Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams

Use these tips to avoid scams and learn what to do if you receive suspicious emails, phone calls, or other messages.

If you receive a suspicious email that looks like it’s supposed to be from Apple, please forward it to reportphishing@apple.com. 1

Phishing refers to fraudulent attempts to get personal information from you, usually by email. But scammers use any means they can to trick you into sharing information or giving them money, including:

  • Fraudulent emails and other messages that look like they’re from legitimate companies, including Apple
  • Misleading pop-ups and ads that say your device has a security problem
  • Scam phone calls or voicemails that impersonate Apple Support
  • Fake promotions that offer free products and prizes
  • Unwanted Calendar invitations and subscriptions

If you’re suspicious about an unexpected message, call, or request for personal information or money, it’s safer to presume it’s a scam and contact that company directly if you need to. If you’re concerned about a security issue with your Apple device, you can get help from Apple.

If you believe that your Apple ID has been compromised, or if you might have entered your password or other personal info on a scam website, change your Apple ID password immediately.

How to protect your Apple account and devices

Here are some things you can do to avoid scams that target your Apple account and devices.

Complimentary Support

What is complimentary support?

Complimentary hardware support provides telephone support for basic setup, installation, assembly, and connectivity. See the support-related materials included with your Apple product for more information.

Complimentary software support provides telephone support for installation, launch, or reinstallation (not including data recovery) when your hardware configuration meets the minimum system requirements for the software. See the support-related materials included with your Apple product for more information.

How much complimentary support do I get?

Most Apple software and hardware products include unlimited complimentary support incidents within the first 90 days of product ownership, or longer if required by applicable law. Apple Watch Edition comes with 2 years of complimentary support. See the support-related materials included with your Apple product or visit the AppleCare Products page for more information.

How does Apple define “support incident?”

Apple defines a support incident as a specific, discrete issue that can be addressed by isolating its origin to a single cause. Apple, in its sole discretion, will determine what constitutes a support incident. A support incident has reached resolution when the customer receives one of the following:

  • Information that resolves the issue
  • Information on how to obtain a software solution that will resolve the issue
  • Notice that the issue is caused by a known, unresolved issue or an incompatibility issue with the supported product
  • Information that identifies the issue as being resolved by upgrading to a newer release of the supported product
  • Notice that the issue has been identified as a hardware equipment issue
  • Information that isolates issue to a third-party product, not supported by Apple

Detect and block spam phone calls

You can use Silence Unknown Callers or a third-party app to block spam calls on your iPhone.

Turn on Silence Unknown Callers

With iOS 13 and later, you can turn on Silence Unknown Callers to avoid getting calls from people you don’t know. This blocks phone numbers that you’ve never been in contact with and don’t have saved in your contacts list. If you’ve previously texted with someone using their phone number or if a person has shared their phone number with you in an email, a phone call from that number will go through.

To turn on Silence Unknown Callers, go to Settings > Phone, then scroll down, tap Silence Unknown Callers, and turn on the feature. Calls from unknown numbers are silenced and sent to your voicemail, and appear in your recent calls list.

Incoming calls will come through from people that are saved in your contacts list, recent calls list, and from Siri Suggestions to let you know who’s calling based on phone numbers included in your emails or text messages.

If an emergency call is placed, Silence Unknown Callers will be temporarily disabled for the next 24 hours to allow for your iPhone to be reached.

Before you turn on Silence Unknown Callers, make sure you have important contacts saved or you could miss a phone call that you don’t want to miss. The call will still go to voicemail and appear in your recent calls list, but you won’t get a notification while the call is ringing.

Set up an app to filter and detect spam calls

  1. Go to the App Store and download an app that detects and blocks spam phone calls. You can download and install multiple apps with this feature from different app developers.
  2. Go to Settings > Phone.
  3. Tap Call Blocking & Identification.
  4. Under Allow These Apps To Block Calls And Provide Caller ID, turn the app on or off. You can also reorder the apps based on priority. Just tap Edit and then drag the apps in the order you want them.

Phone numbers that appear under Blocked Contacts are numbers that you manually block.

When you receive a call, your device checks the caller’s number and compares it to the list of phone numbers in your third-party spam apps. If there’s a match, iOS displays the identifying label chosen by the app, for example Spam or Telemarketing. If the app determines that a phone number is spam, it may choose to block the phone call automatically. Incoming calls are never sent to third-party developers.

