Question: Q: One-to-One

I had my first One-to-One session last evening and was, frankly, quite disappointed. Answers I received to several questions were incomplete at best and wrong at worst. To top it off, she knew virtually nothing about iMatch and acted as if it was some esoteric product that wasn’t really part of Apple. About all I can say positive is that she was very pleasant and did seem to know the basics. Did I just happen upon a bad experience or is that what others have found? I’m a little concerned because the Apple store is about 45 minutes from me and I’d be reluctant to keep going if my sessions aren’t more informative than this. Also, is it going to be necessary for me to actually unplug and take my iMac in to the store in order to get better responses?

Everyones experience will be different depending on your needs, the store and the Apple employee. Many questions can be answered here in the Apple Support Community by either doing a search or posting your own questions.

I had to look up iMatch. The only one I was aware of is a photo cataloguing app for Windows.

It appears it’s part of iCloud, however. Which leads me to ask what model Mac do you have and is the OS in your profile correct? 10.3.x isn’t going to run iCloud and doesn’t work on Intel Macs.

I’m not sure I understand your reply. iMatch has been around for months; I’ve had it since shortly after the service was announced but it’s not well supported by Apple in terms of information, which is why I was looking for more information at my One-to-One session after I got a new iMac last week. I wasn’t intending this post to be about that, just using it as an example and wondering what experiences others had with One-to-One.

You’re absolutely correct. I’ve somehow gotten in the habit of combining the two and incorrectly calling it iMatch, as do many others.

If you go to the iTunes Match page, there is lots of info including a «See how iTunes Match works» video.

I have to confess my ignorance in that I don’t know what you mean by «update your computer profile.» I have to say I’ve read that and find it kind of superficial. It doesn’t really explain a lot of things, at least in a way that I (not very computer savvy) could understand. Again, I wasn’t trying to turn this into a discussion on Match, it was just an example I tossed in.

I think it goes back to what I said in my first reply. Everyone’s experience is going to be different with the one-on-one service depending on a host of variables. If you have a computer specific issue, it’s probably always best to bring the computer in.

To update you profile:

Go up to the top of the page to «Your Stuff» the Profile. Update there. It’s helpful for other users to properly answer questions based on user/computer profiles.

Apple Stores may end ‘One to One’ training sessions in near future, report claims

Apple is on the verge of phasing out its «One to One» training sessions for Apple Store customers, aiming to direct people into free, open workshops instead, a report said on Monday.

The company will honor any current One to One memberships until they run out, but no new ones will be sold, a source informed MacRumors. One to One costs $99 per year and offers basic training on Apple products via a mix of personal and group sessions.

Apple already runs a variety of free workshops at its stores, but the company is allegedly looking to reorganize them around themes like «Discover» and «Create.» Workshops should also be easier to find on Apple’s main website, instead of being buried in subsections for individual stores.

The motivation for the change is unclear, but Apple has largely ignored One to One during the past few years in terms of marketing and improvements. That could mean dwindling public interest in the program.

Alternately — or because of low interest — Apple might also want to maximize the labor it gets out of retail staff. Workers running personal One to One sessions aren’t free to talk to other customers or process sales, which can potentially impede business.
