Android™ developer preview for mobile app developers
Nokia phones Android™ 12 developer preview program
Welcome to the forefront of Android
Update 28th October 2021
Thanks for your valued feedback — we’re now closing registrations for new users
What’s new?
- We’re close to preparing the official Android 12 upgrade build for Nokia X20. Stay tuned to your regional media channels for news of the release schedule.
- We’re now closing registrations for new developer preview users and any new requests for the ADP#2. If you’re already enjoying ADP#2 release, we hope you’ll want to stay with us up to the official release.
- You can now upgrade without loss of user data from any Android 11 official build or the earlier ADP build (V2.072). Please note that rollback from ADP to the official Android 11 build will result in loss of user data.
Important Notes
Please review the points below before proceeding with the registration process:
- Android 12 developer preview builds (ADP) are early Android OS releases and are intended for application developers only – they are not recommended for general use.
- Although strenuously tested by our development team, the builds may exhibit performance and/or stability issues in some cases.
- Some applications downloaded from the Google Play Store may not be supported (either in full or in part) and may show signs of instability.
- Online support is limited and may not be available to help users who experience difficulties with flashing the device.
If you have any doubts on whether these builds are suitable for your use, we recommend you do not continue with developer preview registration and await the official market release.
Please note, we may not be able to offer Android developer preview builds to devices on certain network providers.
Ready to get started?
- Open the My Device app on your phone, click on the Support banner at the bottom, and scroll down to “Android developer preview”.
- Allow the app to check your IMEI (so we can check eligibility of device), agree to the software license terms and conditions, and after checking the Important Notes, confirm you’re happy to continue.

Get developer preview over the air
Over-the-air (OTA) is the easiest way to get your hands on the new Android developer preview builds. Due to image file size, it is recommended that users download builds over Wi-Fi.
For existing ADP users, the new build will be pushed automatically to your device – no need to request the update.
New ADP users should note that after you request the update, the build will be available to you within 12 hours and you’ll get a notification on your device when it is ready to install.
Alternatively, if you want to try and get the build sooner, wait about 20 minutes after requesting the build (so we can get the build synched with your IMEI) and then try a manual push request from Settings > About Phone > System Updates.
You can now test your apps! Don’t forget to let us know what you think – you’ll be helping with software improvements and enhancements later down the line.
Please report any issues through the pre-installed Customer Feedback app as this is the quickest way we can take in your issues in for further review.
Also, feel free to discuss your experiences with other developer preview users in the Nokia phones community.
Rollback to official release
We really hope you’ll continue with ADP and give feedback through the Customer Feedback app, but if you’d prefer to return to the official release software, you can do so by requesting a rollback through the My Device app.
- Please remember that rollback to an official market release will result in the loss of user data. We recommend that you periodically back up any important data such as contacts, call logs, pictures, videos, music, installed apps, chat history, SMS history, notes, etc. You may also need to re-install any applications previously downloaded.
- Ideally, your phone should be fully charged, but a minimum of 60% charge is recommended.
- Please note you will not be able use the phone – including any attempts to make an emergency call – until the installation is complete and the phone has booted into a stable state.
You’ll still be a member of the Nokia phones Developer preview program and be able to request ADP builds should you so wish.
Unregistering
If you wish to unregister from the Nokia phones Android developer preview program, you must first roll back all devices in your account to the latest general release Android version.

Android 12 Beta 1 will soon be available for the Nokia X20
Google just released the first Android 12 beta build for the Pixel lineup, and it packs a ton of new features. The update includes a new “color extractions” feature that changes the system’s theme based on your current algorithm, a dynamic lighting feature, a Quick Wallet Access feature on the lock screen, and much more. While these features are currently only available on Google Pixel devices, you’ll soon be able to try them out on your Nokia X20.
HMD Global has announced that it will be launching its Android 12 developer preview program for the Nokia X20 soon, giving early adopters and developers a chance to experience Android 12 ahead of the stable rollout. Once HMD Global’s developer preview program is live, Nokia X20 users will be able to download the first Android 12 beta build on their devices and provide crucial feedback through the Nokia community forum. Developers who’re interested in joining the forum can register through the MyPhoneApp available on their Nokia X20.
Additionally, HMD Global has revealed some key features that will be available on Nokia devices running Android 12. These include AVIF image support, audio-coupled haptic feedback for immersive gaming and audio experiences, refreshed app launch animations and improved privacy and security features.
If you’re interested in learning more about all the new features introduced in the first Android 12 beta, make sure you check out our announcement post.

Android 12 Beta on Nokia X20 | What’s New?
Android 12 DP on Nokia X20
Before we start, please don’t update to the Android 12 Developer Preview on your Nokia X20 if it’s your daily driver. The update is not stable enough or smooth enough to give you a reliable experience.
Now that this is out of the way, here is the video covering all the differences introduced with Android 12 so far on the X20 vs Android 11. Check it out below:
The update is still on the June Security patch, which tells us that this isn’t the most up-to-date version currently being worked on. It also doesn’t have any of the Material You aspects shown by Google which is in my opinion the most interesting aspect of Android 12. The improvements are mainly cosmetic and done to improve readability and one-handed usability.
RANT
At this point in time, Google still not using a black background in dark mode (or at least giving us the option to go with pitch-black) is some kind of cruel joke. Not only is dark grey ugly (personal opinion), but it also removes any advantage in power saving an OLED display would benefit from. It even helps highlight any OLED display color issues that may be present, from gradients to colour shifts. If Windows Phone and Meego managed to properly implement such a basic thing back in 2011-2012, why does Google insist on not doing it properly in 2021?
While I’m here, stop spamming us with the Google Assistant. Right now you can summon the Google assistant by:
- Google assistant button (lucky us)
- Search bar forced on your home screen, unremovable
- Swipe from the bottom corner
- Long press on the power button (disabled by default, yay)
- “Hey Google”
Just fantastic. How is this any better than having ads baked into the OS?
Anyway, it’s still too early to pass any judgment on the performance of Android 12 on the Nokia X20 as this is called the developer preview for a reason. Here is hoping we actually manage to notice the promised under the hood improvements Google has promised for smoothness and efficiency on the final release.