If you determine that a number is from a spam caller, you can block the number manually on your device. Phone numbers that you manually block appear under Blocked Contacts.

If you no longer want to use the app, you can remove it.

Use your mobile phone number as your Apple ID

When you create a new Apple ID in some countries or regions, you can use your mobile phone number as your Apple ID username.

Here’s how it works

Any time you set up an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you have the option to sign in with your existing Apple ID or create a new account. If you create a new Apple ID on an iPhone in iOS 11 or later, you can use your mobile phone number as your username in China mainland and India. If you live in China mainland, use your (+86) mobile phone number. If you live in India, use your (+91) number. Depending on your carrier, you might also be able to create a new account with a phone number on some Android devices, smart TVs, and streaming devices. Just choose Create Your Apple ID from the Apple ID sign in screen and follow the instructions to create your new account.

Once your account is created, you can use it to sign in to any Apple device or service. Whenever you sign in to a new device, app, or service, you’ll enter your mobile phone number—including the country code—and your password. Be sure to use the same Apple ID everywhere you sign in so that your Apple devices and services work together seamlessly.

If you already have an Apple ID that’s an email address, you might not be able to change it to a mobile phone number. However, you can associate your account with different phone numbers or email addresses on your Apple ID account page.

What you need

Here’s what you need to use your mobile phone number as your Apple ID to sign in:

  • iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 11 or later
  • Mac with macOS High Sierra or later
  • Apple Watch with watchOS 4 or later
  • Apple TV with tvOS 11 or later
  • Apple.com, iCloud.com, and other Apple web properties*
  • Apple services on third-party devices

*Depending on how you created your Apple ID, you might be prompted to change your username from a phone number to an email address. You might also need to provide additional information.

Account security

Depending on where you created your account and how much personal information is associated with it, account security requirements might vary. When using an Apple device, it’s best to use two-factor authentication. In some cases, you might be prompted to review or upgrade your security when signing in on an Apple device or an Apple website.

Messages from Apple

Since there isn’t an email address associated with a phone number-based Apple ID, communications from Apple come to you through Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, and your Apple ID account page.

To make sure that you receive important account-related messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, sign in to iCloud, iMessage, and FaceTime with your phone number Apple ID. If you sign in to iCloud on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch without a SIM card, you can’t use FaceTime and iMessage. You can always see your messages from Apple on your Apple ID account page.

Change your Apple ID to a different mobile phone number

Depending on the country or region that you live in and how you created your Apple ID, you might be able to change your Apple ID to a different mobile phone number from your Apple ID account page or on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

In China mainland, your new Apple ID must be another (+86) mobile phone number. In India, your new Apple ID must be another (+91) mobile phone number.

From your Apple ID account page

  1. Sign out of every Apple service and device that uses your Apple ID.
  2. Go to appleid.apple.com and sign in.
  3. In the Account section, click Edit.
  4. Under your Apple ID, click Change Apple ID.
  5. After you enter the mobile phone number that you want to use as your Apple ID, a verification code is sent to you at that number. Enter the verification code from the text into the fields provided.
  6. Sign back in to all Apple services with your new Apple ID.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Sign out of every Apple service and device that uses your Apple ID, except the one you’re using to change your Apple ID.
  2. Go to Settings > [your name] > Name, Phone Numbers, Email.
  3. Next to Reachable At, tap Edit > Delete.
  4. Tap Continue and follow the instructions.
  5. After you enter the mobile phone number that you want to use as your Apple ID, a verification code is sent to you at that number. Enter the verification code from the text into the fields provided.
  6. Sign back in to all Apple services with your new Apple ID.

If your new mobile phone number is already connected to your Apple ID as an iMessage phone number, shared phone number, or trusted phone number, then you don’t need to verify it.

Didn’t get a code? If you use iOS 11.3 or later on your iPhone, you might not need to enter a verification code. In some cases, your trusted phone number can be automatically verified in the background on your iPhone. It’s one less thing to do, and your account is still protected with two-factor authentication.

If you move to a different country or region

You can change your username to a new mobile phone number. Make sure that the mobile phone number can be verified by SMS. First, change your Apple ID country or region. Then follow the steps to change your Apple ID to a new mobile phone number.
