Note that my review here is (mostly) for the PS3 and PS4 versions of the game. It is worth nothing that the PS3 and PS4 versions have improvements from the original game that may not be found on the phone version.

About eight months ago, while perusing a sale on the PS3, I noticed a game called Pier Solar and the Great Architects. Being an old-time gamer (all the way back to the days of the 2600!), the SNES/Genesis graphics appealed to me, and I was stunned to find that this was indeed a game in the manner of JRPGs from the Golden Age of the genre. It was heavily discounted, and I snapped it up. Later, I found that purchasing the PS3 version also gave me access to the PS4 version (with separate trophies!), so I’ve actually played and platted this game twice (no small feat, BTW).

There is a lot to like about Pier Solar, but also a lot to dislike. Let’s begin with the good. Pier Solar certainly looks the part of a JRPG. While the Genesis (the initial system of development) was never particularly strong with JRPGs, Pier Solar still recalls many of the greats from the SNES. The graphics are excellent (for those owning the PS3/PS4 version, I highly recommend changing the settings to 16-bit mode), the world is large, and the story is solid. Combat (in theory) works well, and the minigames (particularly the «Eternal Slip» minigame) are actually pretty fun. Bosses look great, and the music is catchy. In short, it really has the feel of a JRPG of the era.

But then, the problems set in. For one, while combat should be great fun, it isn’t, because of a dearth of enemy models and types. There are only around 3-4 enemies appearing in any level, with only 3-4 formations as well. Moreover, enemies tend to possess the same elemental affinities, which completely overpowers the elemental accessories like the «towel», etc. Levels are rife with secret passages, but it is easy to become hopelessly stuck while trying to explore them. Moreover, most of them are completely empty (although in the PS3/PS4 version, one particularly bad one hides a pretty neat little secret that wasn’t available in the original game). And when I say «stuck», I mean «stuck». On two occasions, I had to reset the game because I couldn’t find a way out of the twisting, invisible paths. The story is fine when it focuses on the characters, but it goes all over the place when it focuses on the enemy. Ultimately, I didn’t care at all when I fought the final bosses, because I had little understanding of the motivations present.

Bosses can be brutal. In particular, the second boss is a nightmare unless you equip accessories protecting against fire. But as the game progresses, it becomes significantly easier, mostly because of the broken «gather» command, which allows you to double, triple, and even quadruple your attack power. In fact, if you manage to find the super weapons for one character, he will start every battle at maximum gather, allowing him to completely dominate the enemies before him. Sure, you don’t have to dominate, but why wouldn’t you? I don’t like games that require me to hamstring myself.

In the original version of this game, saves were unequally spaced (in one particularly hellish section, you might go a full hour plus without saving). If you get wiped out, you’re starting over, which means you’re doing some uncomfortable grinding. However, in the PS3/PS4 version, saves are more uniform, which makes grinding incredibly easy (even early on).

Honestly, putting this together, I would give this 3 stars, but what really pushes the game over is the awesome Eternal Slip minigame. This is one of the first arcade-worthy challenges I’ve seen in an RPG since. forever (maybe Alundra with its ridiculous jumping mechanics to get some of the statues would qualify). It’s a nice addition, and I am happy to say that I beat it down twice.

If you like JRPGs of the 16-bit era, you’ll like this, too. If not, you’ll probably wonder why people speak in such hushed tones in regards to them. But I still recommend the game, though not super highly.
