Question: Q: Apple Store South Africa
Why is the South African Apple store so restricted? If we are buying Apple products Apple.com should make available all apps, music and other products. We are not able to use our Apple hardware effectively!
All Apple products
Posted on Sep 16, 2012 10:10 AM
It is the app and music publishers that place this restriction on where Apple can sell things.

Thank you! So is there no way to resolve this?
Sep 16, 2012 6:28 PM
Send feedback to the makers/publishers or move to a different country. That’s about it.
Sep 16, 2012 7:46 PM
In the case of games, it is only Apple that is placing restrictions on developers by simply removing the category here in South Africa, even though we have games from all other sources.
Oct 4, 2012 8:28 AM
Sorry, but I can’t see how Apple would profit from depriving you from games. The category is removed because no game developers want to sell via the app store there. There may be copyright issues involved as well.
Oct 4, 2012 9:12 AM
This has been extensively discussed elsewhere. Apple are not fools and would not deny themselves revenue without a good reason. What that reason might be that is blocking them from releasing games in the SA iTunes Store has not been stated, but there’s certainly a good reason, be it legal, fiscal, or some combination.
Nothing else can be said on the matter.
Oct 4, 2012 9:23 AM
So what you are saying is that Rovio allow the sale of Angry Birds to Android in South Africa and not Apple in South Africa. This is not tru. The za store is independantly owned and the owners do not buy all the Apps for resale here in SA>
Mar 20, 2013 7:39 AM
Are you honestly saying that Apple has decided they have enough money and on their own decided the don’t want any money from South Africans?
Mar 20, 2013 8:21 AM
The za store is independantly owned and the owners do not buy all the Apps for resale here in SA>
That is incorrect. The SA iTunes Store is not independently owned.
Mar 20, 2013 8:28 AM
Update: another poster from South Africa said this:
The local FPB is in final discussions how to create a rating validation, so Apple’s age/violence ratings can be mapped. Once Apple Luxemborg and the FPB have agreed, they will open the games category finally. Now that we finally have music, limited movies (also FPB approved), we will likely get the games category soon. Keep posting and hoping. Now let’s focus on TV, Books for South Africa next, as they are still missing.
I cannot vouch for the accuracy of that statement.
Mar 20, 2013 9:08 AM
Really. So then Apple (perhaps you work for them) find it fine to take money for harware and limit its use by providing a pathetic App Store.
Mar 20, 2013 9:09 AM
No, I do not work for Apple. If you find the App Store pathetic, you are free to go buy some other device and patronize whatever store sells apps for that product. Continuing to whine here accomplishes nothing.
Mar 20, 2013 9:12 AM
None of us work for them. I had also heard that the problem was with the South African censorship board, rating board, whatever it is that was the holdup as described in the post above.
Mar 20, 2013 9:12 AM
No what I am honestly saying is that economically it does not make sense for Apple to limit what is available on the App Store, other than if they do not control the situation!
Mar 20, 2013 9:14 AM
Thank you for that input. I am aware that I am at liberty to puchase whatever I please from whomever I please. What I do not understand is your agressive defense if you are not involved with Apple.
