We’re looking at some of the best running apps for Android, and we’ve got a few different kinds of apps here. Some are more of the hard-core variety, for folks used to exercise who may be looking to increase and improve the way they do things. The best part about most of these apps is that they can integrate with the best fitness trackers, so you can have all of your workout information in one place. Others are more simple — only tracking steps or basic movement. There’s a place for all of these, and some work rather nicely with the best fitness apps.

When searching the Play Store for a solid running app, there are many options to consider. The app must provide detailed tracking, potential premium features, and the ability to sync with your fitness trackers or health apps. Strava fits the bill in all three of these categories by offering a great all-in-one run-tracking application.

If you’ve tried Strava before and weren’t too pleased, then RunKeeper is another fantastic app for tracking your runs and other workouts, all in a neat and simplified interface.

Nike Run Club is the obvious pick in the top three, and that’s not just because it’s free. Taking a look at everything you get without spending any more money is something that cannot be overlooked, and it helps that the NRC app is fantastic.

You’re running. Zombies are chasing. There are plenty of stories to keep you entertained, so it keeps things fun. Want interval training? It can do that, too. If you’re more of a walker than a runner, the app can handle that, too. (Just make sure you walk faster than the zombies shuffle.)

With more than 200 missions customized for walking or running, Zombies, Run! is sure never to get old. The app even provides free cloud backups for your runs, so you can access them even if you get a new smartphone.

The app was acquired by Under Armour a few years ago and brings all the popular features you would expect, including custom workout routines, training plans, and real-time audio coaching. You’ll even find «Healthy At Home Challenges» for those who can’t get out of the house but need to keep working out.

There is deep integration with MyFitnessPal, being able to view your calorie intake and burn. Plus, this will sync with many popular fitness trackers and apps such as Google Fit, Garmin, Fitbit, and more.

If you’re using a FitBit to count your steps, there’s a good chance you’re using the FitBit app. It’s not a traditional running/walking app in the sense that it helps guide your exercise. The Fitbit app is more about counting than it is tracking, we suppose.

But it does a great job with pure distance and calories burned, and it’ll separate active minutes from the minutes in which you’re just milling around. The app is free, and some phones can take advantage of it without buying into FitBit’s accessories line.

Runstastic is another longstanding and excellent way to keep up with your workouts. It’s got a free trial, but if you’re anything like us, you’ll quickly pony up for the Pro version. You get all the standard features — mapping of your route, a calendar for long-term goals, and all sorts of social sharing. Plus, you can manually add activities.

Still, it’s never been a better time to be a runner. Here are the best running apps for Android.

Adidas Running (formerly Runtastic) is one of the most feature-rich running apps out there. It can do basically anything you need it to do. That includes fitness tracking, live tracking, voice coaches, goals, support for various wearables, support for other apps, and a lot more. The only downside to this app is how Adidas handles the pro version. Some features end up behind the paywall, and others come out on a consistent basis. That’s annoying, but it happens. We also dislike its odd subscription models, but they work out to pretty cheap investments when calculated monthly.

Couch to 5K by RunDouble

Price: Free / Up to $3.20

Couch to 5K (abbreviated as C5K) is one of the best running apps for beginners. It tracks your running, gives you paces to strive for, and more. The idea is to get you from never running to 5K runs in nine weeks. Some of the other programs include Couch to 10K, 5K to 10K, half marathon training, and even a fun run section. Some other features include time and distance tracking, integration with music, and heart rate monitor support. This one is also especially great for its price. It has no subscriptions, only a pro version for a very reasonable price.

Runmore 5K Trainer is a simple, easy running app with native Wear OS support. It works like other running apps in this space. You start out easy with 60 seconds of running followed by 90 seconds of walking and work your way up to running a 5K. The UI is super simple, and there aren’t a ton of extras. The premium version adds Google Fit support and a dark theme along with ad-free usage. This is an excellent option for people who like to keep it simple. We also really appreciate there being a subscription option or a one-off payment model.

Strava is best known for its ability to track running and cycling. The app lets you record your route, pace, speed, elevation gained (if running uphill), and calories burned. Plus, there is a strong social element so you can share your runs and keep track of your friends. What makes Strava nice is that you can track basically any aerobic exercise, so you’re not limited to just one form.

Zombies, Run! is one of the most unique running apps. It motivates you by telling you a story. The longer you go, the more of the story you unlock. The free version comes with some basic stuff. However, you need the pro version to get all of the stories along with some additional features. That includes over 200 story missions. Zombie Chases is a fun game mode. Basically, you speed up when you hear zombies behind you or drop supplies to distract them. It isn’t easy to put the experience into words. There is a free version to try out, though!

In some cases, downloading another app isn’t necessary. Many wearables, including Wear OS, Samsung, Fitbit, Withings, and others include apps with their experience. They are generally pretty good for basic stats like steps taken, heart rate (when applicable), distance traveled, stairs climbed, calories burned, and others. For instance, Fitbit (linked) has an excellent app for basic stat tracking. It won’t get you where the others do. However, not everyone wants such an in-depth experience. In that case, these running apps work just fine.
