Amazon in June 2014 unveiled its long-rumored — we’re talking years here — smartphone. Dubbed the Fire Phone (you’ll recall that Amazon’s tablet is the «Kindle Fire»), it’s got glass on both sides, which we haven’t seen since the LG Optimus G and Nexus 4 in late 2012. It has a metal frame with rubber trim, and most importantly a 4.7-inch (720 x 1280 resolution) IPS LCD display.

Internals include a Snapdragon 800 quad-core 2.2GHz CPU, 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS). And Amazon’s providing free, unlimited image storing for every photo you take as well.

But Fire Phone really gets interesting when it comes to software and features. It runs Amazon’s Android-based Fire OS 3.5 software, with a UI that looks similar to the company’s Fire tablets but adapted for the smaller screen. As you’d expect, the Fire Phone is content-rich, with support for Amazon’s streaming ecosystems, and second-screen functionality through X Ray, giving you more info on what you’re watching on the big screen.

The Amazon Fire Phone also introduces Firefly, described as «visual search on steroids.» Firefly can recognize barcodes, box art, QR codes, URLs and even TV audio, and is built on the Amazon Web Services platform. You can scan just about anything with Firefly and have it saved to your history to reference later, or export out to third-party apps that have integrated with the Firefly SDK.

And last but not least, Dynamic Perspective brings 3D effects to the Fire Phone, using an array of sensors (including four cameras and infrared lights) to work out where your face is and the angle at which the device is being held. This allows perspective effects to be brought into the phone’s apps and UI, including (but not limited to) the built-in maps app and Kindle books app.

The Amazon Fire Phone failed to ever gain traction, and Amazon dropped the price as low a $130 before laying off hundreds of employees from their hardware division.

На Fire Phone всё работает заметно лучше, но насколько идея приживётся — сказать сложно. Обычное смахивание работает не хуже, но открытие левой или правой панели с помощью поворота устройства выглядит тоже вполне естественно и удобно. Однако сразу сказать сложно, насколько удобно будет устройство, которое может выводить на экран новые панели просто из-за поворота (для этого надо подольше попользоваться аппаратом, оценив плюсы и минусы в различных обстоятельствах).

Тыльная камера смартфона активно используется для функции Firefly: технология позволяет идентифицировать товары и продукты вокруг простым наведением на них камеры. Amazon хочет, чтобы пользователи активнее применяли Firefly, а потому для её вызова предусмотрена отдельная аппаратная клавиша.

Технология позволяет на основе сделанной фотографии или записанного звука находить фильмы, музыку, информацию о живописной картине и так далее. Это явно не понравится розничным сетям: пользователи получают в свои руки очень простой и лёгкий способ сравнить цены в своём местном магазине с ценами в Amazon (обычно интернет-гигант окажется в выигрыше). Никогда раньше не было лучше устройства, которое создано для импульсивных покупок — в этом его и плюсы, и минусы.

Но и сама по себе камера вполне неплоха. Она сопоставима по качеству с теми, что используются в iPhone 5S и Samsung Galaxy S5. Краткое знакомство с ней говорит о том, что смартфон в условиях недостаточной освещённости может делать неплохие резкие фотографии с хорошим балансом белого. По крайней мере, камера не хуже тех, что используются в большинстве флагманских смартфонов сегодня, пусть и не является лидером.

Что касается ОС, то речь идёт о слегка модифицированной версии Fire OS, используемой на планшетах Amazon уже несколько лет. Интерфейс активно использует графику, достаточно прост и понятен большинству пользователей (хотя продвинутые пользователи наверняка хотели бы чего-то большего).

Amazon добавила в ОС возможность вызова контекстного меню наклоном влево или вправо. В почтовом клиенте вызывается базовая навигация и список всех последних прикреплений. На домашнем экране появляется универсальная навигация и погода. Всё это можно вызвать с помощью быстрого наклона, но кому-то покажется проще простое смахивание. Это тревожно — одна из ключевых функций аппарата не выглядит необходимой.

Преимущества кажутся сомнительными и в других примерах использования функции динамической перспективы. Интересно выглядит на демонстрации наклон карты, позволяющий увидеть подписи, но в реальности пальцы всегда рядом с экраном, так что можно использовать привычные прикосновения. Экран блокировки тоже привлекателен, но после нескольких минут уже сложно сказать, какие функциональные преимущества в нём кроются. С другой стороны, в играх добавление динамической перспективы выглядит наиболее уместно и предоставляет новые способы взаимодействия с виртуальным миром.

Корпус смартфона ощущается крепким и качественным, хотя он несколько грубоватый и тяжёлый, при этом он не создаёт впечатления премиум-аппарата, как, например, HTC One. Устройство с двух сторон покрыто эконом Gorilla Glass и имеет усиленные грани. Он явно создан с прицелом на прочность и относительную компактность — диагональ дисплея в 4,7 дюйма кажется по сегодняшним меркам идеальной для Android-смартфона.
