The Extraordinary Raw Materials in an iPhone 6s

The Extraordinary Raw Materials in an iPhone 6s

Presented by: Red Cloud Klondike Strike (Equity crowdfunding in mining)

Apple launched the first iPhone in 2007, and since then the iconic smartphone has sold over 700 million units around the world.

This best-selling handset sets the standard for smartphone performance and features. However, the iPhone would not be possible without the extraordinary raw materials that line the insides of the case.

Here’s what’s in an Apple iPhone 6s:

Screen

The iPhone’s screen is much more complex than it may seem. The aluminosilicate glass is bombarded with ions of potassium for strength. Meanwhile, a layer of indium tin oxide makes it touchscreen capable, and small amounts of rare earths enables certain colors on the display.

Battery:

The iPhone uses lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) chemistry in its cathode, with 60% of it being made from cobalt. It also uses a graphite anode and aluminum casing.

Electronics:

Processor Chip: The phone’s processor is mainly made from silicon, but it is bombarded by various elements such as phosphorus, antimony, arsenic, boron, indium, and gallium to give it superior electrical properties.

Micro-Electrical: Copper, gold, silver, and tungsten are used for electrical connections within the phone. Which metal is chosen depends on the need. For example, while silver is the most conductive metal, gold never tarnishes.

Micro-capacitors: regulate electricity flow Apple managed to guarantee it only used conflict-free tantalum in February 2014.

Soldering: Tin, copper, and silver.

Sound and Vibration

Speakers and Headphones: To get lots of sound from a small place, high-powered neodymium magnets are used. They are made from neodymium, iron, and boron, and sometimes also containing smaller amounts of other rare earths.

The same magnets also power the phone’s vibration function.

Case:

Aluminum: The iPhone’s case uses aerospace-grade aluminum with an anodized outside layer for extra protection. This layer is just five micrometers thick, thinner than paint.

Camera:

Sapphire glass: This synthetic material covering the lens rates a 9 on Moh’s hardness scale, making it nearly as hard as a diamond.

Material Substitution?

Of the 83 stable and non-radioactive elements in the periodic table, a total of 62 different types of metals go into the average mobile handset.

In 2013, academics at Yale University looked at these metals and metalloids inside smartphones, and rated their possible replacements. They concluded that 12 of these materials effectively had no replacements at all.

Copper’s Essential Role in Protecting Public Health

Copper can kill up to 99.9% of bacteria on surfaces within two hours of exposure and slow the spread of diseases.

Copper’s Essential Role in Protecting Public Health

Every day, high-touch surfaces present health risks to people in public spaces, and especially the most vulnerable in healthcare. In fact, of every 100 hospitalized patients at any given time, seven will get at least one healthcare-acquired or “hospital infection”.

With naturally antimicrobial properties, copper can kill up to 99.9% of bacteria on surfaces within two hours of exposure and slow the spread of diseases.

In this infographic from our sponsor Teck, we explore copper’s bacteria-fighting abilities and its crucial role in public health.

How Copper Kills Bacteria

Due to its powerful antimicrobial properties, copper kills bacteria in sequential steps:

  • First, copper ions on the surface are recognized by the bacteria as an essential nutrient and enter cell.
  • Then, a lethal dose of copper ions interferes with normal cell functions.
  • Finally, the copper binds to the enzymes, impeding the cell from breathing, eating, digesting, or creating energy.

This rapid killing mechanism prevents cells from replicating on copper surfaces and significantly reduces the amount of bacteria living on the surface.

Antimicrobial copper is effective against bacteria that causes common diseases like staph infections and E. coli that causes foodborne illness. The metal continuously kills bacteria and never wears out.

Besides bacteria, researchers are currently studying copper’s impacts on the virus that causes COVID-19. A previous study suggested that SARS-CoV-2 was completely destroyed within four hours on copper surfaces, as compared to 24 hours on cardboard, and up to three days on plastic and stainless steel. Pre-pandemic studies also demonstrated copper’s ability to kill other coronaviruses.

