Authorize or deauthorize your computer for iTunes Store purchases
Learn how to authorize your computer before you use it to sync or play content that you download from the iTunes Store.
When you authorize your Mac or PC, you give it permission to access your music, movies, and other content.
- You can authorize up to 5 computers, which means that you can play your content on 5 different computers.
- You can’t authorize a computer from another computer or from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Before you sell or give away your computer or send it in for service, deauthorize your computer to remove its access to protected purchases. For other devices, learn how to see where you’re signed in or remove devices.

How to authorize a Mac or PC
- On a Mac, open the Music app, Apple TV app, or Apple Books app. On a PC, open iTunes for Windows.
- Sign in with your Apple ID.
- In the menu bar on your Mac or PC, choose Account > Authorizations > Authorize This Computer.
If you’re asked to authorize your computer again, it won’t use a new authorization. Apple ID uses the same authorization for the same computer.
See your authorized computers
To automatically sign in to your Account Information page from your computer, click here. Or follow these steps:
- On a Mac, open the Music app, Apple TV app, or Apple Books app. On a PC, open iTunes for Windows.
- Sign in with your Apple ID.
- In the menu bar on your Mac or PC, choose Account > View My Account.
- Sign in with your Apple ID.
- On the Account Information page, scroll to the Apple ID Summary section. You’ll see the number of computers that you’ve authorized with your Apple ID. You can’t see the names of those computers. If you haven’t authorized 2 or more computers, you won’t see this section.
If the number of authorized computers listed is more than what you expect, you might not have deauthorized the computers that you no longer use, gave away, or sold. You need to deauthorize all of your computers and then authorize each one that you still use.
Deauthorize a computer
- On a Mac, open the Music app, Apple TV app, or Apple Books app. On a PC, open iTunes for Windows.
- From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer.
- Sign in with your Apple ID.
- Choose Deauthorize.
If you run out of authorizations, deauthorize all
If one of your 5 authorizations is on a computer that you don’t use anymore, deauthorize it. If you sold or gave away a computer that’s used one of your 5 authorizations, you need to choose Deauthorize All on the Account Information page. Then authorize each computer that you still use.
About authorizing other Apple devices
You don’t need to authorize your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or other Apple device. These devices don’t use your available authorizations. Learn how to check your Apple ID device list to see where you’re signed in and how to remove a device.
Get help
- Learn what to do if your computer keeps asking you to authorize when you try to play your content.
- You can deauthorize all computers once per year.
- If you don’t see Account in the menu bar at the top of your computer screen or the top of the Music app or iTunes window, check your Restrictions. You might have access to the iTunes Store turned off.

To see which apps, music, and other content you bought, look at your purchase history.
See a list of your purchases from the App Store, iTunes Store, Apple Books, and the Apple TV app.
How to see recent purchases on the web
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
- A list of your recent purchases appears. If you’re not sure what you were charged for but you know the exact amount, search for the amount. If there’s a problem with an item that you purchased, use this website to report the problem to Apple.
See your purchase history on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name, then tap Media & Purchases. You might be asked to sign in.
- Tap Purchase History.
- Your purchase history appears. If you want to see purchases that you made more than 90 days prior, tap Last 90 Days, then select a different date range.
See your purchase history on your computer
- Open the Music app or iTunes. From the menu bar at the top of the screen, choose Account, then click View My Account.
- On the Account Information page, scroll down to Purchase History. Next to Most Recent Purchase, click See All.
- Find the item. It might take a moment for your Purchase History to appear. If you want to see purchases that you made more than 90 days prior, click Last 90 Days, then select a date range.
If you can’t find an item in your purchase history
If you can’t find the item you’re looking for, try these things before you contact Apple.
Find out if a family member purchased the item
If you use Family Sharing, your purchase history shows purchases that you made using your Apple ID, but you won’t see what other family members bought. To see what other family members bought, sign in with their Apple ID.
If family members have access to your device, you might want to require a password for every purchase.
To control what kids buy on their own devices, turn on Ask to Buy.
Check if you purchased the item with a different Apple ID
If you don’t see an item in your purchase history, you might have been signed in with a different Apple ID when you made the purchase. Sign in with that Apple ID to check if your purchases were billed to that account.
If you see purchases that you don’t recognize or unexpected charges
- If you see items in your purchase history that you don’t remember buying, check if someone else who uses your device, such as a family member, bought the item. If someone else is using your Apple ID and password, change your Apple ID password.
- Learn what to do if you don’t recognize a charge on your statement from your bank or financial institution.
- Learn how to request a refund.

- If you see an in-app purchase in your purchase history but you don’t see it in the app, restore in-app purchases.
- Cancel a subscription.

If you buy a computer that is within it’s original warranty period — from anywhere, and then buy AppleCare — from anywhere — you can register it to the computer as long as you’re still within the original warranty period. Not a problem at all. Being an authorised reseller doesn’t come into it.

Here on the Apple Discussion Forum you are talking to other users like yourself. To really get an answer to your question you are going to have to take your question directly to Apple.
Personally my guess is they will not allow you to get Applecare on that computer.

but triple check the exterior condition of your laptop. if there’s any cosmetic damages like dents or cracked case, the applecare coverage will most likely be useless!

I just sold my 17″ macbook pro to make way for a 15″.
There’s still 2 years left on the Applecare warranty. is it possible to transfer that to the new owner?

Yes, and its a good idea that you do transfer it properly.
Mine wasnt transfered properly and when Apple couldnt fix the second hand PowerBook and gave me a MBP the AppleCare wasnt transferable and I discovered that my credit went to original credit card. A friend of a friend purchased the PB but that credit card was stolen and six months later we are still looking for the credit. It is a real mess.
I dont have the exact steps needed but vaguely remember needing the receipt or receipt number, original purchasers name and address and new owners name and address. You fax it all to Apple and it is transfered. Hopefully someone can find you a link or you can call AppleCare.
