[Update: LG G8 too] LG is taking advantage of Android 10’s underused desktop mode

The ability to carry a single device around but use it in multiple ways is a dream for many, and over the past few years, it’s become a reality.

Not many know that Android 10 has been building out a basic “desktop mode” that not many use, but LG is taking advantage of it as it updates devices.

Spotted by Juan Carlos Bagnell and further highlighted by XDA-Developers, LG is adding Android’s desktop mode to some of its past smartphones. The LG V50 ThinQ, for example, was recently updated to Android 10, and it brings the underused feature along with it. Right now, we’re not sure whether or not the LG G8 or LG G7 One, both of which were updated to 10, also offer this functionality.

Update 1/23: Since this article was published, we received a tip confirming that the LG G8 ThinQ does, in fact, also support desktop mode. Running Android 10 on the Sprint variant, our tipster was able to get desktop mode running and confirmed it was the exact same version pictured below. Good news for G8 owners!

What is Android’s desktop mode? If you’ve heard of Samsung’s DeX feature, this is essentially a built-in version of that. When plugging an Android phone with this feature into a monitor via an HDMI adapter, the phone asks you to switch to desktop mode. That desktop mode is better optimized for larger displays with resizable windows and a different layout for apps as the image below shows.

It’s important to note that LG is actually putting effort into cleaning up Android’s desktop mode and making it more user-friendly. The native Android feature is still in its early stages, but LG has made modifications to improve it.

What does LG have in store for desktop mode? Apparently, quite a lot. Android Police’s David Ruddock posted on Twitter that he’s heard LG is planning to bundle a monitor with a future V-Series smartphone to take advantage of desktop mode.

It’s far too early to treat that as anything set in stone, but if true, it’s definitely an interesting idea for LG. After all, the company is betting on “wow factor” to turn around its flailing smartphone division. Just remember to take things with a pinch of salt. Plans can change quickly.

What I have heard is that LG plans – in 2021 – to release the V70 (or whatever they call it) and bundle it with a large display (10″+) so it can act as a tablet or laptop. Unclear if phone physically docks or if this is a wireless thing. Keyboard accessory seems likely.

The QuickMemo+ feature allows you to capture screen shots and use them to create memos. You can also insert a reminder, location information, image, video, and audio.

Note: Some Settings, Menus, or Icons may differ from that of your device depending on your software version and wireless service provider.

The following options are available when editing a memo:

Allows you to undo previous actions.

Allows you to redo previous actions.

Allows you to edit the text, its color and its alignment.

Allows you to draw on the memo.

Allows you to erase edits using the pen tool.

Allows you to cut, rotate, and resize edits using the pen tool.

Save the memo in QuickMemo+.

Touch to access more options.

Allows you to set a reminder notification for an event.

Allows you to insert weather information.

Allows you to add location information.

From the Home screen, tap Apps > QuickMemo+ > tap to create a new memo.

Allows you to edit the text, its color and its alignment.

Options to edit the text are shown above the keyboard.

Tap on the checkbox to add a line through the text.

Press and hold the tabs to drag an item up and down on the list.

Align text to the left of the screen.

Align text to the center of the screen.

Align text to the right of the screen.

Changes the color of the text (The color of the square indicates the color of the text).

Allows you to draw on the memo.

Tap Draw a second time to select from 4 different textures type, select a thickness, transparency, and color.

Note: Tap a drawing utensil to select it.

Note: The color of the Draw icon indicates the color selected, the Icon also changes based on the utensil selected.

Allows you to erase edits using the pen tool.

Tap Erase a second time to select the thickness of the eraser.

Only erases lines drawn with the draw tool, does not erase pictures or text.

Use your finger to draw a line around the object you wish to cut (seen by the dotted line).

Resize the selected image: Tap and drag the blue square / rhombus inwards to shrink and outwards to stretch.

Move the selected area: Press and hold on the highlighted area, drag your finger to where you wish to move the object.

Rotate selected area: Tap and press and hold on the highlighted area, drag your finger in a circular motion to rotate the selected area.

Delete selected area: Tap to delete selected area.

To Add a Reminder, Weather, and Location

At the bottom of the memo:

Tap , then select a Time reminder or Location reminder.
Tap to sync current weather information.
Tap to sync and add current location information.

Note: An active data session is required to add weather and location information.

What device do you have?

You can check your TV’s operating system from All Settings> General > About this TV > TV Information menu on your TV. Press the Settings button on the remote control.

Press the Home button on the remote control and launch the «Set Up TV for the Google Assistant» app on your TV. Follow the setup guide on your TV to complete TV registration.

※ Please create a LG Account from Settings > General > Account Management in the LG TV or from the LG ThinQ mobile app.

First, you need two apps. Download the LG ThinQ & Google Home app from Google Play.

How to Download LG ThinQ

From your HOME screen, select GOOGLE PLAY app to launch the Google’s Play Store where you can download LG ThinQ

Search for LG ThinQ on the Play Store

Choose the INSTALL button.

Note: This app will download faster on a Wi-Fi connection.

Once installed, select OPEN, follow the welcome prompts and select.

Agree to the permissions prompt by selecting ALLOW ThinQ to access your location, make calls and save images.

The app is now finally installed; the next step below is about how to start using the app.