The Applications of Antimicrobial Copper

Institutions around the world have already deployed antimicrobial copper solutions relating to hospitals, fitness centers, mass transit systems, schools, professional sports teams, office buildings, restaurants, and more.

To date, antimicrobial copper has been installed in more than 300 healthcare facilities around the world. Taking the reduced costs of shorter patient stay and treatment into consideration, the payback time for installing copper fittings is only two months, according to an independent study by the University of York’s Health Economics Consortium.

In Canada, Teck has worked with its partners to install antimicrobial copper coatings on high-touch surfaces in hospitals, educational buildings and transit.

The Stanley Cup champions Los Angeles Kings have installed antimicrobial copper surfaces in their strength and training facility in California. Furthermore, over 50 water bottle filling stations made from antimicrobial copper can also be found throughout the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta.

Copper’s Role in Public Health

While many hospitals and other institutions are already using copper fittings, others are still not aware of its impactful properties.

As awareness increases, copper can become a simple but effective material to help control the spread of infections.

Goodbye scanners and fax machines

Love this app. Use it a few times a week to «scan» my documents, receipts, book excerpts — whatever I want to keep as a digital file. Then I «share» to my Google Drive to store in the cloud, «share» to iBooks or GoodReader to have on my phone, «share» to CudaSign if I need to sign it first, and/or «send» as an email attachment, and I love that I can do all of the above. It would be nice to be able to select all the options you want to do from one screen, rather than go back and select a new option each time. It does sometimes (rarely) crash, but I have never lost any images. I like that it keeps copies of prior scans in case I need to go back. The cropping is pretty good, especially if you put a dark background behind what you are scanning. I like the «enhance» feature to optimize the printed text, and the ability to toggle easily between the enhanced version and the original. The quick toggle between PDF and image is also great. One minor annoyance is that, for some reason, the app will occasionally show the tutorial even when I haven’t updated it and have been using it for months. All in all, a must-have app for me. I used to carry around docs, waiting for a time I was near a scanner or fax. Now, combined with cloud storage, a signing app like CudaSign, and email, it has allowed me to recycle paperwork immediately and free myself from clutter, scanners, and fax machines. Why do companies even use fax machines anymore?

Magical App

This really is magic to use. I’ve used many of the other scanning apps in the App Store and all are so much more difficult to use than this one. I love how it takes the scans without even pressing a button and I also like the option to do things manually. I send everything to Evernote and the integration is so simple. The only thing I wish for is the ability to do my own color correction. Sometimes the app corrects colors on pieces of artwork like it was a text document and that doesn’t work for all things. Also, I would like to add tags to the documents before I send them to Evernote. I wrote this review a long time ago and still love the app. I love how automatic it is, but sometimes wish there were more manual options especially when I am scanning something with very light text and I’d like it to be more legible or a photo with glare. There are other scanning apps that can do that and it would be nice if this one could too. Despite that, for most purposes, this is my go to scanning program.

Great product, but still some problems

I honestly like this scanning app a lot; the scans are super fast, the auto detected borders are fairly accurate, and the end product is a great balance between quality and file size.

That said, there are some problems I’d like to see fixed. I use this app predominantly for scanning books for research, but the app gets overwhelmed and is liable to crash the larger the file size gets. I’ve lost so many scanned books this way. It also stops being able to detect borders as the scanning continues. A simple fix could be to automatically save after a certain number of pages and start a new file. Also, having an adjustable colored border option would remove the need to auto detect borders every time a page is turned; the user would just need to fit the text within the confines of border (as a bonus, it would cut out any background — including fingers — that would fall within that frame). I’d like to see more options for adjusting size and quality as well.

All that aside, Scannable is still one of the best scanning apps I’ve found so far, and having these few added improvements (even as a paid add-on) would make it ideal.
