Get a verification code and sign in with two-factor authentication
With two-factor authentication, you’ll need a verification code to sign in with your Apple ID on a new device or browser.
Whenever you sign in with your Apple ID on a new device or browser, you’ll confirm your identity with your password plus a six-digit verification code. There are a few ways you can get a verification code. You can use the code displayed on your trusted device, get a text or phone call, or generate a code from your trusted device.
If you use iOS 11.3 or later on your iPhone, you might not need to enter a verification code. In some cases, your trusted phone number can be automatically verified in the background on your iPhone. It’s one less thing to do, and your account is still protected with two-factor authentication.
Use the code displayed on your trusted device
If you have a trusted device running iOS 9 and later, OS X El Capitan and later, iPadOS 13 and later, or watchOS 6 and later, the verification code is displayed automatically on your trusted devices.
- Sign in with your Apple ID and password on a new device or browser.
- Look for a sign in notification on any of your trusted devices.
- Tap Allow to receive your verification code.
- Enter the verification code on your other device to complete sign in.

It includes the email address and password you use to sign in as well as the contact, payment, and security details you use across Apple services. Apple takes the privacy of your personal information very seriously and employs industry-standard practices to safeguard your Apple ID.
Here are some of the best practices you can follow to maximize the security of your account.
Use a strong password for your Apple ID
Apple policy requires you use strong passwords with your Apple ID. Your password must have eight or more characters and include upper and lowercase letters, and at least one number. You can also add extra characters and punctuation marks to make your password even stronger. Apple also uses other password rules to make sure your password isn’t easy to guess.
If you aren’t sure if you have a strong password, visit your Apple ID account page to reset your password as soon as possible.
Make the answers to your security questions hard to guess
Apple uses security questions to provide you with a secondary method to identify yourself online or when contacting Apple Support. Security questions are designed to be memorable to you but hard for anyone else to guess. When used in conjunction with other identifying information, they help Apple verify that you are the person who is requesting access to your account. If you haven’t selected your security questions, visit your Apple ID account page to set them up.
Protect your account with two-factor authentication
Apple offers an improved security method called two-factor authentication that’s designed to ensure that you’re the only person who can access your account, even if someone else knows your password. When you enter your Apple ID and password for the first time on a new device, we’ll ask you to verify your identity with a six-digit verification code. This code is displayed automatically on your other devices, or sent to a phone number you trust. Just enter the code to sign in and access your account on the new device. Never share your password or verification code with anyone else.
If you use iOS 11.3 or later on your iPhone, you might not need to enter a verification code. In some cases, your trusted phone number can be automatically verified in the background on your iPhone. It’s one less thing to do, and your account is still protected with two-factor authentication.
Two-factor authentication is built directly into iOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and Apple’s websites. You can use two-factor authentication with your Apple ID if you have a device that’s using the latest iOS or macOS, or if you have access to a web browser and a phone number. Two-factor authentication is the default security method for some new Apple IDs created on iOS 10.3 or later and macOS 10.12.4 or later.
If you don’t have devices that can be updated to iOS 9 or later, or OS X El Capitan or later, you can set up two-step verification for your Apple ID instead.

Check for encryption and SSL
All web pages where you can view or change your Apple ID use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to protect your privacy. In Safari, look for in your browser when accessing your account at your Apple ID account page to know your session is fully encrypted and secure.
Employee privacy and security policies
In addition to strong passwords, encryption, and other technology, Apple has strict policies and procedures in place to prevent unauthorized access to your account. Without proof of your identity via a temporary Support PIN and other carefully selected criteria, Apple Support can’t help you perform any actions on your account. These policies are audited and reviewed on a regular basis.
Other tips for keeping your account secure
Good online security requires a combination of practices by companies using Internet services and informed behavior by users. Below are some tips to follow to maximize your security when using your Apple ID and other online accounts.
- Always use a strong password.
- Never use your Apple ID password with other online accounts.
- Change your password regularly and avoid reusing old passwords.
- Choose security questions and answers that can’t be easily guessed. Your answers can even be nonsense as long as you can remember them. For example, Question: What is your favorite color? Answer: Mozart.
- If you abandon an email address or phone number associated with your Apple ID, be sure to update your Apple ID with current information as soon as possible.
- Set up two-factor authentication for your Apple ID to add an extra layer of security to your account and eliminate the need for security questions.
- Avoid phishing scams. Don’t click links in suspicious email or text messages and never provide personal information on any website you aren’t certain is legitimate. Learn how to identify phishing attempts.
- Don’t share your Apple ID with other people, even family members.
- When using a public computer, always sign out when your session is complete to prevent other people from accessing your account.
Never provide your password, security questions, verification codes, recovery key, or any other account security details to anyone else. Apple will never ask you for this information.
If Apple Support needs to verify your identity, we might ask you to generate a temporary Support PIN. We’ll only ask for this information over the phone after you contact Apple Support for help.

