[Update 2: New Roadmap] HMD Global reveals Android 10 update roadmap for its Nokia smartphones, teases cheap 5G phone for 2020
Update 03/11/20 @ 2:35 PM ET: HMD Global has shared a new Android 10 update roadmap for its Nokia smartphones.
Update 09/27/2019 @ 2:55 AM ET: HMD Global has revealed their update plans for Android Go devices in their portfolio. Scroll to the bottom for updates. The original article as published on August 22, 2019, is preserved as below.
The latest version of Android, formerly known as Android Q, will be called Android 10 as part of Google’s newest efforts to give Android a fresher look. That’s it, no fluff, no dessert name—just Android 10. And while this may make sense from a business perspective, it is still not sitting well with Android enthusiasts. Nonetheless, Google made the announcement in anticipation of the OS’ stable release, which should now come sooner than later, and with it, some companies have started detailing their plans for rolling out the new OS to Android users. One of these companies is HMD Global, which has outlined their Android 10 update roadmap for their Nokia device lineup.
The good news is that the update will be rolling out across several device ranges, from flagship devices all the way down to Android Go edition phones. Users from all ranges will be able to enjoy the update. The bad news? Some devices are being dropped this time, particularly those that launched with Android Nougat such as the Nokia 6. We’re guessing this means that the company’s update policy doesn’t allow for more than 2 major platform updates, which is a bummer—some companies like OnePlus have started giving users up to 3 major platform updates, with 2016 devices like the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T having received updates to Android Pie this year.
The rollout is set to begin as soon as Q4 2019, with the following devices receiving updates to Android 10 and Android 10 (Go edition):
- Nokia 9 PureView, Q4 2019
- Nokia 8.1, Q4 2019
- Nokia 7.1, Q4 2019
- Nokia 7 Plus, Q1 2020
- Nokia 6.1 Plus. Q1 2020
- Nokia 6.1, Q1 2020
- Nokia 2.2, Q1 2020
- Nokia 3.1 Plus, Q1 2020
- Nokia 3.2, Q1 2020
- Nokia 4.2, Q1 2020
- Nokia 1 Plus, Q1 2020
- Nokia 5.1 Plus, Q1 2020
- Nokia 8 Sirocco, Q1 2020
- Nokia 2.1, Q2 2020
- Nokia 3.1, Q2 2020
- Nokia 5.1, Q2 2020
- Nokia 1, Q2 2020
After being the fastest to upgrade Nokia phones from N to O and O to P, I am super excited to share with you that the Q(ueue) for Nokia phones is moving fast as we get ready to welcome Android 10 on Nokia smartphones – roll out starts in Q4, 2019! #Nokiamobile #android10 pic.twitter.com/qXM4ZXAPBo
HMD also has other, more ambitious plans for 2020, including getting 5G into the hands of more people. A 5G device from the Finnish brand is coming next year, but it will stand out from the pack by being affordable, according to Juho Sarvikas, chief product officer at HMD Global, talking to Digital Trends. Currently, 5G devices are going upwards of $1,000 at the very least, so their device, according to our expectations, should retail for around $500 or $600. It is most likely set to be a mid-range device given its price point and how 5G technologies are still plenty expensive, but at such a price point, more people will be able to get their hands on ultra-fast 5G signals.
What do you think about HMD’s latest plans for next year? Let us know down in the comments.

Update: Android 10 update roadmap for Android Go devices
HMD Global has now shared its update roadmap for Android 10 Go edition.
Android 10 Go Edition will first arrive on the Nokia 1 Plus in Q1 2020, while the Nokia 2.1 and the Nokia 1 will receive it in Q2 2020. The update does appear to be arriving very late, as by Q2 2020, we already expect to see the first glimpse of Android 11, with an eventual release in Q3 2020.
Update 2: New Roadmap
Juho Sarvikas has released a slightly updated roadmap for HMD Global’s Android 10 plans. He says the company has taken all the steps to fight COVID-19, but implies it has set their schedule back a bit. Here is the updated list:
Q1 2020
- Nokia 2.2
- Nokia 2.3
- Nokia 6.2
- Nokia 7.2
- Nokia 3.2
- Nokia 4.2
- Nokia 8 Sirocco
- Nokia 3.1 Plus
Q2 2020
- Nokia 5.1 Plus
- Nokia 1 Plus
- Nokia 3.1
- Nokia 2.1
- Nokia 5.1
- Nokia 1

