Question: Q: iPhone 6 mute button won’t mute
My iPhone 6 mute button is not working correctly, it’s showing as set to silent on the screen but I can still hear sounds as normal.
I also don’t see the volume level anymore when changing it.

What’s the point of having a toggle switch for volume «off/on» if the thing does not actually do that ‘in some cases’? That’s a horrible design flaw of the iPhone 6s that Apple Corp is ignoring. Not to mention how annoying and inconvenient this is. I consider ithis a major flaw despite your trying to minimize it.

Thanks for the question. Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like you are still hearing some sounds when your Ring/Silent switch is toggled. This may be expected behavior depending on the source of the sound. For more information, see the following:
Important: Clock alarms, audio apps such as Music, and many games play sounds through the built-in speaker, even when iPhone is in silent mode. In some areas, the sound effects for Camera and Voice Memos are played, even if the Ring/Silent switch is set to silent.
For information about changing sound and vibration settings, see Sounds and silence.
In some cases, you may not see a volume slider in apps or Control Center, or no volume bars when you adjust volume with buttons. If you are experiencing this symptom, see the following resource for troubleshooting information:

Use the side, Home, and other buttons on your iPhone
Learn about the buttons and switches on your iPhone.
From left to right: iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 8, and iPhone X and later
Sleep
On iPhone 6 and later, press the side button to wake your iPhone or put it to sleep. On iPhone SE (1st generation) and earlier, press the top button.
Ring/Silent
Use the ring/silent switch to mute sounds and alerts.
If the switch shows orange, it means your iPhone is in silent mode and will vibrate for incoming calls or alerts. When in silent mode, the alarms you set in the Clock app will still sound, and calls from Favorite contacts will still ring.
Volume up/down
Use the volume up/down buttons to adjust the volume when listening to music, watching videos, or playing games.
When you press the buttons, you’ll see the Volume under the indicator. When you’re not using other apps, the buttons will adjust the ringer volume and you’ll see Ringer under the indicator.
Home button/Touch ID
Use the Home button to unlock your device or make purchases using Touch ID. Press the Home button once to go to the Home screen. Press the Home button twice to bring up the App Switcher.
Restart
On iPhone X and later, press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons to restart your iPhone. On iPhone SE (2nd generation), 8, 7, or 6, press and hold the side button. On iPhone SE (1st generation) and earlier, press and hold the top button.
Siri
Press and hold the side button or Home button to use Siri.

How to put your iPhone on vibrate, ring, or silent mode
The Ring/Silent switch is on the left side of your iPhone. You can use it to control which sounds play through your iPhone speaker.
Turn Ring/Silent mode on or off on your iPhone
In Ring mode, you hear ringtones and alerts. In Silent mode, you don’t, but your iPhone can still play sounds, like when you play music or videos.
Use Ring mode
To put your iPhone in Ring mode, move the switch so that orange isn’t showing.
Use Silent mode
To put your iPhone in Silent mode, move the switch so that orange is showing.
Change ringtones, sounds, and vibrations
- On iPhone 7 and later, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics. On earlier iPhone models, go to Settings > Sounds.
- Choose what you want to adjust, like Ringtone or New Mail.
- Tap the alert tone that you want. You can also tap Vibration and choose a vibration pattern or make a custom vibration.
Change ringtone and alert volume with buttons
If you want to control your ringtone and alert volume separately from other apps, turn off Change with Buttons. Then you need to manually adjust your ringtone and alert volume in Settings > Sounds & Haptics or Settings > Sounds.

Question: Q: mute button on iphone 6s not working
When I try to mute my iPhone 6s from ringing using the button on the left hand side of the phone it doesn’t work
I usually get the ringer on or off sign in the screen, but nothing happened any more?

it has a warranty, I am all for fixing urself, but if its Apple and the issue is covered by warranty, I would do that. .
If you fix yourself; it could be the flex cable to the mute switch. if it needs replacing you will probably end up taking apart most of the other buttons in there also; volume, sleep/wake/ power.

If the volume buttons, Ring/Silent switch, or Side Switch aren’t working
On an iPhone, the volume buttons and Ring/Silent switch are on the left side of the device. The buttons on other iPhone models are similar. On an iPad, the volume buttons and Side Switch are on the right side of the device.
If any of these buttons or switches aren’t working, follow these steps. After each step, see if you still need help:
- Unlock your device. Some buttons don’t work from the Lock screen.
- Check for debris or dirt around the button or switch and clean it with a soft cloth.
- Remove all protective films and cases that might interfere with the button or switch.

