All File Explorers return android/data folders are empty

I am using S20 Ultra with the latest original Samsung Android 11 as well as the file explorers: My Files (samsung), Total Commander, MiX and CX explorer.
To this day I have always had access to files in android/data from the SD card and / or internal memory.
Today the android/data folders in the SDcard and internal memory are showing that they are empty although I’m sure they should be there. I think that the latest android 11 version installed had to hide these system files, and I can’t find the option to make these folders and files visible.
Could you tell me how to RE-display all my folders/files?
Thanks for your help

Unfortunately it’s because of Android 11. Don’t know why Google did that. U can only access the files using the built in default Google file manager. U can use Nova launcher shortcuts to access it or use this app which is a shortcut to it https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.marc.files
It’s a real pain to move files etc using it, but there’s currently no alternatives

Hi I use Solid explorer payed version and it opens android/data folder. It is android who blocked access to the data folder for privacy reasons. But with Solid explorer i can access it. I’m also using S20 Ultra with latest one ui 3.1 update.
You can move files from and to the data folder via this app.

Hi all and TNX for yr experience sharing,
Since February this year, Samsung offer a system update. So, since February I’ve Android 11. I discover that Android 11 android/data folder access denied.
Here is some information gleaned from the web and my sahring experience.
Managing files in the «Android/data» folder on Android 11 as well as the latest version of TotalCommander, MiX Explorer and CX Explorer have access to Internal Memory android/data/ folder but NOT to SD-Card android/data/ folder.
In addition, I have access to Internal memory/android/data folders through computer connexion. But still, the access to SD card/android/data folders is denied.
Also, I’ve installed TomTom Navigator GPS on Android 10 and the maps (>6GB) in the SD-card. I updated the maps several time without problem. Since February this year, after system update to android 11, due to the denial of access to SD-CARD android/data, TomTom can no longer update the maps.
On the other hand, my wife who has an A51 (android 10) and uses the same applications as me with the same application configuration can update TomTom maps , while I CANNOT.

Android 11 has blocked permission to the data folder. It’s normal. It came with the new permission functions and «Scoped Storage» concept (third party apps can only access their own app specific files/folders).
However, you can use a third party file manager app (ex: Files app) if you want to access/copy files from the data folder. But still you can’t copy files to the data folder.

Google Pixel And Windows 10: This Folder Is Empty. How To See Internal Storage
In this article we will tell you about several methods to connect Google Pixel to PC or laptop, view the content such as files, folders, pictures, music and videos from Windows 10. You will be able to download and upload files to/from your phone.
The question asked by a user: How to connect Google Pixel to my computer under Windows 10 and view files and folders on the internal storage? The issue is when I plug in my Pixel to a desktop PC using USB I see an empty storage in the explorer: absolutely nothing is visible there and I can only see “This folder is empty”.
Option 1. Switch Your Pixel To “File Transfer” Mode To See The Internal Storage
- Connect your Google Pixel to Windows 10 PC using the USB cable:
Option 2. Switch From MTP To PTP In Developer Options
To switch your Google Pixel (Pixel XL) from MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) to PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol).
- Enable “Developer Options” by tapping on “Build Number” in “Phone Status” for several times.
- Go to “Settings” > “Developer Options”:
- Scroll down to “Networking”.
- Tap on “Select USB Configurations”:
- Select “PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol)”:
- Connect your Google Pixel to PC. You will be able to browse pictures:
Unfortunately you will have to do this every time after you reboot your Google Pixel. Actually, I don’t understand why use this method if you can use the previous one.
Option 3. Use MyPhoneExplorer App To Access Storage, Sync And Backup Data
With this third-party program you can manage your Google Pixel content: transfer files, sync contacts and messages and much more.
Download MyPhoneExplorer from the official website and install onto your Windows PC.
Now you can connect your Pixel over the Wi-Fi or USB and access all phone’s content. Finally select “Internal Storage” from “Files” menu:

Non-empty folder shows as empty in app #230
Comments
keithzg commented Aug 30, 2016
Actual behaviour
Folder that isn’t actually empty is shown as empty, and any help understanding or debugging why would be appreciated . . .
Expected behaviour
Contents of the folder should be shown!
Steps to reproduce
- Happen to have a folder that’s cursed like one of mine is (I haven’t been able to find any special attribute of this folder to verify why this one is different)
- Go to the folder in the Android app.
- See «Nothing in here. Upload something!» instead of the folder contents.
Environment data
Android version: 6.0.1
Device model: Nexus 6P (also tested on a Pixel C running Android 7.0 and an old Moto X 2013 running Android 4.4)
Stock or customized system: Stock.
Nextcloud app version: 1.2.0
Nextcloud server version: 10.0.0
Nextcloud server OS: *buntu 16.04
Web server error log
Nothing written to /var/log/apache2/error.log, although when looking at the access.log I see PROPFINDs like a normal folder but never any GET like is caused by browsing to other folders.
Nextcloud log (data/nextcloud.log)
Nothing is written to this when I browse to the folder in the Android app, or when I pull down to prompt a refresh (in fact the only thing writing seems to be logs recording the invocation of cron.php by my system cron job for the sake of the News app).
The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:
AndyScherzinger commented Aug 30, 2016
Hi @keithzg
if the folder on the server isn’t empty and you don’t see any errors in the server logs that would link to this error, could you install the Nextcloud Android app beta version from f-droid (https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=com.nextcloud&fdid=com.nextcloud.android.beta) and check the log (to be found on the settings screen in the app?
That way we might gain some inside what the android client is doing.
keithzg commented Aug 31, 2016
Unfortunately, I may have run into a different bug, unless there’s something else I have to do to enable logging in the beta app?
AndyScherzinger commented Aug 31, 2016
0_o now it gets really weird. There should be something in it, basically always since the beta logs a lot of stuff to support finding bugs.
Is the log empty on both devices?
keithzg commented Sep 1, 2016
The Pixel C running 7.0 has nothing in the Logs section either. Are you sure there’s no additional step I would have to take to enable it? (I guess we’re getting a bit off track here, heh, but it’s certainly hard to debug issues without logs.)
AndyScherzinger commented Sep 1, 2016
There is no additional step required, to my knowledge. The log is aleays active for the beta. Maybe @tobiasKaminsky can shed some light in this after he is back — next week.
keithzg commented Sep 12, 2016
Any news? This isn’t the worst problem in the word—I can always just access the folder via WebDAV, and that works fine from my Android devices—but both the lack of any file and folder listing for this folder, and the lack of any logging, seem bizarre and I’d love to get to the bottom of them.
AndyScherzinger commented Sep 13, 2016 •
@keithzg no progress yet. @tobiasKaminsky is back from vacation and we are preparing for the conference starting end of this week. Is the folder containing any rather private information while of course the files are private per se. So you could create an a separate account shared with us to debug this matter? Seeing no logs at all on both devices seems really weird since at least on the Nexus6P your are most likely not the only user with this device.
Is the folder any kind of special storage like external drive, dropbox integration, etc.? Is anything happening when you pull-down-to-refresh?
Other than that @tobiasKaminsky I think we should implement discuss and schedule #247. Even though if the beta app doesn’t show any logs it seems rather related to the device (not the device model since there are no other reports of Nexus6P users and it is working on my Nexus5X).
As a general note, we would also like to get to the bottom of this since the lack of files/folders is strange and this should «simply work».
milgner commented Sep 13, 2016
I was experiencing this issue myself with my /Music folder. Now I notice that it has disappeared, there are two things that I changed: I updated my Nextcloud server to the latest version and changed the rewrite rules for stripping trailing slashes a bit. Of course the Android app may also have been updated in the meantime but I’m not sure about that.
AndyScherzinger commented Sep 13, 2016
@milgner you can check the Android App version in the settings screen at the bottom 🙂 1.3.0 RCx or 1.2.0 propably.
tobiasKaminsky commented Sep 13, 2016
I do not have a clue at the moment why the logs are not shown.
keithzg commented Sep 14, 2016 •
I’ve updated my beta app to version 20160907, and unfortunately there’s no change to either the folder being empty, nor to the log screen being empty.
Is the folder containing any rather private information
Unfortunately, the folder in question is perhaps the single most private folder I have on my Nextcloud instance—it’s my personal notes folder! Not all are terribly private, but many are, alas. Edit: hmm, do you mean to imply though that it’s possible for me to share this folder without allowing access to the contents of the files within it?
Is the folder any kind of special storage like external drive, dropbox integration, etc.?
Nope, it’s all on the same single drive that the entire server runs from, and is no different than any of my other folders in that regard.
Is anything happening when you pull-down-to-refresh?
It briefly goes to «Loading. » but after a second or two the motion dots at the top cease again and the text in the middle changes back to «Nothing in here. Upload something!»
AndyScherzinger commented Sep 14, 2016 •
@keithzg at the moment I do not really have an idea because the log should have plenty of log statements in it and if it is empty than that is rather really strange 🙁 As for the folder sharing, no I don’t think sharing the folder but not its content is possible or even if though would then reproduce the error on my device/emulator.
@tobiasKaminsky any idea what to do? the only thing that comes to my mind is that an error happens during this fetching of the folder/file list which brings you back to «Nothing in here. Upload something!». So for the beta we could add a toast or something which then at least displays an error (if one occurs) and probably do something similar for the log screen. Any other ideas?
alnixon commented Sep 19, 2016
@keithzg Just to rule this out . in the menu, ensure you have «All files» selected and not «On device».
keithzg commented Sep 19, 2016
@alnixon Oh indeed, it’s «All files» that I’m under. Lots of files and folders I can see that aren’t on the device itself, just not the contents of that one particular folder.
AndyScherzinger commented Sep 19, 2016
@keithzg is the log in the Android beta app from f-droid empty on all your devices?
keithzg commented Jan 28, 2017
@AndyScherzinger This was true as of September, but I finally got around to re-checking this today, and at some point in the intervening days this has changed! I finally have an actual error message to report:
(Some line breaks added for readability.)
AndyScherzinger commented Feb 7, 2017
Hi @keithzg
is still issue still present for your device(s)?
keithzg commented Apr 7, 2017 •
@AndyScherzinger sadly it still is. Currently running version 1.4.2 of the Android app, version 11.0.2 of Nextcloud itself. I also recently got a Samsung Chromebook Plus, and the issue appears there as well (when using the Android app).
Adi3000 commented Apr 17, 2017
Hello, for information I encounter the same issue. My wife seems to make it work perfectly (Sony Xperia Z3 Compact D5803 with Android 6.0.1) but me (with Sony Xperia Z3 «normal» (D6603) on Android 6.0.1) cannot see my owncloud home.
Beside, I can upload thing, and those things can be seen next to my other thing :
- My empty view
1b) My web full view - After upload
2b) My proper after upload view