Android™ developer preview for mobile app developers
Nokia phones Android™ 12 developer preview program
Welcome to the forefront of Android
Update 28th October 2021
Thanks for your valued feedback — we’re now closing registrations for new users
What’s new?
- We’re close to preparing the official Android 12 upgrade build for Nokia X20. Stay tuned to your regional media channels for news of the release schedule.
- We’re now closing registrations for new developer preview users and any new requests for the ADP#2. If you’re already enjoying ADP#2 release, we hope you’ll want to stay with us up to the official release.
- You can now upgrade without loss of user data from any Android 11 official build or the earlier ADP build (V2.072). Please note that rollback from ADP to the official Android 11 build will result in loss of user data.
Important Notes
Please review the points below before proceeding with the registration process:
- Android 12 developer preview builds (ADP) are early Android OS releases and are intended for application developers only – they are not recommended for general use.
- Although strenuously tested by our development team, the builds may exhibit performance and/or stability issues in some cases.
- Some applications downloaded from the Google Play Store may not be supported (either in full or in part) and may show signs of instability.
- Online support is limited and may not be available to help users who experience difficulties with flashing the device.
If you have any doubts on whether these builds are suitable for your use, we recommend you do not continue with developer preview registration and await the official market release.
Please note, we may not be able to offer Android developer preview builds to devices on certain network providers.
Ready to get started?
- Open the My Device app on your phone, click on the Support banner at the bottom, and scroll down to “Android developer preview”.
- Allow the app to check your IMEI (so we can check eligibility of device), agree to the software license terms and conditions, and after checking the Important Notes, confirm you’re happy to continue.
Learn more about Android developer builds on the Android Developer Preview site: developer.android.com
Get developer preview over the air
Over-the-air (OTA) is the easiest way to get your hands on the new Android developer preview builds. Due to image file size, it is recommended that users download builds over Wi-Fi.
For existing ADP users, the new build will be pushed automatically to your device – no need to request the update.
New ADP users should note that after you request the update, the build will be available to you within 12 hours and you’ll get a notification on your device when it is ready to install.
Alternatively, if you want to try and get the build sooner, wait about 20 minutes after requesting the build (so we can get the build synched with your IMEI) and then try a manual push request from Settings > About Phone > System Updates.
You can now test your apps! Don’t forget to let us know what you think – you’ll be helping with software improvements and enhancements later down the line.
Please report any issues through the pre-installed Customer Feedback app as this is the quickest way we can take in your issues in for further review.
Also, feel free to discuss your experiences with other developer preview users in the Nokia phones community.
Rollback to official release
We really hope you’ll continue with ADP and give feedback through the Customer Feedback app, but if you’d prefer to return to the official release software, you can do so by requesting a rollback through the My Device app.
- Please remember that rollback to an official market release will result in the loss of user data. We recommend that you periodically back up any important data such as contacts, call logs, pictures, videos, music, installed apps, chat history, SMS history, notes, etc. You may also need to re-install any applications previously downloaded.
- Ideally, your phone should be fully charged, but a minimum of 60% charge is recommended.
- Please note you will not be able use the phone – including any attempts to make an emergency call – until the installation is complete and the phone has booted into a stable state.
You’ll still be a member of the Nokia phones Developer preview program and be able to request ADP builds should you so wish.
Unregistering
If you wish to unregister from the Nokia phones Android developer preview program, you must first roll back all devices in your account to the latest general release Android version.

Here’s when HMD Global plans to roll out the Android 11 update to Nokia phones
Update 1 (10/08/2020 @ 3:21 PM ET): After briefly being published and pulled last week, the Android 11 update roadmap for eligible Nokia smartphones has once again been shared by HMD Mobile. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on September 29, 2020, is preserved as below.
HMD Global has nearly finished rolling out Android 10 to its lineup of Nokia devices, but there’s already a new Android update on the horizon. Google recently released Android 11 for its Pixel phones, so understandably, Nokia users are wondering when the update will arrive on their devices. For some users, an update is just around the corner.
In a now-deleted Tweet, the Nokia Mobile account shared a roadmap for when HMD Global plans to begin rolling out Android 11 for supported devices. Some of the devices on the list shipped with Android 9, so the company appears to be sticking to its three year promise.
Nokia Mobile posted and then deleted this Tweet, but Neowin captured a screenshot of the tweet.
Up first on the list are devices like the new Nokia 8.3 5G, the Nokia 8.1, the Nokia 2.2, and the Nokia 5.3, which the graphic shows will get Android 11 by Q4 2020. In Q1 2021, HMD Global plans to roll out Android 11 to the Nokia 1.3, Nokia 4.2, Nokia 2.4, Nokia 2.3 and Nokia 3.4. HMD Global’s graphic includes information through Q2 2021, promising to update five more devices to Android 11 by then. Those devices include the Nokia 3.2, the Nokia 7.2, the Nokia 6.2, the Nokia 1 Plus, and the Nokia 9 PureView.
Unfortunately, there are some notable absences on the list, as noted by Neowin, including the Nokia 8 Sirocco and the budget Nokia 1, the latter of which received Android 10 over the summer. If a budget device is what you’re after, however, you have plenty of more recent options to choose from.
It’s unclear why Nokia Mobile deleted its post, but we were able to verify that the tweet was indeed posted on Twitter. It’s possible not all the information about Android 11 included in the graphic is accurate, or perhaps Nokia Mobile simply wasn’t prepared to share it publicly yet.
If you’re anxious to give Android 11 a shot, hopefully HMD Global will stick to the roadmap it briefly shared on Twitter.
Update: Nokia’s Android 11 update roadmap released, for real this time
HMD Global has now officially revealed its update roadmap for Android 11 and it is identical to the previous leak.