Question: Q: New iPhone 6 — with wabbly mute button
Just picked up my new iPhone 6 128G Grey from our local Apple Store (fantastic reservation system). Whilst the unit is solid and like past iPhones, I noticed the muted button is wabbly in both on and the off positions (straight out of the box). Most uncharacteristic of Apple and iPhone products.
Anyone else seeing similar on their 6 devices?
I strongly suspect it’s a manufacturing/component issue but is interested in knowing how widespread or if it’s even a norm for the unit.
Already have a Genius appointment for Sunday and will see what they have to say.

What does «wabbly» mean? Did you mean to type «wobbly»? Very few people are going to have their iPhones yet.
Sep 18, 2014 8:31 PM
«Wabbly» as in it moves without purpose, it’s loose. It still switches to the two positions fine, but is significantly loose whilst switched in either positions.
Sep 18, 2014 8:39 PM
Sorry. Wobbly I meant. Was dyslexic earlier as I had little sleep last night. Work, wasn’t queuing in an iPhone line.
Sep 18, 2014 11:45 PM
Same thing here, a bit loose. Checked it against my two year old 5 and that button is dead solid. That’s the price we pay for the first batch I guess.
Sep 19, 2014 4:44 PM
Yep, I’d say so. Growing pains of a production line. Apple will need to take it back for a swap IMHO.
Sep 19, 2014 5:24 PM
Apparently, you answered your own question.
Sep 19, 2014 5:52 PM
Until Apple/Genius takes a position, there’s no finality just as yet. 😉
Sep 20, 2014 12:59 AM
I have same problem. what did apple say?
Sep 22, 2014 4:48 PM
The Genius Bar member secured a replacement unit for me but it also had the wobbly button. So I told him that it’s not appropriate for me to make the exchange at this point. I’ll come back again when either they have fixed the manufacturing process/component or Apple takes an official position on it. I keep forgetting to check the iPhones on display in the Apple Store. Still have no good sense of how prevalent the issue is, or if it’s even considered to be within spec.
Sep 22, 2014 9:12 PM
Just to chime in here, I have a 64GB iPhone 6 in space grey, also have a «wobbly» mute switch in both the muted and unmuted positions. Have read two other reports of this online, and a friend has the same issue with his iPhone 6. Am going to wait to see how it plays out over the coming weeks.
Sep 23, 2014 3:39 AM
Just returned my iPhone 6 64gb to apple store because of a wobbly mute button the genius said it shouldn’t be like that and exchanged it but the replacement also had a wobble the genius said it wasn’t as much as the wobble I originally had. To be quite honest apple support at their call centre didn’t know of the problem. All the models on display in the store have wobbly mute buttons too.
Also on the replacement phone the protruding camera has a bit of movement. It is very slight but it is definitely there. I might just return the phone and wait until christmas to get one without these defects. My iphone 5 was perfect when I bought it as soon as it came out.

Same problem here. Support guy asked my to restore first. Should call tomorrow again to get it repaired. Will report here, what happens next.

Same problem here!! I’m asking the support team in the live chat. Waiting for their answer!

As promised, my report: Yesterday I visited the German Apple Store in Dusseldorf. They replace my iPhone (luckily they had mine Silver, 64GB, 4.7 inch in stock). I got an invoice over 0€ on which a repair for 239,50€ (without tax) is written.
Now on the new device the mute button is just fine and has no problems. However, today I noticed that I can move the home button slightly back and forth also the Touch ID metal ring is sharp-edged. I will visit the store in a few weeks again, hope to get this repaired as well.
It seems that the devices of the first production series are really badly quality tested. 🙁

had my second Genius Bar appointment and they replaced my iphone 6 again so this is my third one! This time instead of a swap they did a retail return and re-sale so they gave me a new phone out of the new batch of iphone that they would have sold to walk in customers. This one has no issues with the mute button its stiffer and doesn’t wiggme in the on or off position. I’ve taken out apple care just in case as my 14 day grace period will end before I get another appointment if anything should go wrong.
Much happier with this one!
