How to use account recovery when you can’t reset your Apple ID password

If you use two-factor authentication and can’t sign in or reset your password, you can regain access after an account recovery waiting period.

What is account recovery?

Account recovery is a process designed to get you back into your Apple ID account when you don’t have enough information to reset your password. For security reasons, it might take several days or longer before you can use your account again. We know this delay is inconvenient, but it’s important so that we can keep your account and information safe.

Before you start the account recovery waiting period, try to reset your password. Learn how to reset your Apple ID password on a trusted device or through the Apple Support app on a family member’s iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You can also visit an Apple Store and ask to use a device on site. If you set up an account recovery contact, they can also help you reset your password.

Use account recovery only as a last resort when you can’t sign in or reset your Apple ID password.

After you start account recovery

After you request account recovery, you get an email with a confirmation of your request and the date and time of when you can expect to regain access.

  • If you submitted your account recovery request with iforgot.apple.com through your device’s browser, you should avoid using that device during this period. Using that device might cancel account recovery.
  • To avoid delays, turn off other devices that are signed in with your Apple ID until account recovery is complete.

When the wait period is over, Apple sends you a text or automated phone call with instructions to regain access to your account. Follow the instructions to immediately regain access to your Apple ID.

In some cases, you might be able to speed up the account recovery process or reset your password immediately by verifying a six-digit code sent to your primary email address. You might also be able to shorten the wait time by providing credit-card details to confirm your identity. If you’re given this option, an authorization request goes to the card issuer.*

Check the status of your request

At any time, you can see how long it will be until your account is ready for recovery, or when more information will be available. Just go to iforgot.apple.com and enter your Apple ID.

Cancel your request

  • If you remember your information and can sign in successfully, your wait period cancels automatically and you can use your Apple ID immediately.
  • To cancel a recovery request that you did not make, follow the instructions in your email confirmation.

* Apple Pay doesn’t work as a credit card. If you enter your credit-card details correctly, and are asked to reenter your security information, contact your card issuer. The issuer might have declined your authorization attempts.

Question: Q: What is Update Requested on iPhone

My iPhone is stuck on an update request and even after I turn it off and back on again it’s the same thing

It may help to follow the steps here:

If you are unable to update wirelessly, consider instead updating via iTunes (and vice versa):

Whichever method you choose, be sure to first make a backup of your iPhone (you may wish to choose the option to Encrypt iPhone backup if using iTunes):

Note that Apple advises that you should not force restart your iPhone unless it is unresponsive and cannot be restarted normally.

Also note that, for iTunes to be able to connect with a device running iOS 10 or newer (including updating it), your computer must be running iTunes version 12.5.1 or newer:

If you are having this problem with the ios 11 update, tried everything and did not solve it, try PLUGGING IN THE POWER! Sounds idiot but it will probably work!

Perhaps, disconnecting and then reconnecting to WiFi will jar the update and allow it to begin. Try putting the phone in Airplane Mode, restart again, wait a minute or so, then tune Airplane Mode off.

Settings>Airplane Mode>On. Restart the phone. Wait a minute, then go to Settings>Airplane Mode>Off.

If that doesn’t work, force restart the phone and see if the update starts. On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo. On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

If that doesn’t work, see if the update downloaded and if so, delete it and start over again. Settings>General>Storage & iCloud Usage>Storage>Manage Storage. Let the list of apps load. Find the Software update. Tap on it and delete it in the next screen. Go back to Settings>General>Software Update and try downloading it again.

Before you can download anything from the App Store, you must create an account first.

Mar 26, 2015 12:35 PM

I have created an account and it still gave me same message. i am equally logged in as i am addressing this case.

You need more than just an Apple ID to use the App Store. You must have a payment method attached to your account. If you have NEVER downloaded anything from the App Store in the past, WITH THIS PARTICULAR Apple ID, you will need to add a payment method first before it will allow you to download.

Please launch iTunes and sign in to the iTunes Store. Then try again to sign in to the Mac App Store.

Hello pmiles and Linc,

Thanks for your support; i used a friends ID and it worked.

However, currently am having over 50hrs to download and install and my internet is fine. How do i reinstall this OS alternatively.

Mar 27, 2015 3:12 AM

Yosemite is only available through the App Store. I suggest not using wireless for the download and go with a wired ethernet connection.

And BTW, by using someone else’s Apple ID to download the software, you are attaching that software to his Apple ID. Meaning it will show in his previous downloads and not yours should you need to download it again. You really should resolve your Apple ID issue and download it under your own Apple ID.

Hello pmiles and Linc,

So you purchased Yosemite using his AppleID?

Try resetting the App Store and Clearing Cookies.

I have a new, valid apple id. I have logged in to manage my AppleID and I added payment info to it. I am STILL getting the ridiculous message: «This AppleID has not yet been used with the App store.»

