Photojojo.

The iphone slr mount

By Charlie Sorrel • 7:30 am, December 4, 2012

Imagine, if you will, a world where cellphone cameras and SLRs get along. A world where one was never teased by the other. Imagine a world where Canon and Nikon lenses can be used as easily on an iPhone as they can on their own bodies.

Now open your eyes and look around. How do you feel? Does anything look any different? It should, because the whole world just changed. Behold! The iPhone SLR Mount.

The mount comes via those fine futurists at Photojojo, and takes the form of an iPhone case and an adapter. The case has a screw mount over the lens, onto which your Canon or Nikon adapter screws. Then you just bayonet your lens of choice into place.

None of the auto features are preserved, of course, but if you can live with manual focus you’ll be rewarded with fantastic shallow-depth-of-field shots and all the other good things your collection of SLR lenses bring.

The mount even had a strap mount so you can hang the lens around your neck.

The rub is that this setup costs $250, and what you end up with is a novelty setup at best. It could be good for film makers I guess, but I don’t see how wrangling a big manual focus lens on a teeny, tiny camera body is easier than popping an Eye-Fi card into your SLR and beaming the results direct to your iPhone’s camera roll for processing.

Still, I’d totally try one out.

Both Canon and Nikon adapters are available now.

Adapter lets you mount SLR lenses on iPhone

There’s little doubt that when it comes to snapping spur-of-the-moment photos, nothing quite matches the always-ready convenience of the smartphone. Apple’s iPhone is second only in popularity to Nikon’s D90 for overall image uploads to Flickr, and takes the top three spots in the Cameraphone category. There are now a whole host of apps available that can help add numerous clever effects to the photos taken with an iPhone’s camera, and a growing number of hardware-based enhancements. If you find yourself yearning for a little more zoom than the Eye Scope offers, or the close-up goodness of the Fisheye and Macro/Wide Angle lens is just too small and fiddly for you, then perhaps what you need is an iPhone SLR Lens Mount.

The iPhone SLR Mount from Photojojo is essentially a phone case that acts as an adapter for either Nikon F-mount or Canon EF-mount lenses (although it’s not compatible with Canon EF-S or FD lenses). Placing your Apple smartphone into the tough but lightweight aluminum casing allows you to choose from your collection of telephoto, wide-angle, macro or fish-eye SLR lenses and use it with the iPhone’s camera.

It’s kind of a first step towards bringing the conceptual WVIL proposal to life. Of course, autofocus is not available, the absence of a mirror means that images will appear upside down, and there’s no supersonic dust reduction system so you’ll have to keep the focusing screen free of dirt and dust yourself — but if you want professional-looking depth of field effects, or the ability to bring a distant object into close focus or pop on a fish-eye lens for some wide angle fun, this could be your answer.

Naturally, there are a few other limitations to consider — including a possible loss of image brightness (which can be corrected using the aperture ring on older SLR lenses or via editing software if using newer ones) — but the iPhone SLR Mount certainly looks to be a step in the right direction. The solution comes supplied with a UV filter, includes strap loopholes to allow you to hang your iPhone/SLR lens mash-up from your neck, and it features a tripod attachment.

Photojojo says that iPhoneographers can expect the iPhone SLR Mount to be available from the middle of August at a cost of US$249, for either the Canon or the Nikon flavor.

iPhone SLR Mount : When iPhone Uses DSLR Lens

iPhone SLR Mount enables iPhone to use DSLR lens which is basically a case for iPhone to adapt the Lens of DSLR cameras from Canon or Nikon. The massive case is made of aluminum. It has two loops for attaching a strap and a standard location for mounting on a tripod. Obviously, the focus must be done manually on the lens.

iPhone SLR Mount Basic Details

Obviously, it have to taken that the user has both an iPhone and a DSLR. It is possibly too much too think of buying DSLR lenses only for mounting on iPhone. However, as we are using a phone, we need some basic knowledge of Phone Camera Photography first :

Apparently, iPhone SLR Mount is manufactured by 2-3 brands, most pronounced are Photojojo with the name iPhone SLR Mount and priced at $250 (one dollar less in real) and SLR Jacket by TurtleBack which is a bit less costly. The thing is nothing but a mechanical arrangement to mount the lens so that the optical axis of DSLR Lens remains in the same line that of iPhone’s main camera. In other words, it might sound very very promising, but from practical aspect, iPhone becomes dependent on the size of the Lens!

iPhone SLR Mount : When iPhone Uses DSLR Lens

MacLife reviewed TurtleBack’s one, gave a score of 2/5 and we this time used Photojojo’s one, which probably optically fits in a better way – simply if you notice the photos you will understand, it is not the Lens but the sensor, imaging engine making the ‘hardware’ a bit less effective. Photojojo should be rated 3/5 for their iPhone SLR Mount .

Probably the apparently not understandable position of the iPhone camera or may be the iPhone tag makes it too costly – $250 honestly is too much to use the iPhone Sensor. You practically only can reduce the bulk of DSLR camera body, if you want to use it seriously. The result with Photojojo’s iPhone SLR Mount is definitely far above what normal iPhone can do, simply because of the optical effects exerted by the lens. But it is the iPhone’s sensor size – that is crop factor plus other technical things make the investment, from our point of view – costly. Our view is from a typical DSLR user, obviously if you do not have a DSLR but want to combine with Canon’s 50 mm prime Lens (Nifty Fifty) – the total cost becomes around $350.

In this situation, we would have to assume many things – as if I do not have a DSLR but want to buy in future, then possibly this is not very bad option. It is impractical to carry this setup outside from my personal point of view. Additionally, there is enough chance of damage of the lens as the balance of the thing is totally getting disturbed. Most practical, unbiased experience is given by Nicholas Carlson, though he used the Turtleback’s one (we have used his images, they are quite great), you can read it :

He wrote it quite seriously – with Pros, Cons and with demonstration of all possible way of usage !
