Android Architecture Blueprints v2

Android Architecture Blueprints is a project to showcase different architectural approaches to developing Android apps. In its different branches you’ll find the same app (a TODO app) implemented with small differences.

In this branch you’ll find:

  • Kotlin Coroutines for background operations.
  • A single-activity architecture, using the Navigation component to manage fragment operations.
  • A presentation layer that contains a fragment (View) and a ViewModel per screen (or feature).
  • Reactive UIs using LiveData observables and Data Binding.
  • A data layer with a repository and two data sources (local using Room and remote) that are queried with one-shot operations (no listeners or data streams).
  • Two product flavors, mock and prod , to ease development and testing (except in the Dagger branch).
  • A collection of unit, integration and e2e tests, including «shared» tests that can be run on emulator/device or Robolectric.

This project hosts each sample app in separate repository branches. For more information, see the README.md file in each branch.

Stable samples — Kotlin

Sample Description
master The base for the rest of the branches.
Uses Kotlin, Architecture Components, coroutines, Data Binding, etc. and uses Room as source of truth, with a reactive UI.
dagger-android

A simple Dagger setup that uses dagger-android and removes the two flavors.

Adds a new domain layer that uses UseCases for business logic.

Old samples — Kotlin and Java

Blueprints v1 had a collection of samples that are not maintained anymore, but can still be useful. See all project branches.

The app in this project aims to be simple enough that you can understand it quickly, but complex enough to showcase difficult design decisions and testing scenarios. For more information, see the app’s specification.

  • A UI/Material Design sample. The interface of the app is deliberately kept simple to focus on architecture. Check out Plaid instead.
  • A complete Jetpack sample covering all libraries. Check out Android Sunflower or the advanced Github Browser Sample instead.
  • A real production app with network access, user authentication, etc. Check out the Google I/O app, Santa Tracker or Tivi for that.
  • Intermediate developers and beginners looking for a way to structure their app in a testable and maintainable way.
  • Advanced developers looking for quick reference.

Opening a sample in Android Studio

To open one of the samples in Android Studio, begin by checking out one of the sample branches, and then open the root directory in Android Studio. The following series of steps illustrate how to open the usecases sample.

Clone the repository:

Finally open the android-architecture/ directory in Android Studio.

An Android app for recording blood pressure measurements.

The application currently requires JDK 11 to build. If you already have JDK 11 installed, skip this step.

Check if the right JDK is already available

Run the command java -version . If you have the right version of the JDK installed, you should see something like:

If this command has an error, or shows a different version, you can follow the instructions below to install the JDK.

Install the JDK

We recommend using jEnv to manage your JDK installations. Here are instructions to setup a working JDK 1.8 installation (macOS only):

Install jEnv using Homebrew.

  1. Add the following lines to your shell configuration file (

/.bash_profile if you’re using bash, or

/.zshrc if you’re using zsh).

  1. Once this is done, you’ll need to restart the terminal or reload the configuration file in order for the jenv command to be recognised.
  1. Install the JDK using Homebrew.
  1. Run the command jenv versions . You should see something like:

Clone the project using git.

Run the following command in a terminal.

Install Android Studio

Download and install Android Studio from their website.

Import the project into Android Studio.

When Android Studio starts up, it will prompt you to create a new project or import an existing project. Select the option to import an existing project, navigate to the simple-android directory you cloned earlier, and select it.

When building for the first time, gradle will download all dependencies so it’ll take a few minutes to complete. Subsequent builds will be faster.

If during the build process you see the message: «Warning: License for package Android SDK Build-Tools 30.0.2 not accepted.» Then you may need to install the Google Play Licensing Library:

  • Open the SDK Manager through Tools -> SDK Manager
  • Select Appearance & Behavior -> System Settings -> Android SDK in the left sidebar
  • Select the SDK Tools tab in the main window
  • Activate Google Play Licensing Library and click Apply

The Simple App can be run locally on an Android emulator using Android Studio. To do this,

Install the NDK library

The NDK library is currently required by the project to enable an SQLite extension. To install it:

  • Open the SDK Manager through Tools -> SDK Manager
  • Select Appearance & Behavior -> System Settings -> Android SDK in the left sidebar
  • Select the SDK Tools tab in the main window
  • Activate NDK (Side by Side) and click Apply

NDK will now be installed.

