At the same time, the pumpkin spice latte or PSL is already available at Starbucks. At the moment, it is unclear if apple crisp macchiato will become a regular drink.

I tried Starbucks’ new Apple Crisp Macchiato, and it’s the perfect fall drink for people who think the PSL is too sweet
I have a confession to make: I always dread fall. It signals that warm weather is gone, beach days have disappeared, and winter is near. I do not get excited by sweaters, Halloween, or anything pumpkin.
But I’m always up for a new Starbucks drink. So when the chain told me that it was releasing a new flavor in honor of autumn, I decided to put my biases aside — at least, temporarily — and get a little excited.
And I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Apple Crisp Macchiato, which Starbucks released on Tuesday, could warm even my autumn-hating heart.
Here’s what I thought of both the hot and iced versions of Starbucks’ brand-new drink, and why I like it more than the classic Pumpkin Spice Latte.
The Apple Crisp Macchiato is Starbucks’ newest fall drink
The hot and iced versions both have «layered flavors of apple and brown sugar melding like the filling of a gooey apple pie in harmony with espresso,» according to a press release. They also feature a caramelized-spiced apple drizzle, which is made with apple juice, apple puree, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Starbucks began testing «a bushel of apple-flavored favorites» — including apple maple syrup, apple cider doughnuts, and a variety of apple pies, cakes, and crisps — in the spring of 2020 while developing the drink.
«Creating an ingredient with a spicy baked-apple flavor was crucial to be able to bridge an autumn-red apple to espresso,» Raegan Powell, the senior manager on Starbucks’ research and development team, told Insider. «The number one thing we heard when developing the ingredients was that customers wanted more apple.»
So did they deliver? I went to my local Starbucks to find out.
Since I always get my coffee cold, I decided to try the iced Apple Crisp Macchiato first
I got a preview of the new beverages at my local Starbucks a week before they were released to the public. First, I picked up my iced Apple Crisp Macchiato, which had caramel streaks running down the creamy middle and a dark-red bottom.
When I took my first sip, I was shocked at how intense the coffee flavor tasted. It overpowered everything and was way too strong for me.
But after I gave the drink a big stir with my straw, it completely changed.
The apple flavor came through nicely, although it was more subtle than I had expected, and I could taste the hints of cinnamon.
It also wasn’t overly sweet, which I liked as I’ve always found the PSL to be far too sugary to enjoy as an everyday coffee.
The iced Apple Crisp Macchiato was definitely nice and refreshing, and I could taste that hint of autumn inspiration. But, overall, the flavor didn’t really stand out to me the way new Starbucks’ drinks had in the past.
Next up was the hot Apple Crisp Macchiato, which really felt like fall in a cup
Have you ever been on a walk through Central Park in October, when the leaves have all turned into brilliant shades of orange, yellow, and red, and it feels like you’re strolling through a Nora Ephron film?
I know, I know, those don’t sound like the words of a girl who hates fall. But even I can sometimes embrace a little autumn, especially if it involves a drink as tasty as this one.
The hot Apple Crisp Macchiato tasted really nice and crisp. The apple flavor came through much stronger than it did in the iced version, and the warm cinnamon notes made every sip so comforting.
And I absolutely loved the foam on top with the caramelized-spiced apple drizzle. It sounds like it might make the drink too sweet, but the flavors were well-balanced. I licked my cap clean to get every last drop of it.
Starbucks’ Apple Crisp Macchiato is a great way to welcome fall, even if you hate the change of seasons
I’ve never understood the appeal of apple picking, but I think I’d be down if I had the hot Apple Crisp Macchiato in my hand. Starbucks’ new autumn drink is especially great for coffee fans who don’t love the super sweet sips of a PSL, but still want something comforting to match the chilly season.
Sweater weather is always a bummer, but at least there’s a comforting new coffee on the horizon.

Homemade Apple Crisp Macchiato
Starbucks’ apple crisp macchiato has quickly become a fall favorite. It blends fall flavors and spices together with coffee and reminds us all of our favorite apple pie. And thankfully, it’s easy to replicate at home!
Why this drink works
If mixing apple and coffee flavors together doesn’t sound super appealing to you at first, don’t worry! Just like with pumpkin spice syrup, it’s really about the spices and not so much the actual apple flavor.
Traditionally, apple pie uses cinnamon and nutmeg as the base spices. Then, based on preference, you may see cardamom, allspice or ginger added also. All of those spices pair well with espresso and make this drink delicious.
Ingredients in this drink
This recipe has the classic ingredients you’d use for a latte or macchiato-style drink: syrup, espresso, milk, and toppings.
Syrup
Starbucks uses apple brown sugar syrup as the base flavor for this drink. (If you want to make a similar syrup at home, check out the apple brown sugar simple syrup recipe I’ve created. It’s simple and delish!)
Espresso
Of course, if you order this at Starbucks, it will include espresso. If you want to make it at home, use espresso if you have an espresso machine or you can use double-strength brewed coffee.
Milk
The Starbucks default on this drink is 2% dairy milk, as it is on most of their drinks. If you want an alternate option, I highly suggest oat milk. (Think about how well oatmeal and apples pair together!)
Toppings
This drink is topped with an apple crisp drizzle at Starbucks. This drizzle is different than the syrup mixed into the bottom of the drink.
But, for making it at home, I suggest using the same apple brown sugar syrup you use in the drink as a drizzle or using caramel sauce. OR, if you want to be really fancy, mix caramel sauce together with the syrup!
What is a macchiato?
This apple crisp macchiato is something I’d call “macchiato-style” as opposed to a true macchiato. This is the same style as Starbucks’ caramel macchiato.
A true macchiato is a drink made with one or two shots of espresso and then marked with a bit of milk. In total, it’s only a few ounces.
The Starbucks “macchiato-style” that is used in this drink is more similar to a traditional latte. The difference between this and a latte is that instead of adding the espresso to the bottom of the drink and then adding the milk on top, the milk is first poured into the drink and then the espresso is added on top.
This creates a different taste as the espresso is not blended as thoroughly throughout the drink as it is with a latte. It ends up creating a layered drink where you taste a slightly different flavor with each sip.
Does the apple crisp macchiato have coffee in it?
Yes, it does have coffee, espresso specifically. If you want a caffeine-free option, you can use decaf espresso or use the apple brown sugar syrup to make a steamer without adding coffee.
Is the apple crisp macchiato dairy-free?
The Starbucks default for this drink is not dairy-free, but if you make it at home, it’s easy to make dairy-free. Choose a non-dairy milk like oat milk to use and make my homemade apple brown sugar syrup. I then suggest using the same syrup as a topping too. Be careful if you decide to use caramel sauce, as that often includes dairy.
Can I make this iced?
Yes, it’s easy to make this drink iced. Follow the same process as below but make sure your milk is cold, and use a bit less so you have room for the ice. Add the ice in after you add syrup to the drink but before the milk and espresso.

Three words: Apple Crisp Macchiato.
It actually even sounds a little better to me than Pumpkin Spice Latte!
Y’all know you can count on me when it comes to Starbucks copycat recipes. My take on Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso had you talking for DAYS!
Many of you still comment on how easy it is to make brown sugar syrup!
Now I’m back with what I think is going to be the biggest drop since the Pumpkin Spice Latte!
On August 24, 2021, Starbucks officially released its fall menu, and the Apple Crisp Macchiato.
I had a feeling this drink was coming, and I prepped. That preparation paid off because with a few tweaks, I’ve made a really delicious version of this that you can replicate easily at home.
What’s in the Apple Crisp Macchiato?
It’s pretty straight-forward! I had most of these ingredients as basics in my pantry:
- Brown sugar*
- Vanilla Syrup*
- Apple Juice
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Ginger
- Whipped Topping & Caramel Drizzle*
- Espresso
- Oatmilk
Starbucks lists their ingredients in the Apple Crisp Macchiato as: Milk, Brewed Espresso, Apple Brown Sugar Syrup [Invert Sugar, Water, Brown Sugar, Natural Flavors, Salt, Preservative Potassium Sorbate, Malic Acid], Spiced Apple Drizzle [Sugars (Sugar, Brown Sugar), Water, Apple Juice Concentrate, Apple Puree, Ground Cinnamon, Pectin, Preservative Potassium Sorbate, Salt, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Malic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Caramelized Sugar (For Color), Natural Flavor, Ground Nutmeg]
A few things to note about my recipe:
- Anything with a * means there’s a sugar-free version available! I used sugar-free ingredients there to keep the carb count a bit lower.
- Oat milk is going to be higher carb typically, and you can always sub for unsweetened almond milk if you want, but it’s not the same.
- You can make this an iced version, just fill your glass with ice and you’re good to go!
- Carb count is calculated with sugar-free ingredients as noted in the recipe card. If you use full sugar ingredients, you will need to recalculate your macros.

Ingredients
What’s in an apple crisp macchiato? Let’s explore what goes into this delicious fall beverage!
- Apple Crisp Syrup: This is the key ingredient in the apple crisp macchiato! It’s basically a simple syrup made with dark brown sugar and concentrated apple juice, and then infused with apple puree, cinnamon, and nutmeg. A tiny hint of lemon is added, too.
- Brown Sugar Syrup: This is a simple combination of equal amounts of dark brown sugar and water.
- Milk: Starbucks uses USDA Organic 2% milk (T.G. Lee in the South), but substitute with your favorite non-dairy alternative if you are vegan or lactose intolerant.
- Coffee: Use espresso or moka pot coffee for this macchiato. Starbucks uses their Espresso Roast beans.
How to Make
2. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer on low heat for 15 minutes, then remove the cinnamon sticks.
3. Heat the milk to between 131-143°F in a saucepan over medium heat. Use a digital thermometer for best accuracy.
4. Pour 1 fl oz (2 tablespoons) of the brown sugar simple syrup into a tall 16 ounce glass.
5. Add ¾ cup of steamed milk.
6. Add 2 shots of espresso. (Since I’m using moka pot coffee and not «real» espresso, I used the traditional definition of a shot equaling 2 tablespoons [1 fl oz], but Starbucks’ shots are only 0.75 fl oz.)
7. Foam ¼ cup of steamed milk with a milk frother or steam wand, then pour on top. Garnish the macchiato with a crosshatched pattern of the apple crisp syrup. Enjoy!
Recipe FAQs
This is a coffee drink made with 2 shots of espresso, two kinds of syrups (apple crisp syrup and brown sugar simple syrup), and steamed milk. It’s available hot, iced, or as a frappuccino. This macchiato was originally released by Starbucks on August 24, 2021 as a new addition to their fall lineup.
The iced macchiato highlights more the buttery apple flavor of the syrup rather than the caramel, since it doesn’t dissolve as well in the cold drink. The spices are very subtle, and the sweetness is reduced compared to the hot macchiato.
Yes, this apple crisp macchiato contains cinnamon in the apple crisp syrup, which really ups the flavor!
It’s simply a matter of personal preference. Starbucks’ hot macchiato has a delightful spiced apple flavor without being exceedingly sweet. The coffee flavor is very subtle, as the drink is mostly milk. It has a smooth mouthfeel with a slightly artificial aftertaste. The iced version is less sweet, and the apple flavor is more dominant than the caramel.
Pro Tips
- Make Ahead: Make a double or triple batch of the syrups and store them in large bottles with a syrup pump on top. At Starbucks, one pump of syrup is equal to 1 fl oz (2 tablespoons). Be sure to refrigerate the syrups.
- Don’t own an espresso machine? Use a moka pot to brew the coffee for the macchiato instead.
- Want the best coffee flavor? Use single origin medium or dark roast coffee beans roasted within a week, grind to the correct size, and brew with filtered water.
- Espresso Shot Size: Starbucks doesn’t use the traditional 1 fl oz shot; they use a 0.75 fl oz shot to save money. Since I’m using moka pot coffee instead of real espresso, I used the traditional shot size.
- Frappuccino: Pour the ingredients into a blender along with ½-1 cup of ice and ⅛-1/4 teaspoon of xanthan gum, then blend until smooth. Garnish with whipped cream and a drizzle of apple crisp syrup. (Note: Starbucks uses Starbucks VIA Instant Italian Roast [affiliate] in frapps.)
