your wireless device

Follow these steps to set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad:

1. Connect a Lightning to USB Cable 1 or a USB-C to Lightning Cable to the Lightning port on the device 2 and connect the other end of the cable to your Mac.
2. Make sure that the device’s power switch is in the ON position. (Green is visible under the switch when the device is on.)
3. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth to open the Bluetooth preferences window. When the device pairs with your Mac, it appears in the list of devices.
4. Check the Bluetooth preferences window to see your device’s charge level. When the device is charged, unplug it for wireless use.

1. If your Bluetooth device came with an iMac, a Lightning to USB cable was also included in the box.
2. Magic Mouse can’t be used while connected to the cable.

If your device won’t connect

If you’re unable to connect your device, learn what to do.

How to set up earlier Apple wireless devices

If your Apple wireless device doesn’t have a Lightning port, use a wired mouse or trackpad — or the built-in trackpad if you’re using a Mac notebook — then follow these steps to set up your earlier Apple wireless devices (such as the Apple Wireless Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad):

1. Turn on your device.
2. Wait until your device’s LED starts blinking, which means that it’s in Discoverable Mode. (If the LED is on but not blinking, your device is already paired with another host. To unpair it, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth. Hover the pointer over the device you want to remove, then click the button that appears next to the device’s name. Turn the device off, then start again at step 1.)
3. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth.
4. Wait while your Mac searches for your device. When your device appears in Bluetooth preferences, click Pair 1 .

1. Apple Wireless Keyboard requires the passcode that appears on your Mac. Enter the 8-digit passcode on the keyboard, then press Return. Earlier models of Apple Wireless Mouse or Apple Magic Trackpad will connect automatically or show a dialog. If you see a dialog, click Pair or press Return.

Question: Q: wireless keyboard not connecting to windows 10

I installed windows 10 with bootcamp on a late 2013 iMac. I am unable to get it to use my wireless trackpad and wireless keyboard. Some how it is reading my old magic mouse and that seems to work okay. It reads a bluetooth device is trying to connect, but I just can’t get the devices to work with windows 10. What can I do to fix this issue?

I just had this same problem. Here’s how I fixed it:

• In Windows 10’s bluetooth settings (can be found in system tray), click on the icon and then click «Add Bluetooth Device».
• Then, on the Apple Wireless Keyboard, hold down Command + W, while Windows is searching for bluetooth devices.
• Then (hopefully) after it finds your Keyboard, it will want to pair with it. Follow the on screen prompts and eventually you will have to type in a pairing code.
• Type in this code and hit Return.
• Your Keyboard should successfully pair with Windows 10 via the Mac’s Bluetooth

I’m able to get my Bluetooth Apple Keyboard and mouse to connect and work in Windows 10, but I have 1 issues.

1st Every time I reboot Windows 10 I lose the connection and have to re-pair them.

2nd They do not work before you get into the actual OS (either Mac or Windows).

I have a dual booth system set up with Boot Camp and when I hold the option key to choose what OS I want to booth into the Bluetooth mouse does not work.

It makes it very hard to choose an OS to boot to.

To get my Apple bluetooth keyboard (older three-AA battery generation) to work with Windows 10, I followed

the instructions in the following link. What it adds to the instructions above 1) are steps to remove the actual device driver for the wireless keyboard using Device Manager and then rebooting (use advanced device uninstall which gives you the driver removal option), and 2) the warning that Windows bluetooth pairing of Apple keyboard is almost futile and you need to be very persistent. After following this process, my keyboard remains paired in Windows after reboot and I can use it to enter my password. But because the Apple drivers are now not installed for the keyboard under Windows, I cannot CTRL-ALT-DEL for logon from the wireless keyboard — I can live with doing that on the laptop keyboard, but that doesn’t help people with Minis, iMacs, or Pros.

Question: Q: How to switch the keyboard language when using a bluetooth keyboard?

When using the on-screen keyboard I have the little globe to switch languages, but when using a bluetooth keyboard the on-screen keyboard is hiden.

I want to be able to write in different languages using the bluetooth keyboard, also the auto-correct gets in the way if I write in a different language than english and it tries to change the words to the closest similar english word.

Try using the standard shortcuts for keyboard layout switching, like Apple/command + space.

I use an apple bluetooth keyboard with my iPhone 4. What works to switch between languages is to hold down shift + command + space all at the same time. That causes the menu of installed language options there are on the phone to appear on the phone’s display. I can then touch the option I want on the phone screen to select it, and begin typing in that language by using the bluetooth keyboard.

Do you really need to touch the screen? The standard shortcuts (command + space, shift + command + space) should let you switch layouts without doing that.

I see that now Tom, I’m sorry to confuse things. I think my problem might have been that I had the keyboard too far away from the phone, and so when I looked back from the keyboard to the phone, the screen indication of the languages had already disappeared from the screen. Because I have more than one language with Roman characters installed, I thought that no change was occurring from that sequence of commands, since I wasn’t getting Korean. But now that I see your correction, and watch the screen closely, I see that you’re right. I apologize. (And of course, I’m grateful to have a simpler way of switching languages!)

I’m tested this commands but I not have success (cmd+spacebar, cmd+spacebar+shif, ctrl+shift+spacebar and ctrl+spacebar).

I use the Eject button and select the language on screen. Maybe this help you.

Up to iOS 8.x.x Cmd+Space or a dedicated shortcut on my Logitech Type + keyboard for iPad Air 2 used to change the keyboard layout.

From iOS 9.0 and above all that changed.

The new shortcut for changing the keyboard language switched to Ctrl+Space or Shift+Ctr+Space if you have more than two and you want to switch in backward direction, but now all new kind of troubles arised.

The old shortcut on the keyboard now just calls «search» and so does the dedicated «search» button too, so now I have two «search» buttons on the keyboard. Two is better than one you may say!

Also another side effect of this, is that now even Shift by itself changes the language too!!

So you can’t type a word starting with a capital letter after switching language, or at least, not until the list of languages disappears from the screen.

In the early iOS 9 versions, so did Cmd, Alt and Ctrl along with Shift while the list of keyboads was visible.

On later iOS 9 and iOS 10 versions this was narrowed down only to the Shift key, but the behaviour changed slightly from version to version.

In the late iOS 9 versions Shift would keep cycling through keyboards, and it would reset the timer for showing the list of keyboards on screen, so if you kept pressing within 1 sec the shift key, you could be cycling forever.

iOS 10.1 changed that behavior (not fixed) and now if I was pressing the left Shift I would always select one language, while the right Shift would always Select the other (if I had three, it would always go to the top or the bottom one).

iOS 10.2 beta 1 and 2 kept that behaviour and now i’m on iOS beta 3 and both Shifts are again cycling though all the languages!

And all the above are also tested with my Apple A1314 bluetooth keyboard too, so it’s not a Logitech hardware keyboard specific series of bugs.

Please just make the keyboard behave exactly as it does on a Mac and it will be just perfect!
