They cannot be played on this iphone

Question: Q: Video cannot be played on this iPhone

I remuxed a show from mkv using subler to turn it into an m4v with an ac3 track and aac 2 ch. track. It plays fineon my mac and through my network with my apple tv and iPhone using home sharing. How ever when I try to sync the video to my iPhone so I can watch it on the go it gives me an error saying «. were not copied to the iPhone because they cannot be played on this iPhone.» I can get it to say something along the lines of the video being an unsupported format if I individually click the files on the error window. Why is it doing this? The files are obviously in the correct format because they play fine on the apple tv, mac, and even the iPhone I am trying to sync them to if I am using home sharing.

Here are the video file stats. I have 2 seasons worth of this show remuxed and all of the episodes refuse to sync.

iTunes: May be unable to transfer videos to iPhone, iPad, or iPod — http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1497 — incompatible format for devices.

I don’t understand what is wrong with the formatting of the video. It plays fine on itunes and on both my apple tv and the iPhone that I am trying to sync it to when I used home sharing.

The file is a H.264 in a M4V container which is what iTunes uses. It is in 1280×720 which the iPhone supports and contains an AAC-2ch track with a AC3 surround track exactly like the movies from iTunes.

Song cannot be played on this iPhone

I have recently added a number of songs to my iTunes playlist (all mp3s). When syncing them over to my iPhone I get an error saying that ‘X track cannot be played on this iPhone’.

What could be the reason for this? The file isn’t from the iTunes store so I don’t think DRM on the track.

What could be the issue?

iTunes might be refusing to sync the tracks because they use an encoding format that it knows isn’t supported on iOS devices. As an example, the iPhone 5s technical specification on Apple’s website lists the supported bitrates for constant rate MP3s as «8 to 320 Kbps». If the bitrate for the files is outwith those limits that might be the cause of the failure to sync the files.

You could try using the «Create AAC Version» option on the right-click context menu in iTunes to create a copy in AAC format of one of the affected tracks, then attempt to sync the AAC copy, to see whether it is the format of the file that it is objecting to.

You can also confirm the bitrate of the files by right-clicking on them and choosing Get Info.

I had this issue this morning. I had to force quit iTunes, unplug my iPhone, reboot it, then reconnect it and sync the playlists that wouldn’t sync earlier. It seemed to work, as I now have those playlists. I think iTunes experienced a technical issue somehow with its encoding process.

One way to confirm whether the files are really just MP3 files is to open them in QuickTime and then open the Inspector (hold ⌘ and tap I or choose from Show Inspector from Window menu). The Inspector will tell you the file type (if it recognises it).

If these are MP3 files it should say something that starts with «MPEG Layer 3» for the format. If it doesn’t then either it isn’t an MP3 file, or it is but one that is corrupted in some way.

Assuming these are simple MP3 files, having looked at other reports of people getting the same error message, have you tried removing the files from your iPhone and syncing them back over again. It seems people can get this error if the files are corrupted while syncing.

Question: Q: «Ringtone cant be played on this iPhone»

See Create and manage ringtones in iTunes. In some cases you may need to remove all custom ringtones from a device before you can reintroduce them and have them work.

A few different points.

— its a new phone. I transferred everything (ringtones) from my last phone fine.

— I added one new ringtone (my own)

— unable to add a second ringtone (my own)

— On iTunes, all the transferred ringtones are greyed out, with the hashed circle. But still work fine on the iPhone

— The first added ringtone, is black and looks normal. Even transferred to the iPhone fine

— Second ringtone is greyed, and i get the message that it cant be played on this iPhone when I try to synch

Makes no sense to me. One works, the other doesnt. All, except one, are greyed out on iTunes..

Question: Q: Some items were not copied to the iphone «. » because they cannot be played

Have had no trouble at all making mp3s of my music in Cubase, then transferring them onto my iphone XR to listen to.

Despite iTunes being radically changed, or eliminated from the process altogether, it was still working, but now for some dang reason I get the error message:

Some items were not copied to the iPhone “********’s iPhone” because they cannot be played on this iPhone.

Come on tekmology. Stop moving the goalposts!! I haven’t changed anything about how I export the mp3 files, so the problem is somewhere in this new environment thrust upon us.

Any ideas very welcome!!

iPhone XR, iOS 13

The problem of iTunes/Apple Music not syncing a phone isn’t new. It sometimes «just happens». (That’s not helping, I know).

I don’t know any better approach than to firstly try to narrow down the problem.

First of all, it seems that nowadays syncing isn’t managed by (former) iTunes, but Finder .

Files not syncing:

  • Are all Cubase-exports not exporting to your XR?
  • Check wether one of those not syncing Songs get synced as a AAC-file, or as an imported duplicate. Couldn’t it be that some files are corrupted?

Phone not syncing:

  • What changes did you make that should be synced? Play-lists? Meta-Data / mp3-tags?
  • Before going to drastic measures, try to make small steps:
  • See if you can make a fresh backup (if you can, it’s not broken, and you have a fresh backup)
  • See if you can sync or «unsync» a playlist (remove from XR)
  • See if you can sync or unsync apps (Add one to the phone, remove something expendable from the phone)

I sometimes had to remove all music and re-sync it completely, and I also had to reset the phone to get rid of the problem.

A bit like when we had to tap on a thermometer’s glass to have it updating the needle’s position.

Question: Q: iTunes won’t copy song, it cannot be played on iPhone.

Out of 50+ songs in my library, only one has this issue. Its format is no different from the others; I have tried deleting and re-installing the song. I have also tried unchecking the «Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC» option in my iPhone settings, but the box was unchecked to begin with. I have also tried to create a compatible version («File > Create new version > iPod or iPhone version»). It won’t even give me the option of doing so. Is it just the song? Should I give up on it?

It is just the song. Try deleting it from the library and ripping it again.

Where did the song come from?

how was it added to iTunes?

Jun 25, 2014 6:44 PM

I had the mp3 ripped onto my computer from a CD; all the other songs from the album have synced just fine!

I know you’ve solved the issue by re-ripping, but I have found an alternate workaround to the dreaded «cannot be played on this iPod» error. I’m posting it because 1) I have encountered the error numerous times and it takes me awhile to remember the fix and 2) I searched the discussion boards and did not find anyone posting this particular method.

I’ve encountered numerous files (most of which I ripped from CDs YEARS ago) that will play in iTunes but not copy to an iPod, with the «cannot be played» error. Attempting to convert them to MP3 within iTunes results in an «error -50» which is of zero help. What I discovered is that when I look at the files in the Finder, they are invariably listed as «MPEG» not «MP3». Correcting them is simple, but it can be a tedious one-at-a-time process if you have a lot of them. The process is as follows:

1. Highlight the song in iTunes.

2. Right-click (ctrl-click) on the song and select «Show in Finder».

3. Assuming the file kind is «MPEG» or something other than «MP3», edit the filename and add «.mp3» to the end of it.

4. Go back into iTunes and PLAY THE SONG. This is important, if you don’t play the song, iTunes apparently doesn’t recognize the change. You don’t need to play the entire song, just a few seconds will do.

5. Sync your iPod. The songs should now copy properly.