How to Connect Wi-Fi products:

Note that 5 GHz networks may not be supported.

Ensure the appliance is located close to the router with no obstacles between them.

Ensure the Wi-Fi network name does not contain Non-English or special characters e.g «[!@#$%^&*()_+?><|\]".

Set the «SWITCH TO MOBILE DATA» option to OFF on your mobile phone before adding your appliance.

How to use Tag on Feature:

Turn on the NFC function on your mobile phone and turn the «READ/WRITE» and «P2P RECEIVING»

to ON.

The NFC antenna position may vary depending on the device.

How to add your <> to LG ThinQ

From LG ThinQ app, Choose the + button to add your television.

Select your TV from the list of products. Note, the TV will not be listed on the dashboard of your LG ThinQ app. This is normal.

Press the HOME button on the remote control and launch «SETUP TV for Google Assistant» app on your TV.

Follow the setup guide on your TV to complete the TV registration.

Choose the + button to add your <> .

Ensure there are no obstacles between your router and the appliance.

Select your <> from the product list.

Does your <> have a Tag On logo?

If you have Tag On, follow the steps on how to use Tag On feature by selecting Location Guide from your mobile app.

Does your <> have a ThinQ logo?

Does your <> have a Smart Diagnosis logo? Select «Location Guide» on your mobile app for more information.

Does your <> have a touch screen logo? This step on the app may be confusing.

NOTE: Select NO if your appliance dashboard does not look like the picture on your mobile screen!

Follow the prompts on your LG ThinQ app, press and hold the Wi-Fi / Wi-Fi option button on your device as described on the app.

Check the stage for «Does your <> have a touch screen?». Ensure that you are selecting the right option to connect/pair your appliance.

If your dashboard does not look EXACTLY like the image displayed on your mobile phone, then select «NO» option instead of YES.

Once your TV is properly registered, you need to setup Google Home app to connect with your Google Assistant and LG ThinQ.

Setting up your google assistant for the first time may require some patience.

You need to LINK Google Home & LG ThinQ together.

Your phone may disconnect from Wi-Fi during setup.

LG support both Direct Action and Conversation Action which have different process in account linking. Follow the steps below and visit Google Official Help Content on how to setup Google Home.

1. Using GOOGLE ASSISTANT App to link both DIRECT or CONVERSATION action.

Open Google Assistant app.

Select “Assistant Directory” icon at the top right.

Search “LG” in the Explore tap.

Select action that you would like to link.

For Direct Action, select “LG ThinQ”.

For Conversation Action, select “LG”.

2. Using GOOGLE HOME app to link DIRECT action.

Open Google Home app.

Select “Menu” icon at the top left.

Select “Home Control”.

NOTE: Google Home App will automatically switches to Google Assistant App.

Select + button at the right bottom to add devices.

Select “LG ThinQ”.

3. Using GOOGLE HOME device to link CONVERSATION Action.

Say “OK Google, talk to LG” to Google Home.

Open Google Home app.

Select “Link to LG” in the Discover tap.

If your dashboard does NOT look EXACTLY like the image displayed on your mobile phone, then select «NO» option instead of YES.

During the process to connect your <> to LG ThinQ. Your <> will generate its own pre-build Wi-Fi connection that will enable it to communicate with your mobile device. This process is still using your normal home internet.

The password to the Wi-Fi is the last 4 DIGITS at the end of the WI-FI connection name REPEATED TWICE . For example, if your Wi-Fi name is LG_SMART- <> _AJ_ 56E4 , the password is 56E456E4

NOTE: You must repeat this 4 digit codes TWICE!

Once your TV is properly registered, you need to setup Google Home app to connect with your Google Assistant and LG ThinQ.

Setting up your google assistant for the first time may require some patience.

You need to LINK Google Home & LG ThinQ together.

For example, “Ok Google, turn on the air conditioner.” This action supports 10 device types (Washer, Dryer, Air Conditioner, Robot Cleaner, Air Purifier, Dishwasher, Range/Oven, Refrigerator, Styler and TV) to control.

LG action is in Conversation Action type by which you can ask LG through Google Assistant to control devices. For example, “Ok Google, talk to LG to turn on the air conditioner.” This action supports 9 device types (Washer, Dryer, Refrigerator, Air Conditioner, Robot Cleaner, Air Purifier, Range, Dishwasher, TV) to check status and control more features than LG ThinQ action.

To use Direct Action of TV while using existing one, it is necessary to cancel the current LG account link and re-link it

Yes. If you have named air conditioner “Living Room AC” in LG ThinQ App, say “Ok Google, talk to LG to turn on Living Room AC” to Google Assistant. Make sure that you set up product nickname with the space where it is located, such as Bedroom Purifier and Hallway Dryer so that it can be easily memorized and called.

For TV, you can set nickname when you register TV from the Set Up TV for the Google Assistant app on your TV. You can register multiple TVs with the same LG account, but each TV should have a different nickname.

Some LG ThinQ functions are not supported through voice control. For example, you cannot turn a range on with a voice command.

Your product is not supported by LG ThinQ or is not registered in the app.

This occurs when Google Assistant is not able to understand product nickname or device type. Check if your product nickname is appropriate for voice assistant service.
