— Jun. 6th 2019 2:14 pm PT

iOS 13 brings upgrades to Apple Maps and one of the new features rolling out is a Street View-like option called “Look Around.” Read on for how to use this latest Apple Maps feature in iOS 13.

Street View is a highly popular feature that Google Maps has offered for years. It gives users a 3D virtual view at how a location looks in real life and you can stroll up and down streets from your device. Apple has launched its own version of this with Look Around and it offers a smooth and sharp experience on iPhone (in the locations the feature is available).

How to use the new Street View-like ‘Look Around’ feature in Apple Maps on iOS 13

  1. Open Maps
  2. Search for an address, landmark, or city (not available everywhere)
  3. When available, tap the “Look Around” thumbnail with binoculars in the bottom left corner or in the top right corner when zoomed in on the map enough
  4. Pan with one finger, pinch to zoom, tap further down the street to move

Here’s how the new feature looks:

Information like streets, landmarks, and points of interest are overlayed in Look Around. Tap a POI to see more information.

As shown above, tap the minimize arrows in the top left corner to see the Look Around view as well as the map.

While it’s great to see Apple offer a Street View-like option, it will take some time for this feature to roll out across the US and globally.

Everywhere the Apple Maps Look Around ‘street view’ feature works so far

— Apr. 21st 2020 6:17 pm PT

Apple officially completed the rollout of its redesigned Apple Maps earlier this year. The new Apple Maps design gives users improved navigation, better road coverage, and much more. One of the biggest changes is a new feature called Look Around, which offers a street-level view with 3D photography.

What is Apple Maps Look Around?

In many ways, Look Around is Apple’s version of Google’s popular and useful Street View feature. It allows you to zoom in on a particular area, and receive a view as if you’re walking down the street. Look Around offers a street-level view with high-resolution, 3D photography, and more.

Here’s how Apple describes Look Around:

Maps offers interactive street-level imagery with high-resolution, 3D photography and smooth and seamless transitions through major cities with Look Around. Explore select cities with an interactive 3D experience that gives you a 360‑degree view of a place. And enjoy smooth and seamless transitions as you navigate your way around.

The Apple Maps Look Around is supported by any device that runs iOS 13 or iPadOS 13, or any Mac that can run macOS 10.15 Catalina.

Where can you use Look Around?

The Look Around feature in Apple Maps is similar to Google’s Street View, but unfortunately, it is not nearly as ubiquitous. Currently, Apple Maps Look Around is available in ten major areas throughout the United States — it doesn’t cover the entirety of those ten cities, either.

If you want to try out Look Around, visit one of these areas in the Apple Maps app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac:

  • San Francisco
  • Las Vegas
  • Honolulu and Oahu
  • New York City
  • Houston
  • Boston
  • Philadelphia
  • Washington D.C.
  • Los Angeles
  • Chicago

Chicago is the most recent addition to this list, with Look Around going live for the city during the week of April 20, 2020. We’ll update the list as the feature expands to more cities in the United States and eventually in Europe.

You can read more about the rollout of Apple Maps Look Around in this blog post from Justin O’Beirne. Where might the feature expand to next? O’Beirne predicts that cities including Albuquerque, Atlanta, Austin, Buffalo, Dallas, Denver, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Miami, New Orleans, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Seattle, and/or Tampa Bay seem likeliest to be next.

How to use it

Here are some of the controls and customization options you have access to when using Look Around in Apple Maps:

  1. In select cities, tap the binoculars on a map or information card.
  2. To change the view, do any of the following:
    • Pan: Drag a finger left or right.
    • Move forward: Tap the scene.
    • Zoom in or out: Pinch open or closed.
    • View another point of interest: Tap elsewhere on the map.
    • Switch to or from full-screen view: Tap the arrows
  3. When finished, tap Done.

Hands on with iOS 13 ‘Look Around’ in Apple Maps

Apple is improving Apple Maps with the newly announced «Look Around,» an interactive neighborhood map rival to Google’s Street View.

Look Around is Apple’s alternative to Google’s Street View, giving users the option to see a neighborhood without having to visit. When fully implemented, Look Around will be accessible through Apple Maps. Currently, Look Around is only available on the iOS 13 beta.

Using Look Around is intuitive, especially if you’re already familiar with Street View. You swipe to rotate the camera and tap to move in a specific direction. It takes a few seconds for Look Around to respond to a tap to move, but the animations are smooth and less jarring than those of Street View.

The photograph quality of Look Around is especially impressive, albeit not surprising. Apple has only recently begun photographing for their Maps app, where as Google had begun in 2007, when camera quality was not nearly as good. Still, it made us want to be able to use Look Around more, if only to enjoy the highly detailed photography.

Google has had over a decade to photograph streets, paths, and parks around the world, while Apple is just getting started with its own data set. This means that, at least for now, Look Around is almost more like an Easter egg within the iOS 13 beta, than a wide alternative. Apple states that they plan on having all of the US photographed and mapped by the end of 2019, with plans to do other countries in the year after.

Most of the cities we found were by accident, save for Cupertino which we’d had a pretty good hunch about. So far, we have found that you can use Look Around in Cupertino, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Honolulu, but are sure there are a few others left to find.

Apple has also stated that privacy was paramount in this coming iOS update, particularly in regard to location services, and, in turn Apple Maps.

«We always protect your identity and activity,» said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. «There’s no need to flip a switch to ask Apple to start respecting your privacy, because at Apple, we believe privacy is a fundamental human right.»
