The Big Apple: How NYC Got Its Name
TripSavvy / Brakethrough Media
New York, New York, the most populous city in the United States, has been given many nicknames, including The City That Never Sleeps, Empire City, and Gotham—but perhaps the most famous one of all is the Big Apple.
The nickname «The Big Apple» originated in the 1920s in reference to the prizes (or «big apples») rewarded at the many racing courses in and around New York City. However, it wasn’t officially adopted as the city’s nickname until 1971 as the result of a successful ad campaign intended to attract tourists.
Throughout its history, the term «big apple» has always come down to simply mean the best and biggest of places to be, and New York City has long lived up to its nickname. Once you visit this seven-mile-long city, you’ll truly understand why it’s called the Capital of the World and the Big Apple.
The Big Reward: From Racing to Jazz
The first mention of New York City as «The Big Apple» was in the 1909 book «The Wayfarer in New York.» In the introduction, Edward Martin writes about the dynamic between NYC and the Midwest, using the apple as an extended metaphor:
«New York is merely one of the fruits of that great tree whose roots go down in the Mississippi Valley, and whose branches spread from one ocean to the other, but the tree has no great degree of affection for its fruit. It inclines to think that the big apple gets a disproportionate share of the national sap. It is disturbed by the enormous drawing power of a metropolis which constantly attracts to itself wealth and its possessors from all the lesser centers of the land. Every city, every State pays an annual tribute of men and of business to New York, and no State or city likes particularly to do it.»
The term only started gaining traction when sports writer John J. Fitz Gerald began writing about the city’s horse races for the New York Morning Telegraph. In his column, he wrote that these were «the big apples» of competitive racing in the United States.
Fitz Gerald got the term from African American stable hands in New Orleans; jockeys and trainers who aspired to race on New York City tracks referred to the money prizes as the «Big Apple. He once explained the term in an article for the Morning Telegraph:
«The Big Apple. The dream of every lad that ever threw a leg over a thoroughbred and the goal of all horsemen. There’s only one Big Apple. That’s New York.»
Although the audience for Fitz Gerald’s articles was markedly smaller than most, the concept of «big apple» representing the best of the best—or most-sought-after of rewards or accomplishments—began to popularize across the country.
In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the nickname started to become well known outside of the northeast, as New York City’s jazz musicians began referring to New York City as the «Big Apple» in their songs. An old saying in show business was «There are many apples on the tree, but only one Big Apple.» New York City was (and is) the premier place for jazz musicians to perform, which made it more common to refer to New York City as the Big Apple.
A Bad Reputation for the Big Apple
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, New York City was quickly earning a national reputation as a dark and dangerous city. To increase tourism to New York City in 1971, the city launched an ad campaign with Charles Gillett, president of the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau, at the helm. A fan of jazz, he wanted to restore the city to its former glory by adopting the Big Apple as an officially recognized reference to New York City.
The campaign featured red apples in an effort to lure visitors to New York City. The red apples, intended to serve as a bright and cheery image of the city, would stand in contrast to the common belief that New York City was riddled with crime and poverty. T-shirts, pins, and stickers promoting the «Big Apple» quickly became popular, thanks in part to the help of celebrities like New York Knicks legend Dave DeBusschere—and the city welcomed tourists to «take a bite out of the Big Apple.»
Since the conclusion of the campaign—and subsequent «rebranding» of the city—New York City has officially been nicknamed The Big Apple. In recognition of Fitz Gerald, the corner of 54th and Broadway (where Fitz Gerald lived for 30 years) was renamed «Big Apple Corner» in 1997.

Juergen Eisler [ ]
A German-American Manhattan banker who is well-known on Wall Street. He pulls Johan towards him when he arrives home. Juergen informs him he was sleeping, until awoken by Johan’s honest comment about how handsome he is. With Johan having a task Juergen raised how his company was ordering people around so early in the morning before stating that the company was such a mess. Embracing him Juergen tells Johan that having a good salary and having bad health are two different things then adds for him to not overwork himself. Wondering if something happened and whether Johan got scolded at work again Juergen reviews his tone at noticing the band aid on Johan’s face. Angered he questions who did this. In all seriousness Juergen asks if Johan would want to live with him in his house after all. Juergen finds it cute and obvious when Johan is lying.
Robert (Fire Sorcerer) [ ]
Joining Johan on the rooftop this colleague of the Templar Knights thought he would notice him and the other members he is with. With Johan’s troubled expression he offers to help and says if he comes with them quietly he will spare his life, of course it is fine if Johan rebels too. Wielding a supernatural power he can break a handgun in two. Considering Johan more uninteresting than he thought he wishes they could play in a manner a bit more amusing. When Johan escapes him he reflects how he will need to take back what was said. He alerts his comrades that Johan must have other colleagues nearby and to search thoroughly.
Razaliev Sergei [ ]
From the Russian mafia he holds a key position in Chechnya. In New York Razaliev glances towards Johan’s telescopic sight of his sniper rifle and grins.
Esper [ ]
Along with the Wind Sorcerer he has been instructed to defend Johan but does add that they really do not look out for him that much. Regarding the mission Esper comments that a failure is a failure and there are no excuses. As Johan trembles Esper questions whether he is going to keep looking so miserable. Since they can die whenever he feels there is nothing weird about it.
Wind Sorcerer [ ]
After helping Johan he enquires about the mission. Hearing it was a failure he suggests for the time being they talk about it later.
Story [ ]
Juergen knows nothing of Johan’s profession
Within New York at night Johan considers his job before returning to Juergen. [1] Somewhere in the city there are deals dirtier than a sewer and more valuable than gold being handled. Biochemical weapons and drugs are involved in some assignments Johan is sent to handle. After one, Johan receives a call from Juergen but decides to answer later. It is recalled how Johan was cornered by a fire sorcerer. [2] Three weeks ago Johan was preparing for work in his apartment with Juergen. Headquarters sends down a mission by having the assignment ready in Johan’s work locker. He sees one that concerns the Russian mafia. [3]
Johan is found and attacked by a fire sorcerer of the Templar Knights
It is raining as Yohan gains access to a rooftop with thirty minutes before a scheduled arrival being enough time. Although Johan thinks that Razaliev Sergei looked towards him he successfully eliminates him as the target. With others coming up the abandoned building stairway Johan processes that there should not be a sorcerer on the Chechnya side. Joined by members of the Templar Knights, Johan finds his gun broken. [4] The fire sorcerer draws a large sword and means to capture Johan. Thinking that he must be tremendously strong to be able to use fire magic when it is raining Johan is unable to overcome this threat. Using a smoke grenade and a blown off part of the railing against the fire sorcerer Johan then drops off the building. [5]
Returning with Esper and the Wind Sorcerer
Having been saved by Esper and the Wind Sorcerer they drive away as Johan considers what happened. It is recalled how Johan was against becoming the Secret Intelligence Service. [6] Returning to the New York branch of the organization Johan feels bad about the way other members are looking at him. The mission they had been clinging onto for the past three weeks was a failure. If they had intel that the Chechens had joined leagues with the Templar Knights they would have prepared accordingly. Johan is told to return home and thinks about his job. Missing Juergen he is concerned at evidence of the Templar Knights being in their home then prepares his gun. [7] Juergen returns and seeing Johan with a plaster he states if he knew something like this would happen he would have come earlier to be with him. Johan means to shower alone and was all the while hiding the Templar Knight’s jacket from Juergen. Having grown bored of sitting by himself Juergen joins Johan in the shower. [8]
In bed together Johan mentions how Juergen did not return his calls. It is recollected that Johan had to be ready to cut all ties at a moment’s notice when he was first beginning his career. Needing some space Johan went to a bar where he was introduced to Juergen. [9] As they were intimate in the wash room Johan found the pleasure came ahead of the pain. Juergen thought they were a good fit so they continued to meet one another. At some point they took each other’s apartment keys and naturally they became lovers, but that was all, they did not know anything about one another. [10]