How to verify your identity for Apple Card
If you are asked to scan your valid Driver License or State ID when you apply for Apple Card, 1 follow these steps:
- Scan the front of your Photo ID and tap Continue
- Scan the back of your Photo ID and tap Continue
To rescan your Photo ID, tap Scan Again.

- Apple Watch: Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap your Apple Cash card.
- Tap Verify Identity.
- Follow the onscreen steps. When capturing your Driver License or state ID card, use these tips:
- Place your card on a dark background.
- Capture all four corners of your card.
- Make sure that there’s nothing between your device’s camera and the card that would obscure it.
The first time that you verify your identity, you might be asked for this information:
- Your full name
- Your social security number
- Your date of birth
- Your home address 3
- Answers to questions regarding your personal history
- An image of your valid Driver License or state ID card
To use all the features of Apple Cash 2 and send and receive money with Apple Pay, you must verify your identity.
When you’ll be asked to verify your identity
You’ll be asked to verify your identity based on how much you use Apple Cash. You may not add or receive $500 or more in total without verifying your identity. You might also be asked to verify your identity prior to this limit.
To protect your account and the security of your money, you might be asked to verify your identity when using Apple Cash, even if you have previously done so.
For Apple Cash Family
If the family organizer hasn’t already, they need to verify their identity when they set up Apple Cash Family.
Members of the Family Sharing group that are over 18 years old and take ownership of their Apple Cash account, must verify their identity.
If you’re under 18 years old, your family organizer can set up Apple Cash for you.
Why you’ll be asked for your personal data
Person to person payments and the Apple Cash card are services provided by Green Dot Bank, member FDIC, a regulated financial institution. Green Dot Bank is required by federal law to verify the identity of its customers.
To verify your identity, Green Dot Bank will request social security numbers and other personal information to ensure that customers are eligible to use the service.
Where is your personal information going
Information that you provide will be sent to Green Dot Bank and their identity verification service provider. Your name and address is securely stored by the partner bank and Apple Payments Inc. If asked, social security number, date of birth, answers to questions (e.g. confirm street name you have previously lived on), or a copy of your government ID will be provided to Green Dot Bank and their identity service provider, and stored by Green Dot Bank as long as required by law. This additional information cannot be read by Apple.
Apple created Apple Payments Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary, to protect your privacy by storing and processing information separately from the rest of Apple and in a way that the rest of Apple doesn’t know.
What if you enter the wrong information
Try to verify your identity again. When you verify again, we might ask for your valid Driver License or state ID.
- Go to your card info:
- iPhone: Open the Wallet app, tap your Apple Cash card, then tap .
- iPad: Open the Settings app, tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap your Apple Cash card.
- Apple Watch: Open the Apple Watch app, tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap your Apple Cash card.
- Tap Verify Identity. If you don’t see this option, contact us. You might need to close your account and open a new one.
- Follow the onscreen steps.
What if you don’t have the information that you need to verify your identity
If your identity is unable to be verified, you won’t be able to use all the features of Apple Cash, including sending and receiving money and adding money to your Apple Cash balance.
You can use the money on your Apple Cash account to make purchases in stores, in apps, and on the web, and you can transfer money to your bank.

Identity Verification
In an effort to improve security for developers and customers, verification of your identity and/or your organization’s identity is required when you enroll in the Apple Developer Program, Apple Developer Enterprise Program, or iOS Developer University Program. It’s also required for various other processes, such as Account Holder transfer.
Individuals
Verification of your legal identity is currently required in order to enroll in Apple’s Developer programs. You’ll need to provide your legal name, phone number, and address. Do not enter an alias, nickname, or company name as your first or last name, as entering your legal name incorrectly will cause a delay in the enrollment process. P.O. boxes are not accepted. In some cases, you may be asked for your government identification number or an image of your photo ID. Additional or alternative documentation may be required.
Developers based in the United States and China mainland can enroll and/or verify their identity using the Apple Developer app on iPhone or iPad. Identity verification is required for:
- Account Holders based in the United States or China mainland.
- Account Holders of organizations based in China mainland.
- Developers based in the United States or China mainland who wish to accept the transfer of the Account Holder role.
To verify using a method other than the Apple Developer app, contact support.
Organizations
Our identity verification process for organizations enrolling in the Apple Developer Program includes several components, including but not limited to a D‑U‑N‑S Number and binding authority check. You’ll be asked for the D‑U‑N‑S Number associated with your legal entity and, if you’re not the owner/founder, you must provide a reference who can confirm that you have the legal authority to enroll the organization and to bind it to legal agreements.
The Apple Developer Enterprise Program and the iOS Developer University Program each require separate identity verification. To enroll, you’ll need to set up a new Apple ID that is not associated with an Apple Developer Program membership.
You may be asked for business documents that are notarized to certify that the copy you intend to provide to Apple is a true copy of your original document. Depending on your region, notarization may be done by a municipal office, solicitor, notary public, or other method.