Create a Run/Debug configuration

  • Open the Run/Debug configurations window through Run -> Edit Configurations (ref)
  • Create a new configuration using the Android App template
  • Set the module to app , and finish creating the configuration

Create a virtual device

  • Create an Android Virtual Device (AVD) using the AVD Manager, usually found in Tools -> AVD Manager. (ref)
  • Select a device and operating system
  • Note: You will have to download one of the available OS options the first time you create an AVD

Set the right build variant

  • Open the Build Variants window through View -> Tool Windows -> Build Variants, or clicking the item in the lower left corner of the main window
  • Set the Build Variant of the app module to qaDebug

Run the app

  • Click «Run», either through Run -> Run, or the green play button in the top toolbar.

The code styles which the project uses have been exported as an IntelliJ code style XML file and are saved as quality/code-style.xml . To import them into Android Studio,

  1. Open the Android Studio preferences page, and navigate to Editor -> Code Style.
  2. Click on the gear/settings button next to the «Scheme» label.
  3. In the drop-down menu, select «Import scheme».
  4. In the file picker, navigate to

/quality/code-style.xml .

  • Import the Simple scheme into the IDE and set it as the project code style.
  • An Android Studio plugin that provides some quality of life improvements like live templates can be found HERE.

    Building an APK with a different build variant

    There are currently 2 ways to build an app pointing to different environments:

    1. Changing the qa API URL in gradle.properties file to point to the environment you want. These builds will be debuggable and require us to clone the project and build it using Android Studio. [* Warning*: These changes should not be commited back to master branch]
    2. Use Bitrise workflows to build APKs of different build variants. These builds will not be debuggable, unless for build-debuggable-sandbox-apk .

    Build and deploy Simple Server

    Simple Server is in a separate repository, and you should follow the instructions there.

    Execute SQL Queries

    You can use Flipper to run SQL queries on Simple:

    1. Install Flipper using brew or download from their website.
    1. Launch Flipper (you might have to allow Flipper to launch from System Preferences > Security > General as it’s from an unknown developer to Apple).
    2. Run the Simple app in an emulator or your physical device(as Flipper loads the data from your device’s local database).
    3. In the Plugins section in the sidebar menu click on Disabled and enable the Database plugin.
    4. Click on Databases, select red-db and choose whichever table’s data you want to inspect.
    5. Click on SQL at the top to execute SQL queries.

    Main repository containing all the example apps demonstrating features/functionality/integrations in android application development

    NOTE: If you are going to download just a single example app (using the download link), make sure you follow the below procedure

    1. Create a folder android-examples
    2. Next download and add the dependencies.gradle to this android-examples folder
    3. Now move the example app folder inside the android-examples folder

    The reason this is required because each single app uses ext variables defined and referenced from dependencies.gradle file from the parent folder namely android-examples .

    Example apps from my android libraries

    I welcome and encourage all pull requests. It usually will take me within 24-48 hours to respond to any issue or request. Here are some basic rules to follow to ensure timely addition of your request:

    Match coding style (braces, spacing, etc.) This is best achieved using Reformat Code feature of Android Studio CMD + Option + L on Mac and CTRL + ALT + L on Linux + Windows .

    If its a feature, bugfix, or anything please only change code to what you specify.

    Please keep PR titles easy to read and descriptive of changes, this will make them easier to merge 🙂

    Pull requests must be made against develop branch. Any other branch (unless specified by the maintainers) will get rejected.

    Check for existing issues first, before filing an issue.

    Make sure you follow the set standard as all other projects in this repo do

    Upgrade your gradle wrapper to the one all other apps are using. Use the below command at root of your project

    i.e ./gradlew wrapper —gradle-version 6.0.1

    Use ext variables as defined in dependencies.gradle , in your build.gradle files to make sure all apps are in sync with configurations and dependencies. Take a look here and here

    Use the package name of the format github.nisrulz.* where * is the example you are adding to the repo. I am trying to follow a set standard in the repo, please adhere to that.

    NOTE: There is a quick bootstrapping cookiecutter template to create an Android example project that adheres to all wiring up and standards for this repo. Read how to use use it here

    Since the repo is pretty large now , I am sure many folks would like to download only some of the projects. To tackle that follow the steps below:

    Install svn using homebrew (mac/linux)

    Copy the name of the example folder in this repo i.e AccessingGoogleDrive

    Next replace example_folder in the below command:

    i.e Consider AccessingGoogleDrive is the name of the example’s folder, the command becomes:
