Volume adjustment using Android’s Engineering Menu

Apparently, the majority of Android’s users ever encountered a challenge of sound control. For example, I’ve always been uncomfortable with next 2 troubles. Firstly – too low audio level of phone-speaker during entering phone-call, and, the secondly – too high audio level in the headset during entering phone-call.

Brief information about how Android OS controls volume

Audio settings of your smartphone or tablet depend on whether other devices are connected to it (for example Hands-free or headphones). When such accessories are not plugged, volume level of your smartphone will not change, however if you will connect to your gadget headphones or hands free – volume settings may change unexpectedly. For example, let’s consider the following situations.

Example 1. While listening to the songs with phone the sound was turned on at full power, but in case of connection of headphones to your smartphone and start to listen to the music again, sound settings may change by itself (volume may become higher or lower, depending on smartphone’s type or version).

Example 2. During the receiving of incoming call, ringer volume in headset may become another again – same as general ring volume, that may lead to powerful sound impact on your eardrums. I frequently had been jumped up from the couch because of it. And everything happened through fault of developers, who couldn’t adjust the sound settings in a right way.

Example 3. While talking on the smartphone you need to use loudspeaker function, but your phone becomes louder or quiter comparing with time when you have listened audio files on if. Another problem may arise if the other party hearing your voice badly, by reason that your microphone modes may have different sensitivity. The same problem with sound may appear, if you turn on the Speakerphone mode after attaching the headphones to your gadget. That’s how Android does Sound adjustment.

Theory of Volume control and general characteristics

So, let’s find out what we can do using Engineering Mode.

At first, we recommend to comprehend whole material, and only after move to experimenting with changes. I’m recommending to record all the factory (initial) values, in case of possible future mistakes. To enter Engineering Mode, you need to type on smartphone’s keyboard such set of numbers (Picture 1):

  1. Samsung smartphones – * # * # 8 2 5 5 # * # * or * # * # 4 6 3 6 # * # *
  2. Huawei smartphones – * # * # 2 8 4 6 5 7 9 # * # *
  3. Smartphones, based on MTK processor – * # * # 3 6 4 6 6 3 3 # * # * or * # * # 5 4 2 9 8 # * # *
  4. HTC smartphones – * # * # 8 2 5 5 # * # * or * # * # 3 4 2 4 # * # * or * # * # 4 6 3 6 # * # *
  5. Alcatel, Philips, Fly – * # * # 3 6 4 6 6 3 3 # * # *
  6. Sony smartphones – * # * # 7 3 7 8 4 2 3 # * # *

Congratulations, you have got access to Engineering Menu! It should be taken into account, that the structure of main menu of different Smartphone brands can look different. Now you need to enter «Audio» settings (Picture 2). After a successful section entry, you will notice a few incomprehensible strings (Picture 3). A short description of these Android’s modes you will find below:

  • Normal Mode (Settings in normal or average mode) – this mode is active initially, when there are no attached devices;
  • Headset Mode (regime with devices plugged in) – this mode of smartphone with connected headset or speaker;
  • Loud_Speaker Mode – regime is active when there are no attached headsets and user turns on the Speakerphone mode while phone conversation;
  • Headset LoudSpeaker Mode (LoudSpeaker Mode, active when you connect other devices) – mode, that becomes active if user turns on LoudSpeaker when same time another headset is connected;
  • Speech Enhancement (Speaking mode) – this mode is activated during the phone call, in case if headsets are not connected and the Speakerphone Mode is not turned on;

It is better not to enter the last three sections:

  • Debug Info – function that include debugging information;
  • Speech Logger – also not clear to me, it means recognition of speech or instant translation. If you click checkbox “Enable speech log”, files with the name of the following type will appear on smartphone’s memory card: Mon_Nov_2017__06_10_12.vm (Monday_November_2017__time06_10_12.vm). I’m not certain how to use or open. The folder /sdcard/VOIP_DebugInfo (that stores files with debugging information) – is not created automatically, and in the case of manual creation after phone conversation will remain empty;
  • Audio logger – mode, using to record sounds with support of fast search, playback and saving modes;

Good understanding of these modes, will help you to change audio settings of your smartphone or tablet at your own discretion. After entering into mentioned Engineering Menu, you will find several different ways to adjust the volume. Basic terms that you need to be familiar with described on Picture 4:

  • Mic – microphone sensitivity indicator;
  • Sip – internet call indicator;
  • Sid – skip this, changing of these parameters during the phone conversation, will lead to the fact that you will hear yourself and not your interlocutor;
  • Sph – indicator of the spoken speaker (you put it to your ears);
  • Sph2 – indicator of the second speaker (it doesn’t install on my smartphone);
  • Ring – entering phone-call settings;
  • Media – install volume of multimedia settings;
  • FMR – indicator of radio sound settings.

Next, under the list of settings, we can see the panel of audio levels (Picture 5). To consolidate the material studied – there are 7 levels in total, starts from 0 (the lowest) and up to 6 (the highest). To change the volume to one level, just tap one time on the scale with your finger. With this particular scale, user can switch these volume levels while talking on the phone. So, level 0 corresponds to the lowest sound level, and level 6 means the loudest volume settings. You can change the settings of each level and assign new value at your discretion, ranging from 0-255 (when minimum value corresponds to the lowest volume). With assigning of the new value, the old value will be erased. So, you just need to change the value in the cell on desired one and press “Set” (located next to the Cell) for assignment (Picture 6). It is better not to set the maximum value in all cells, because the speaker can start to make noise (sizzle or squeak).

Afterwards, find at the very bottom of page where you will find maximum sound value in range 0-160 (this value may differ and depend on the brand of your device) (Picture 7). Here in particular you can finally make volume adjustment for all Modes.

Editing new settings with help of Engineering Mode

Case 1. How to make louder the signal of incoming call?

First, you need to enter “Audio” section of the Main menu. Then enter “Loud Speaker_Mode” and select “Ring” in audio settings (entering phone-call settings). After consistently change settings of all sound levels (from 0 to 6). Then, in order to achieve a better result, you shall change the number of Maximum Volume in range 0-160, in case if maximum value is not set properly (I usually set 155, because with louder volume settings your smartphone will starts to “croak”).

Case 2. Volume adjustment during phone conversation (raise of sound of conversational speaker, that you put to the ears).

One more time, you need to enter “Audio” section of the Main menu. Then go the “Normal Mode” and select «Sph» and increase the volume on each sound levels (from 0 to 6) on a value needed. Then change values in section of Maximum Volume settings to a bigger one (from 0-160).

Case 3. The way to change the volume settings of a microphone while talking on the phone?

For this purpose, you need to open Engineering Mode, then choose Audio section and run into Normal Mode. Then select Mic. and put the Volume up for all levels selecting the desired value of Maximum volume settings (you can try to set 230). Now your mate will hear everything well.

Case 4. Adjustment of sound during video recording?

In order to change the sound during video recording, enter Engineering Menu and then choose Loud_Speaker Mode and increase the value of the microphone volume settings. To complete this, you need to change volume settings there. You can set 230 on every Maximum volume settings and don’t forget to click on «Set» button for confirmation. Reinstall your smartphone and be glad.

If you will forget to save data after all changes of the settings, your new values won’t be saved. On some devices, you need also to restart you phone or tablet.

Good luck learning how to use your phone effectively. I am waiting for your feedback.