If one must first make some bogus purchase at the App Store to use recovery that really *****! If that is so THEN SAY SO.

I am trying to recover my OSX as my disk drive crashed. Using recovery mode all works fine EXCEPT this stupid error. It’s also not easy to find info that addresses this problem / roadblock specifically. The info on this page does, however none of the solutions offered resolve the problem. Who says Apple is more user friendly than other platforms?

NOT IN THIS CASE.

Nov 22, 2016 7:51 AM

Why are you not using the ID you presumably used to register/purchase the version of macOS you had installed? You can’t «recover» an OS that the account you’re using doesn’t ‘own’.

Nov 22, 2016 7:54 AM

You are making the assumption I purchased the OS. I did not. It was installed at SimplyMac, a registered Apple service center. Unfortunately they ignored / forgot my request to install a case SENSITIVE file system when they wiped the old Snow Leopard to install El Capitan. I am a developer, and I require a case sensitive file system.

Your question is a non-sequitur. The AppleID is new, valid, tied only to that one device. I have added a credit card to it. This is either a BUG or a case of non-disclosed requirements to use recovery mode. Either way it’s a real PITA to get past or search for info about. Terrible support on this issue.

Nov 22, 2016 8:11 AM

Use the ID you originally used to purchase/register the OS. If you weren’t the one who did that and your ID was not used to do so, then take it back to SimplyMac. They did it wrong. You can not «recover» something that you don’t own.

Nov 22, 2016 8:27 AM

I am done with SimplyMac. They are either incompetent or overloaded with demand. Either way they refuse to accept responsibility for the mistakes they made, which incidentally I can easily prove. I have not altered the disk that SimplyMac installed El Capitan on with the incorrect filesystem case sensitivity except to create an account.

I have discovered the issue causing «This Apple ID has not yet been used in the App store.». This is simply a case of undisclosed info and requirements. Apple has done a very poor job on documenting the requirements for using recovery mode.

For the multitude of others suffering from this problem I’ll review what is required.

1) You must have or create an AppleID and tie a payment method to it using a credit card for example. That is what I did, but that’s not enough. There may be other payment options that will also work. There are several ways to create the AppleID if you don’t have one. I had no difficulty in finding info on how to do this.

2) There may be other methods, but what worked for me was to boot OSX normally and open iTunes. Sign in with your AppleID. You may get a similar error, «This Apple ID has not yet been used with iTunes.» Now however the «Review» button will work, unlike in recovery mode. If you get this message click the Review button and make sure everything is correct. Once you do you will see the «You may now use this AppleID to make purchases from iTunes or the Apple App Store.» or something like that. In my case the 3 digit security code was not correct, and I didn’t have a Mr. | Mrs. etc «title». Those issues SHOULD have been caught by the «Manage your AppleID» website but guess what, IT DOESN’T.

3) Now that the iTunes store has blessed your AppleID you can now restart the system in recovery mode by holding the Option key + R. When you’re prompted for your AppleID you will not see the «Haven’t used» message.

Now however, I hit a new roadblock: «The item you requested is temporarily unavailable.» I suspect this too is a BOGUS error message, and the message should instead be: «The version of OSX you requested is no longer available. Would you like to upgrade to the latest version?» I am speculating here (Apple forces us to do that alot), as an older OS may be available for download but «temporarily unavailable» due to overloaded servers that can’t keep up with demand.

I will also warn you that once you get this message and cancel that dialog, any further attempt at clicking the «Install» button will briefly show a progress popup saying «Signing into the App Store», but then NOTHING — no error message or clue to the user as to what is going on. Not even a repeat of the «temporarily unavailable» message. This too is a BUG, or in the very least poor design.

I have another external drive I have installed Sierra on, so I will attempt to recover a Sierra OSX and see if I get the same message or if the «temporarily unavailable» message continues to be the response. If that is the case I will wait until late tonight to try this again, going back to El Capitan.

I hope this detailed info will help others. I’m not holding my breath for Apple to fix their docs or bugs on this issue.

The process of recovering the OS should NOT be this difficult, nor should info on how to do it correctly be so hard to locate .

This application has requested the runtime: как исправить ошибку

Узнаем, что означает ошибка this application has requested the runtime и как предотвратить ее появление…

Сообщение this application has requested the runtime означает, что программе требуется больше времени на выполнение задачи

Как удалить ПО или компонент с ошибкой this application has requested the runtime:

  • В Панели управления (значок «Windows» в нижнем левом углу экрана) необходимо зайти в раздел «Программы»;
  • В списке необходимо выбрать нужный компонент или программу и выбрать пункт «Удалить» на панели окна;

This application has requested the runtime

This application has requested the runtime
